Baltimore Bullets

1980-1983

Sidney Moncrief
Image

Code: Select all

1982-83 - 22.5P/5.8R/3.9A/1.5S, .524/.826, .602TS%, 35.7 MPG
All-NBA 1st Team, All-Defense 1st Team, DPOY, 4th in MVP Voting, 3rd in FT

[Sidney Moncrief] could shoot from the outside, post up, dunk over 7-foot centers, make the key pass, crash the boards, and slash through the paint for a layup ... He was one of the game's hardest-working and best-liked players ... Although he was a legitimate offensive threat, Moncrief may have been best known for his unrelenting defensive play. The 6-4 guard stayed in a textbook crouch, using his lithe, sinewy frame to keep within an eyelash of his opponent. His springy legs (he had a 36-inch vertical leap) gave him above-average shotblocking abilities, and the compact Moncrief could bench-press his body weight plus 30 pounds, which gave him the needed muscle to be a force underneath the basket. And he was always among the first players back on defense after a basket or turnover.

Buck Williams
Image

Code: Select all

1982-83 - 17.0P/12.5R/1.5A/1.1S/1.3B, .588/.620, .611TS%, 19.6TRB%, 36.1 MPG
All-NBA 2nd Team, All-Star, 7th in MVP Voting, 2nd in Rebounding, 1982 ROY

The first name said it all: Buck Williams went to work every night in an NBA arena with the same attitude as a construction worker on a 9-to-5 shift at the site. For 17 seasons, Buck might as well have traded in his Nets, Trail Blazers and Knicks uniforms and sneakers for a hardhat, overalls and a pair of dusty work boots; he did all the little things that most players shy away from. He grappled with the other bigs for rebounds (career 10 rpg average). He’d be the first to throw his body in the way of fleet-footed guards in order to draw the offensive foul. Although he had a respectable shooting touch and feasted on offensive put backs, Buck relished setting a perfect screen to free up a teammate. Williams was the everyman’s man who took pride in earning every cent of his paycheck by doing the things that go unnoticed—with a plan.

Dennis Johnson
Image

Code: Select all

1981-82 - 19.5P/5.1R/4.6A/1.3S, .470/.806, 36.7 MPG
All-Defense 1st Team Every Year in Era (80 & 81, All-NBA 1st and 2nd Team, 5th & 8th in MVP)

Forget about his scoring prowess (14.1 ppg over his 14-year career, with a high of 19.5 for Phoenix in 1981-82), forget about his three championship rings (one with Seattle in 1979, two with Boston in 1984 and 1986), Dennis Johnson was simply the best big-time defensive guard in league history. In fact, DJ was the only defender who could force Magic to turn his back on the Lakers' offense in order to protect, and maintain possession of, the ball ... "D.J." combined his bulk with rocket-launcher legs to frequently win battles against players nearly a foot taller ... His quick hands and feet made him a constant threat to strip the ball from opponents. He always seemed to be in the middle of the action. He could post up, crash the boards for rebounds and tip-ins, hit from the outside and lead the fast break. And he could pass with the best of the league's playmakers.

Bill Cartwright
Image

Code: Select all

1979-80 - 21.7P/8.9R/2.0A/1.2B, .547/.797, 38.4 MPG
All-Star, .608TS%, Among Leaders in PTS, REB, FG%, FT, Win Shares

... while Johnson and Bird were the subject of a lot of youth-movement hype, it was one of their contemporaries, 22-year-old Bill Cartwright of the Knicks, who quietly provided the ultimate proof that the kids weren't kidding by playing the game's toughest position every night—and playing it well enough to become an All-Star. Along the way he clearly established that he belongs right up there with Bird and Johnson at the head of the freshman class ... Cartwright leads the league's rookies—and most of its veterans—in scoring (22.4 points a game, 11th in the league), field-goal shooting (.545, eighth) and minutes played (2,730, second). To find comparable first-year stats for a center, one has to look back to the days when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was still Lew Alcindor. In 1969-70 Alcindor scored 28.8, shot .518% and was named Rookie of the Year. In just about any other season Cartwright would have gotten that award, too, but in a year featuring Bird and Johnson—whose performances on the floor have more than measured up to expectations—Cartwright may have to settle for No. 3, which is fine with the Knicks.

