Welcome Our Rookies

Post#1 » by SD2042 » Fri Jun 26, 2009 12:59 pm

The Grizzlies selected Hasheem Thabeet of UConn for their #2 pick in the draft.

#27 DeMarre Carroll of Mizzou

Sarcasm remark from ESPN's Stuart Scott on Carroll.

Stuart Scott on Memphis draft pick DeMarre Carroll: “Here’s a guy with liver disease.” (He went on to add he probably wouldn’t need a transplant for a couple decades. How reassuring.)

#36 Sam Young of Pitt

The majority of the Grizzfans would've prefer the Grizz to trade the #2pick of the draft, but Chris Wallace chose to go with Thabeet. I can only hope that Thabeet doesn't turn out to be a wasted pick pick along with being the next Shawn Bradley. So Wallace do this team a favor, hire a big man coach who can teach both ends of the floor from boxing out on defense, using your strengths to be a force in the post, and to especially help Thabeet become more efficient on offense.

Chris Wallace chose to go with Thabeet.

Not according to some sources, including Jeff Goodman. Thabeet was the choice of Heisley and Hollins.

This draft was a failure of epic proportions. Thabeet will be outed almost immediately when he can't adapt to the 3 second rule.

Sam Young was the ONLY redeeming factor of this draft.

Last night was the lowest point that I've hit as a Grizz fan. Worse that trading Pau for cap space that hasn't, to date, been used.

I talked about the Grizz needing to draft Sam Young with my dad on yesterday morning. I'm surprised to say that he fell this far and into the Grizz's lap. I think he will make a difference on both ends of the floor as a solid contributor. As for Thabeet, the Grizz and the fans are stuck with him know. I suggest to Wallace to go out and find a big man coach to help out Thabeet and the others on the frontcourt b/c Hollins guard mindset isn't going to cut it. He needs a big man coach in the worse way. If that happens and Thabeet gets better b/c of it. This draft may not be so bad after all.

Classy, Stu. You think if Carroll ever sits down for an interview with him he'll say "Here's a guy with a lazy eye!"

Guess I've got to support Hasheem Thabeet now. Not really big on DeMarre Carroll but whatever. Love the Sam Young pick though.

I liked that the Grizzlies addressed their depth and toughness issues with the picks.

I'm not sure what to make of the draft. The guy I wanted to see the Grizzlies select was Tyreke Evans and Hollins said after he was the other player they liked. It will be interesting to compare the two's careers as they grow in the league.

Where to begin? For starters I see another season just like this past one, with the exception that they will experiment even more with power forward. I think they'll really try and force Gasol to turn into a power forward. I wonder what Gasol is thinking today? He's probably happy he only has two more years on his contract until he is an unrestricted free agent. Talk about giving a guy incentive to sign elsewhere. It doesn't look good for the Grizzlies to have Gasol as a longterm player.

The part I don't get is that when people say the Grizzlies need defence I look at the stats and saw a team that was in the middle of the league in points allowed yet were almost dead last in offence with points scored. Thabeet, Carroll, and Young are known as tough defensive types, not scorers. And Quentin Richardson has been absolutely awful the last couple of seasons and is probably on par with Marko Jaric. So look for even more dominating the ball from Mayo and Gay.

But don't get me wrong. I like the picks of Carroll and Young. Both are hardnosed scrappy types, which is the kind of player I like. But where do they fit? Like a Warrick, they are combo players who probably best suit the small forward spot and are undersized at power forward. Rudy Gay is still going to get his 38 minutes a game, so both these players will be competing for 10 minutes between them unless they can somehow make one of them a shooting guard. Oh, that's right, they paid a premium to New York to get Richardson so I imagine they'll be playing him more. I wonder why they paid a $1.5mil premium for Richardson.

Conley,Mayo,Jaric,Richardson,Buckner,Gay,Young,Carroll,Arthur,Gasol,Thabeet,Haddadi, and possibly Warrick. There`s your 13 man roster. I`m sorry but it looks to me like Heisley is still holding the bottom line more valueable than winning. The team total salary is now down to around $45mil for next season. Was that his objective.

If they can't get a fluid athletic PF would help spread out the offense and be efficient on both ends of the ball, then this team will remain stuck. No way Marc Gasol will be able to play PF as he's just too slow to play against the quicker PFs like Amare, Josh Smith, or KG for instance. That's the main issue they have to address this summer in order to recover from the hell that is the NBA basement. More issues such as veteran leadership, hiring a big man coach to help our young frontcourt, and find a backup PG other than Jaric need to be address.

Great point about Gasol- you are spot on.

The only thing that could have been worse imo would be us trading one of our current players for Tyreke Evans. Bust waiting to happen imo.

As for you, GGF, you should have seen me watching this draft. It was pretty hilarious from an outsiders' perspective. Never been so angry at my pro team. I get way too into the draft- especially because I watch so much college ball.

Fact of the matter is that value is value. No way Carroll is worth a first round pick in any draft. Dejuan Blair is going to get a lot of offensive rebounds in the league, and that would create extra trips on offense. So, if we are such a poor offensive team, as evinced by the ranking provided, a great rebounder would be very valuable.

On Carroll, I believe you're right that he's more of the second round material considering his work ethic as a utility player. Although players like that are rare sometimes(see Bo Outlaw). Sometimes players like Carroll come in handy. I expect him to see time at SF and if the matchup is right, a tad of PF. As for Dejuan Blair, the Spurs went back to the past and got themselves another Malik Rose. Truth be told, I had them drafting Danny Green as they needed another SF. Hate that Green is a Cav b/c LBJ plays most of the minutes at the spot. Back to Blair, his rebounding prowess would've help out the Grizz alot as the Grizz were bad in that catagory last season.

honestly last night was the first and last time I ever will watch the draft live.

It was the lowest point of being a grizzlies fan for me - period. doing my best to move forward and forget about it. and I think I've been poisoned by the msg boards on Thabeet. WHO KNOWS - maybe he will be just what we needed. I just got to move on like the rest of us and reduce my expectations to less than nothing again.

I don't think so considering this draft wasn't a strong stock. If we selected Rubio, we would not see him play in the upcoming season since's he going back to Spain. Right now, like you the rest of us have to sit back and see what happens. Whatever it is needs to produce great results.

With the salary generated by the 2nd pick he wouldn't have had to go back to Spain. The difference between the 2nd and the 5th is nearly $4 for the life of the contract.
