So Minnesota comes to you and says....

We have plenty of cap space, and Gay wants to sign with us. We know you don't want to pay him 13 mil a year, and we know you want to get some value back for him. So let's talk shop. No, you can't have Kevin Love or Rubio in a sign and trade. But how about Ryan Gomes, Jonny Flynn, and Utah's pick (#23 or 24) for Gay (sign and trade) + your pick (#13).

Gomes is a solid combo forward that shoots the 3 and plays decent defense and rebounds. You might still start Brewer, but Gomes would look awfully nice coming off your bench. We like Flynn, but we have Rubio next year and Sessions (only 23) is a good enough stop gap for a year. And we might get Wall in the lottery, there's always that.

I know what you're thinking. Why are you giving us the better pick? Because Flynn would probably be the starter of the future for you guys and we could sign Gay to a 5 year, 13 mil a year deal without giving you anything and we all know you don't want to match that. So we have to get some value back for Flynn and Gomes outside of Gay.

So, what do you say? Gomes + Flynn for half the price of Gay + worse pick, or overpay Gay + better pick?

Hell no on Gay + pick. I feel sorry for Minny wanting to give Rudy $13 million+.

Honestly, I believe if the Grizz go the S&T route they can do better than Gnomes + Flynn. We'll have to wait and see. I also strongly believe that even teams with cap space will hesitate to give Rudy too much cash with the upcoming CBA up in the air. It'll be interesting for sure.

You don't have a choice, that's the problem. If Minnesota is going to pay him 13 mil a year and no one else will, he signs with Minnesota and you get nothing because you won't match. You'd be crazy to match that right before salaries are reduced in the CBA. You can't do a sign-and-trade unless the player agrees to it.

That said, I really don't think the Wolves would pay Gay that much. I was just curious what Memphis would do in that scenario. I think the Wolves have a deal set out with some team for a BYC player this year (can't do the trade until next year). Kahn (our GM) has suggested that we won't be having 3 rookies next year so we'll see.

Maybe, maybe not. The Grizz owner isn't a pauper. Hell, he may end up matching Rudy just despite other teams - which could be Pau 2.0 all over again. That said, and returning to your original premise, Rudy + the pick is too much to demand. That's just greedy. But hey, I understand that Joe Smith says that Minny thinks it's entitled - so whatever ;)

I'd say no dice and force Minnesota to pay him the max - and then watch them wallow in mediocrity for the next 5 years. Ensuring Minnesota is going nowhere for 5 years > Flynn, Gomes, and trading down in the draft IMO.

Bold #1 - We can absolutely chose to match so we do have a choice.

Bold #2 - Then Minn would be equally crazy to offer such a salary would they not?

Bold #3 - Then why are you wasting our time?

Where do I sign? Except for giving up the pick of course.

Thanks for the responses. To be fair, i was more or less parroting what other people have said to get some blunt answers. And I think you guys are right, I should take out the picks in this proposal. However, with the new CBA coming salaries are going to be lowered except those grandfathered in. My honest guess is NY will trade Curry's contract (1 bad year left) + Gallinari for Rudy Gay. That might be best for both teams, as the Knicks could sign Amare + Joe Johnson then and you'd have a very good young SF. The Wolves have some trade up their sleeve for the off season, though, but no one knows what.

On another note, there are no PGs in the draft between Wall and the late 1st round. We're a year away from Rubio coming over (according to Rubio anyway, he can always change his mind). And we have a pretty good stopgap PG already in Sessions. Oh, and we have a 20% chance of getting Wall. So there's a good chance Flynn (or Sessions) will be traded this off season for something.

As a Wolves fan, I wouldn't give up Flynn in a S & T for Gay. If Gay signs with us, we're already over-paying him, so I don't want to give up talent on top of that.

Thing is, if Rudy is walking for a bigger contract only, he'll want the extra year as well. Seems to me that his best option to exit will be a S&T.

Well, it's kind of like the choice between eating a bowl of cat vomit vs. eating a bowl of thumbtacks.

Yes, and Minnesota has a crazy GM.

Just really don't know at this point. Sounds fair, but the situation will be hard to judge until it plays out a bit more.

Flynn, Love, and the #16( could end up being Paul George). I'll take that deal every day of the week. That's a big package of talent. Memphis gets a great young pointguard to team with Conley, a really solid power forward that could take over if Randolph demands too much after next season, and a good prospect at small forward.

It's just too good to turn down and I imagine there will now be a bunch of Minnesota fans coming here and rightfully saying they would rather keep all three of those players and simply frontload a big contract offer for Gay that Memphis probably won't match.

I definitely agree that that would be an exceptional deal for Memphis.

I disagree, however, that Memphis would balk at a front-loaded offer. I actually think they'd be more inclined to match a front-loaded offer, as it would give them more flexibility down the road to extend Z-Bo, OJ, and Marc.

You sir, are most insightful. I've been preaching all along that, under the right scale, a front loaded deal would be the best case scenario for the Grizz. The worst case would be for a team to go into desperation mode after missing out on their 2010 target and offering a normal scale max deal to Rudy. That's what Heisley likely won't match.

So do you think the Grizz would match a max type offer? I think its around 14 mill correct? Obviously if im a wolves guy Id offer it first and see if they match but if they did id still do the trade i proposed. I dont think will get the minutes he wants/needs if Rubio's here, same w/ Love with Jefferson. Since we missed out on Turner, id like a wing like Rudy.

My personal opinion is that Memphis wouldn't match a max contract offer. They could have extended Gay last summer for less(Gay was rumored to have demanded Danny Granger type money) but offered up less than what Gay asked for.

So now it's a year later, Marc Gasol blossomed into a better center than I think the Grizzlies thought he would and his stock has risen, they traded a first round pick for Ronnie Brewer with intentions of re-signing him, plus Zach Randolph's unexpected great play has to have them thinking that he is more than just a two season rental so his situation will be a priority next summer.

Add it all up with Conley being in a position to talk about a contract next summer and it's not difficult to see that Memphis has to try and preserve some money rather than give out a max deal to one player.

Since Gay and the Grizzlies couldn't reach a deal last year Minnesota has been talked about as the frontrunner to try and land Rudy Gay. Only time will tell if they will or not. I think whoever Memphis ends up with by the end of draft day could give a hint into what they're thinking. But as a Seattle fan I remember when the Sonics drafted Vlad Radmanovic as insurance for Rashard Lewis possibly leaving. As it turned out Seattle re-signed Lewis for less than he thought he was worth(he obviously made up for it by finding a sucker in Orlando three years later) and Radmanovic didn't have a place with the Sonics. So insurance picks don't always help.

Thanks for the opinion. I've heard the same thing as far as the Wolves interest in Gay as well. I think Kahn wanted to get a scoring wing this summer and unless we can pull a deal w/ the 6'ers for Turner I believe Kahn is going to try to attain Rudy. I've read throughout the season Heisley would match any offer for Gay but i didnt know if he was serious or just talking