Walter Davis
Image

Code: Select all

1979-80 - 21.5P/3.6R/4.5A/1.5S, .563/.819, 30.8 MPG
All-Star, .608TS%, Top 10 in PER, FG%

Walter Davis was a special, special player. He was one of the most unbelievable pressure players that I’ve ever been around. He loved to practice and he loved to play. When we had a late game situation it was going to be either Walter or Paul [Westphal], but for the most part it was going to be Walter because he was uncanny. Pressure did not bother him. He never got rattled. He made a ton of game-winning shots for us. He had great speed. He could go from the top of the key at one end of the floor to the top of the key at the other end of the floor full bore and then pull up and the end result would be a soft, feathery jump shot. He was a great shooter.

Eddie Johnson
Image

Code: Select all

1982-83 - 19.8P/6.1R/2.6A, .494/.779, 35.8 MPG

NBA Legend Reggie Miller put it best when he spoke about one of the greatest pure jump shooters to play in the league when he said, "If you ever wanted to see someone shooting with textbook form, accuracy and follow-through, Eddie Johnson is the man."... At 6-7, Johnson has a quick release and doesn't hesitate to put it to use. He also finishes drives with an array of flip shots, half-hooks and scoops ..."Eddie Johnson's outside shot can change the tempo of a game," said Fitzsimmons, "He can bury a team."

Bob McAdoo
Image

Code: Select all

1979-80 - 21.1P/8.1R/3.4A/1.1B, .480/.730

Starters:
G: Dennis Johnson
G: Sidney Moncrief
F: Walter Davis
F: Buck Williams
C: Bill Cartwright

Bench:
6: Eddie Johnson
7: Bob McAdoo

OFFENSE
While the Bullets defense will be their obvious calling card, their offense is incredibly potent as well. The starting lineup features 21.5 on .563, 21.7 on .547, 19.5 on .470, 17.0 on .588, and 22.5 on .524. They are excellent at drawing fouls and attacking, as they average 7.9, 6.2, 4.9, 6.4, and 6.9 trips to the line per game. In this era, before the three point shot became an emphasis, Moncrief and Johnson were solid outside shooters, Buck had good range, Cartwright's shot was ugly but effective (80% FT), and Davis was one of if not the best shooter in the game. Both Williams and Cartwright can score in the low post and Williams will feast on garbage buckets. Add it all together, and the Bullets have a multi-faceted, effective, and very efficient offensive attack from their starting unit, but that's not even mentioning their bench. Bob McAdoo and Eddie Johnson, along with Davis are some of the best pure shooters in the game. The top of our bench compliments our tough starting unit with deadly scoring from two players capable of playing four positions.

DEFENSE
The Baltimore Bullets are built around the overwhelming backcourt defense of Sidney Moncrief and Dennis Johnson. Moncrief and Johnson - two powerful, intense, quick, smart defenders - will make life a living hell for any guards they face. We will deny penetration and make simple entry passes a challenge. Both players area also excellent help defenders and any momentary lapse will go the other way. Buck Williams is a perfect compliment to them in the front court as another all-hustle, all-rebounding, and all-defense player. It's safe to say that almost any loose ball will end up in the Bullets' hands. Next to Williams is Bill Cartwright, a ferocious competitor and very, very physical defender to anchor the low post. It all adds up to an unrelenting, brutal (in the most literal sense) defense. Get ready for 48 minutes of hell.

Houston Rockets

Image

PG- Michael Ray Richardson (NBA All-Star, All-NBA First Team Defense, NBA Assist Leader)
Image

Code: Select all

15.3 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, 10.2 assists per game, and 3.2 steals per game on .472 shooting from the field.

ROLE: One of the top all rounded PG's in the NBA. An All-NBA defender, a monster rebounder from his position, led the NBA in steals and assists, all while being an explosive scorer. He'll be the floor general for the Rockets, he'll expect to roam and create havoc defensively, while getting his teammates involved and pushing the tempo at any situation he can with his great rebounding ability, much like Jason Kidd in his Nets days.

SG- Andrew "Boston Strangler" Toney (NBA All-Star)
Image

Code: Select all

19.7 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 4.5 assists per game, 1.0 steals on per game, on .502 shooting from the field in 30.5 minutes per game.

