The Grizzlies are discussing a possible contract extension with Rudy Gay, but they remain far apart on an agreement.

Memphis has until Oct. 31 to extend Gay's contract. If they don't, the forward will become a restricted free agent next summer.

"We've had our discussions. We'll have more with two weeks left to see if there is any common ground," general manager Chris Wallace told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I don't want to put any measurement on it. We've had periodic discussions through the summer. But you either have a deal or you don't.

I have no doubt that the organization likes Rudy a lot but I am so glad they are not just willing to throw max money at him when the most important developement he needs to make is his mentality.

How much is he worth if he nevers makes that jump?

This is actually a smart basketball move so obviously the owner is not involved. Unless he gave Wallace a line that he can not cross and Rudy's camp has breached it already which would explain the inactivity.

That sounds about right. From the article, it doesn't sound like Rudy is taking it the wrong way by any means. Otherwise, neither side would not have talked much about the extension in and out the offseason. And the Grizz do retain the right to retain Rudy if a team were to go after his rights next summer.

Not sure if this is the appropriate place, but I know there are many people within the wolves that are fans of Gay. (*I am not) Would Memphis entertain a s/t? What kind of value would need to come back? If Memphis is going to lose him anyway you might as well get some small value in return.

Historically teams overestimate the value they will receive in a s/t. But I am curious if this is an option.

Given the way free agency played out this offseason, I think the smartest move for the organization is to let Rudy test the waters next summer as an RFA. My impression is that Rudy thinks he's worth significantly more than the Grizz or any other organization in the league thinks.

Hey guys, I have a question on this situation. First off as fans I know that you have most accurate estimation on Gay's real worth--so what do you guys believe to be Gay's current worth?

Also what figure do you think would be enough to lure him away in FA?

I'm thinking his current worth is something like 5years/50mill. and 5year/65mill. would be enough for the Grizzlies not to match?Am I correct?

Also I'd strongly advise to try to get that exentsion done because there are a lot of teams with capspace next summer shooting for the bigtime FAs BUT most of them are going to come up empty so there is a huge chance they'd take a chance on a 23 year old nice player like Gay.

He could probably get 5/50 in free agency, but he honestly has not earned that.

Memphis needs Rudy Gay as their starting small forward. Even with Carroll and Young looking like good picks, they can't step in and be regular NBA starters.

In hindsight they could have drafted Tyreke Evans like a number of fans suggested, traded Gay in a package along with a first round pick to the Bulls for Tyrus Thomas and Luol Deng to give Chicago cap space for 2010, and be done with it. No need for Iverson or Randolph.

I can understand how fans jump to conclusions when they read stories, but just because the two sides can't agree on an extention before the end of the month means nothing. Next summer, after all the big names have been signed there isn't going to be alot of money left to give Gay the same kind of contract. I think like David Lee he is going to find that there just isn't the deal that he wants.

This past summer should have been a lesson in things to come. There were alot of really good free agents and hardly any of them scored a big payday. And the fact Memphis can match any offer gives them more leverage.

This isn't that big of a story in my opinion.

The difference is, teams have been waiting for that summer to spend their money. When they strike out they will go for the restricted free agents like Aldridge and Gay. Sure it didn't work out for Lee, but there was only 1 team that could really offer him anything after the initial surge of free agent signings, and by the way Paul Milsap DID get a contract this way, so it certainly can happen.

I'm with 360....Rudy has not earned 5/50. I really don't, however, think that right now he'd garner that on the open market. I think that if you're outside "the group" of 2010 guys, you'll likely get hammered contract-wise trying to get something done next summer....unless some moron GM misses out on the major targets and has to overpay to satisfy a star/owner/etc....

...Rudy could very well play himself into deserving and getting 5/50 this season, however. We shall see.

IMO - after listening to Wallace over the past few weeks - the Grizz and Rudy have decided to let this season set his salary, for all practical purposes. Rudy is favored by Michael Heisley. He's not, IMO, going to let him walk. As others have already pointed out, Lee, Robinson and Sessions "success" in free agency have also served notice that the money isn't flowing like honey these days...

Jazz fan here. With their recent slew of injuries they literally have no shooters other Deron and Memo. Is Gay a good shooter? Would Memphis entertain any trade offers? What would Memphis be looking for in return? Obviously Boozer is out since you already have Randolph. The Jazz have expiring contracts in Ronnie Brewer and Matt Harpring. The Jazz also have New York's draft pick this year (unprotected, thanks to the brilliance if Isiah).

What brilliance? The trade was made in 2004 and six years later the pick is unprotected. So What? Most trades have picks that become unprotected in due time. Doesn't the Jazz owe Philly a pick that will eventually lose its protection?

I basically have Rudy for 5/48.8 but with the economy still falling it could be another 5pct of that so he is 5/50 or 5/45

Actually MN owns that pick, if the pick remains protected until 2014 Mn gets a second and crazy cash.

Receives Utah's 2010 first-round pick (top-17 protected in 2010, top-15 in 2011, top-16 in 2012, and top-16 in 2013) via Philadelphia from the Rodney Carney trade on 7/09/08.

Receives Charlotte's 2010 first-round pick (top-12 protected in 2010, top-10 protected in 2011, top-8 protected in 2012, top-3 protected in 2013, no protection in 2014) via Ty Lawson trade 6/25/09.

btw, seems to be a solid understanding that MN will either trade and trade for Gay in dec or overpay him this summer. 5/50 looks like the offer I am hearing the most.

You make it sound as if it is a done deal that Minnesota will have Rudy Gay by next year. It may be set in stone that they will attempt to trade for or sign Gay, but they will have to offer up a valuable asset (Rubio?) or severely overpay for him (5/50 will easily be matched by Heisley; he is infatuated with Gay).

Did you really suggest Rubio's rights in exchange for Gay?

If 5/50 is all that Rudy wants, then they need to go ahead and reach a deal by Monday night. At the moment, I don't think Rudy is worth that myself - but some team would definitely offer him that next summer IMO.
