I don't know what to make of Hollins remarks. It seems like he's passing the buck. Sure the players are the ones who make the plays, but a young team needs to have the structure to work under. Simply saying it's about effort doesn't cut it. One would assume the players are giving an effort.
Hollins reminds me of Sam Mitchell when he was coaching in Toronto. When the Raptors were struggling all he would say is they need to make more shots and play hard. That's it. I have to wonder if Memphis would do better with a more analytical coach that is better in designing systems tailored to his personnell.
Having freestyling types like Gay, Randolph, and Mayo to a lesser extent creates problems if you just leave it up to them make the team style work. When you look at successful teams that have the same kind of players, such as Denver and Boston, you also see Geaorge Karl and Doc Rivers, two coaches who have solid systems that the players buy into because they are successful.
I have to wonder if the Grizzlies had an x and o type of coach that drives the players hard on both ends of the court things might be different. I've liked Hollins going back to his days here in Vancouver. But I wonder if he is the right man for the job this season.