ROLE: Mr "do it all," he'll play tough defense, always leaves it out on the court, and just a flat out nasty scorer, a great jumpshooter from the perimeter, a terrific slasher, and underrated play-maker. He'll be expected to play solid defense, roam the perimeter, knock down open shots, and be relied on as that 2nd/3rd unselfish option on the perimeter and do that at an efficient rate, clearly evidenced by his 50+%

SF- David Thompson (Coming off All-NBA, third in MVP voting, NBA All-Star)
Image

Code: Select all

25.5 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, 3.0 assists per game, 0.8 steals per game, 0.8 blocks per game on .504 shooting from the field.

ROLE: The premiere perimeter scorer, over 25 points per game, over 50% from the field, an explosive slasher, gets to the rim at will, nearly 8+ attempts from the line, and underrated defender, and coming off a season he finished 3rd in MVP voting. He'll be relied on to be the primary perimeter scorer and closer, and having the freedom to roam defensively and do what he does best, which is blocking shots and getting into the passing lanes.

PF- Elvin Hayes (NBA All-Star, One year removed from #3 in MVP Voting/All-First team)
Image

Code: Select all

23.0 points per game, 11.1 assists per game, 1.6 assists per game, 2.3 blocks per game on .455 shooting from the field.

ROLE: Hayes, all well known for his offense, his patent turnaround mid-range jumper and all rounded offensive game, but true basketball fans know that Hayes was one of the more underrated defenders to have ever played and frankly a better defensive player than offensive player. A good man defender, and absolutely elite perimeter defender. He'll get the garbage points around the basket, the secondary post scorer, much like his role in Houston with Moses, he'll play amazing defense, grab rebounds, score around the basket, and be an intimidator/shot-blocker around the post.

C- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (NBA All-Star, NBA's Most Valuable Player, All-NBA First Team, All-NBA Defensive First Team, NBA Champion)
Image

Code: Select all

25.0 points per game, 10.8 rebounds per game, 4.5 assists per game, 3.4 blocks per game, on .602 shooting from the field.

ROLE: Arguably the best player in this era, the best C in the league, an All-NBA defender, an amazing rebounder and still even at this age the best post scoring big man in the NBA. There was nothing he couldn't do on the floor, he'll be the anchor to our team both offensively and defensively. He'll be expected to score a large amount of points on ridiculous efficiency, play amazing defense, grab rebounds and make his teammates better with his superb passing skills.

C- Artis Gilmore (NBA All-Star, Finished 8th in MVP Voting, previous All-NBA Defensive Team)
Image

Code: Select all

18.0 points per game, 12.0 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists per game, 2.4 blocks per game on on .626 shooting from the field.

ROLE: Probably a top 3-4 center/big man in the competition, he'll rotate both backup big man spots, score on unheard of efficiency, be another ELITE interior defender, grabbing boards and blocking shots, all while not demanding any real shots for himself.

Team Writeup is Incomplete and Unedited

The Portland Trailblazers are a young up and coming team. Although the team lacks a true superstar, it is full of young and energetic players who can match up with almost anyone in the league.

Offense- Steady point guard Johnny Moore will be called upon to keep his high scoring wings happy. The team will run a motion offense using an excellent passing and shooting center, Jack Sikma, in the high post. Starting shooting guard World B. Free is a good handler as is backup guard Danny Ainge, either of whom can play the point in a pinch. The team will look to get out and run as much as possible... with Sikma rebounding and throwing the outlet pass, the high flying young forward tandem of Dominique Wilkins and Larry Nance are two of the best dunkers in the game. Free also has never seen a fast break he doesn't want to be a part of.

Defense- The defense will be anchored by the play of the bigs. Jack Sikma's 6.7 Defensive Win Shares ranks higher than any one else through the whole period. He will be called upon to guard the other teams top big. Larry Nance and reserve Mark Eaton are two of the top block shot artists of the time period. They ranked number two and three in the league in blocks in 1982-83, and Eaton did this playing 18.9 minutes per game... he actually averaged about 6 and a half blocks per 36. Moore will be called upon to put pressure on the ball and is considered one of the better defenders from the point guard position and has a tendency to pick up steals which will end in spectacular dunks at the other end.

STARTERS
C Jack Sikma
NBA All-Star, 2nd Team All Defense, 1st in NBA in Defensive Rating (97.2) and Defensive Win Shares (6.7).
