Heisley making offer to AI

http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/jul/08/memphis-grizzlies-considering-1-year-5-million-off/Read it and weep, or celebrate - whichever side of the fence you're on. Apparently Heisley is going against everyone in the front office and offering AI a one year deal with an understanding that he will come off the bench and can be dismissed for any insubordination. Thoughts?

Very interesting on a number of fronts. The Randolph deal isn't done yet? I'm crossing my fingers he doesn't pass the physical. The Grizzlies are in the Mavs/Raptors deal? No bigggy there. Heisley is telling the people hired to put together the team what to do even when they don't want to do it? That is one heck of a bad thing. Memphis really is a house divided. No wonder fans can't figure out the vision of this organization. There is none.
As for Iverson. Why not? At $5mil he's a good buy. He's still one of the best at putting up points, and the Grizzlies need scoring from the backcourt. They were going to have to find a backcourt player or two anyways. Since Iverson plays both guard positions it kills two birds with one stone. At $5mil I bet Heisley is also looking at how many seats Iverson can fill.
As for Iverson's reputation and Heisley wanting to meet with him personally and treat him like a little kid and tell him he'll be gone if there's insubordination? That's funny, real funny. After all these years, teams, coaches, and achievements does anyone believe Heisley is going to have a profound change on Iverson?

As long as he a) keeps his attitude at least neutral b) agrees to get his 30+ minutes a night, but not starting and c) is somewhat productive - sign him up.

Man no offense...I don't know what the heck you guys are doing with this team. Your front office is making some pretty bad moves IMO.

If our front office was in charge, David Lee would already be a Grizz...

Maybe I'm reading to much into that article but how does Heisley plan to approach Iverson and almost threaten him as if he is a child? Hopefully for both parties' sake Iverson rejects the offer.

pretty much...
that is basically telling your employee that he is no chance to advance in the company and one mistake and your out of a job...
I'm sure AI will probably flip him the bird and tell him to GTFO.... Heisley really needs to learn how to deal with people... especially athletes with big ego's...
AI made 30 million last year alone... 5 million isn't enough money to be treated like that.
Please AI, retire. Nothing left to prove... especially on a Grizz team. Detriot was enough humiliation.

+1
$5 Million for 1 one year is fair considering the circumstances Iverson is under but for 1 year and $5 mill and to come off the bench, Iverson should just go to a contender. Why come off the bench for a lottery team when you can do it for a contender?

Iverson - Mayo - Gay - Randolph
WOW.
Can someone explain to me whether the coach is going to be allowed to "run" an "offense"?

If Heisley expects to box AI into a 1 yr deal worth 5mil with the guarantee that he will come off the bench and not disrupt the locker room. Good luck. AI will want more than 5 mil to please his pockets.

No- your coach will only be allowed to "watch" the offense.
Thankfully the Knicks have shown no interest in him.
Good luck. Glad you may get him- spares NYC the potential pain.

He is not the kind of player at this point who would actually feel pain if he was losing on a team like the Knicks, as long as he got his minutes and scored his points.

I'm not a Grizz fan.
I just wanted to say that after Allen Iverson was taken out of the starting rotation in
Detroit, and he sat out the rest of the season with his phantom injury,
that any offer you make to Iverson should be completely unguaranteed.
That way, if he doesn't like coming off the bench behind Mike Conley, Jr. and
OJ Mayo, you can just dismiss the SOB.

First they make room for Mike, show their commitment to him by drafting a center in a PG-friendly draft and now they want Iverson? Bad news for Mike/OJ, as I'm sure that AI will find a way to become a 82-game 35+ min starter.
