Poll: What does Memphis ACTUALLY do with the #2?

Post#1 » by Smills91 » Tue Jun 23, 2009 2:32 pm

Not what you WANT them to do, but rather predict accurately what they WILL do with the pick?

Draft:
Thabeet
Harden
Evans
Rubio
Other

or

Trade the pick away?

IMO the Grizz will ultimately trade the pick. I also don't believe the trading partner will be Sacramento. The Grizz and Kings both need too much to be good trading partners. If what Chad Ford has mentioned is true and OKC made Thabeet a promise at 3, the Grizz are now really in the driver's seat. If a teams wants Rubio OR Thabeet, they must deal with the Grizz.

Link to Ford comment here.

The word around the league is that Hasheem Thabeet canceled his workout in Memphis on Sunday in part because he's confident that the Thunder will take him with the No. 3 pick in the draft. How confident is a subject of debate. A few sources say Thabeet got a promise from the Thunder over the weekend. However a source close to Thabeet says he doesn't have a promise and feels there's still a good chance that Memphis takes him at No. 2 -- despite Thabeet's objections.

Could the Grizz front office botch this? Sure. Are they likely to? I'm thinking there's about a 70% chance now that they get it right and trade the pick. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Thursday night (or whenever a deal is finalized) can't come soon enough! :D

Also note that the only folks likely selecting Thabeet are non Grizz fans. If you're picking Thabeet and are a Grizz fan, please reply and let it be known. Fine by me if that's your opinion, I'd just like to see if it's really Grizz fans that want him.

I think we're going to trade the pick, and I think we'll trade it to Minnesota - for either number 5 and 6 (assuming MN can acquire #5) or Love and 6 (with something else from Memphis going back to MN ... possibly Arthur?). I would be pleased with either one of these scenarios so long as we can nab Evans with a pick.

That's definitely a possibility, however, I personally think Memphis has reservations about going THAT far down. I think the ACTUAL three guys atop their board are:

Thabeet, Evans, and HArden in that order. I think it's very likely that all three could be gone by #6.

2) Rubio - Minny
3) Thabeet - OKC
4) Evans - Sacto
5) Harden - Washington

Leaving the Grizz stuck with Curry(doesn't want to play in Memphis - I know you hate hearing this, I don't blame you, but it's what's being reported), Holiday, Flynn, and Hill.

If you're okay with Hill, I can see Memphis doing this. But I don't think they're okay with that. I think they want Thabeet or Evans - which both will likely be gone by then.

And I don't see Minny packaging Love WITH #6 or acquiring #5 for Washinton. I think that's too rich for #2 in this draft.

I think it's something like #6/#18/cheaper prospect and/or contract dump for #2/#27/Jaric AT THE MOST.

There's no real bidding war for #2, so I think the offers will be disheartening for the Grizz, which is why I think they ultimately keep the pick and take their choice of Thabeet, Evans or Harden.

Why do I have such a bad feeling about what's going to happen Thursday night? Image

Just trade #2 for Kevin Love already. If the Grizzlies can talk Minnesota into getting #6 with Love, even better.

You are the most bitter fan I've encountered in a long, long time. We'll just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure, when the Grizz had the worst record and got shafted with the 4th pick, I sure as heck didn't hit up other teams boards and scold them on what to expect, what was going to happen and what their team HAD to do. Bottom line Smills, I have 0 respect for you or your opinions, no matter how valid they may or may not be. *shrug*

Well since Rubio nor Thabeet wants to play for us, our best bet is to try trade down or trade the 2nd pick.

I think we can get some value for the pick.

All I can say is that I disagree with you on the bolded part, and time will soon tell. I also think that if the Grizz move down, it will be to acquire a starting caliber PF and a backup combo guard.

Who's bidding up for #2?

If by bitter you mean keeping it real, sure, I'll take that.....I'm not bitter and I'm not trying to 'scold' you. I'm looking at the situation with what I think makes logical sense from the pieces I've gathered over the past days and weeks.

Minnesota is the only potential candidate. Sacramento has refused to. Washington won't part with McGee and is looking to move the pick for a vet. The Warriors - haven't heard anything out of their camp and what woudl they really offer to move up? I don't see Randolph going with #7 to move up. The Knicks don't have any pieces to move unless you think Wilson Chandler is worth moving down to #8( I don't think he is). After that? What do you got?

So you got Minnesota that's throwing a low-ball offer of #6 and change your way. I don't see anyone beating down the door with the assets that the Grizz would desire.

So I ask you again? Where is this bidding war for the #2 pick?

Answer: There isn't one.

If the Grizz want Thabeet or Evans(Which is who I think they're targeting)..then they're either going to have to just select one at 2 and be done with it, or accept a much lesser package with Sacramento(who can guarantee one of Thabeet or Evans - as I don't see either lasting past #4 if Rubio goes in the 2 spot).

Not trying to drag you down, or burst your bubble. I'm reading the situation and piecing things together.

If someone proves me wrong, Good for you guys. You then got a sweet deal. However, I really don't think that'll happen. And Thursday will show us that.

I know you all are holding out hope for Love, but Kahn just came out and said he's keeping Love and Al in tact. Therefore you're looking at their 2nd tiered assets with the #6 spot. I don't think any are worth it to the Grizzlies to move down and miss out on Evans or Thabeet.

sorry to bust your bubble - but Chris Wallace said today he had multiple people calling him during workouts interested in the #2 pick. that was just today in probably a 1 hour period.

it might not be a bidding war but I am sure everyone is checking their levels

Well I think Minnesota just got the ammunition to move up to #2. That's a great trade for you guys if you land both #5 and #6.

That will be the best move... it is almost guarantee that one of the lottery picks will turn out to be a stud and the other to be a decent player while Rubio might bolt out for a bigger market. Also if lucky both lottery picks can turn out to be great players and memphis will be set for the future.
Sasha Vujacic = The Phail Machine = The Ring Blocker

Trade Sasha before he ruins the Lakers next season.

I think Minny is gonna trade #5, 18, 28 Nicolas Pekovic and Craig Smith for the #2

Minny can't do that trade. They can only flip players from the Washington deal in one for one deals for 60 (IIRC) days.

Welp, so much for Randy Foye in a Memphis uni next season lol.

Gimme Love, 5 or 6 for 2 and I'm content.

Pekovic is the PF/C Euro that the Wolves drafted with the first pick of the second round last year.

I think Minny hears laughter and then a dial tone.
