Should Brewer Start?

Post#1 » by ThreeYearPlan » Fri Feb 19, 2010 5:13 am

If Memphis really wants to try the O.J. at pg experiment they finally have the pieces to do it:
Mayo
Brewer
Gay
Randolph
Gasol

At this point, no. I think out of the gate he'll best transition by being OJ and Rudy's primary back up and the #1 point of leadership off the bench. He'll have as many minutes (if not more) available to him than he's had this season with the Jazz. IMO the more interest question is whether or not the line up you proposed is the best to finish games with.

right. it's not like Caron Butler in Dallas. there he is coming in front of Jason Terry that already has been a 6th man for years. here we had the same starting 5 almost every single game. I doubt they shake that up any time soon. Hopefully we continue winning and don't need to either.

I agree. As the team is currently constructed it is most likely best that he does not start. If they had been able to upgrade the PG position with a player that can provide more scoring next to Brewer on the perimeter, then I would be all for it. But since we still have Mike Conley Jr as our starter, Mayo must continue to start with Brewer getting as many minutes as possible along with O.J. in the backcourt and backing up Rudy Gay. Erasing DeMarre Carroll's minutes.

Next season, however is a different story. Assuming we re-sign Rudy Gay, having Gay, Mayo and Brewer won't work long-term unless O.J. takes a major step in his PG abilities which I don't see happening.

That's one of the reasons why I believe the Monta Ellis for Mayo trade made some sense for Memphis (not so much for the Warriors though unless they just wanted to dump his contract..lateral move for them at best).

With Ellis starting at the 1, Brewer at the 2 and Rudy Gay at the 3 along with Zach and Marc, you'd have a pretty good starting 5. They'd lack in shooting though, but that could be bolstered with draft picks and small free agent signings.

Financially, it would only make sense for Memphis if you could move both O.J. and Conley's salary to fit Ellis'. What the two of them will make next season is close to what you would have to pay Monta. And with Brewer re-signed on a good deal for his ability, the Grizzlies financial picture would be pretty healthy for the next few years..assuming we could also re-sign Zach for less than he's currently making under the new CBA.

I do believe that's one reason why there was a rumor about Conley for cap relief during the deadline because I doubt if the Warriors would be willing to take him in a deal for Ellis. Probably trying to deal him to a third team for an expiring.

I like the idea and it makes me have more confidence in the organization going forward as there does seem to be a hint of a plan in mind. I hope they continue to pursue this path. Just because we didn't get Ellis now, doesn't mean we couldn't this summer or pull off a similar deal with another player (i.e. Devin Harris (with added compensation), Russell Westbrook, etc.).

I don't like the fact that if it were not for the Suns request that a team take Barbosa in the Amare deal (causing it to fall apart), that we probably would have ended up with Dorell Wright and cash instead of Brewer because I do believe that was the Grizzlies first option. After all they could have most likely signed Brewer in the offseason to a contract as the Jazz were most likely not going to match.

Brewer > Wright in a lot of ways. Especially in terms of helping us to win now. So we dodged a bullet on that one. Overall they have gained a lot of in terms of restoring some faith in this fan.

Look forward to the rest of the season.

Go Grizzlies!

Brewer better get as many (if not more) than Conley.
