Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
As I've thought about this, I think my original goal of a 10 year game might be a bit ambitious. Maybe 6 or 8 year game would be better? I think it will be very fun, but 5-6 months, like others have pointed out, is a long time.
I received this email from Blazer50. Maybe this would be a good idea?

I can see that you are trying to pin down some of the particularities about your proposed game. There remain 2 fundamental flaws in that the game is built on the most contentious aspect of any of the GMAT games - the awarding of players through Free Agency. There are always subjective opinions about one offer being superior to the others or what team actually would be more attractive in determining where players land. I am fine with any ruling, but it will inherently piss people off. The 2nd problem lies in this game featuring 10 drafts. The draft is always the most unmanageable aspect of the game with players being in different time zones and unavailable - not knowing who will be on the board and what last minute offers will be available for their picks.
Regardless of how you tweak the game, these are issues and you cannot deny the problems that have (and will) occur.
Last dead horse is 6 or 7 months. Hell, the current game feels like it has been going on for 7 months - you designed it and your already designing the next one. Hello - that should tell you that a game spread over that time frame is a problem.
I know you (and commissioners) like a consensus and that is really what you are doing with this pre game thread. You are the creator and you have to take control. Having been more specific has helped get this moved along - but you need to just put the game out there and see if it flies.
NOW POSITIVE: What you have going for this is the invitation aspect. If you can attract Roc, KingBlackeIce and the other committed GMs then I htink this could be a fun game. However, my recommendation would be do something along these lines:
Assign 16 to 20 teams - However many GMs you have using the 1999 team roster. That establishes salaries and rosters, etc. Use the current 50 cap / 60 lux tax and you decide if you want a Hard Cap (the salaries won't have much affect on the early years).
Allow those teams to trade for a week.
An annual 2 (or 3 - you decide*) player amnesty (you can cut 2* guys each year with no impact - you get roster spots and salary relief. Some years you will just want space - other years - you will want savings - each GM decides - and you play with the 12 to 15 players we are accustomed to.
Assign a number to each Team / GM (alphabetically is fine).
Team #1 ATL - Blazer50 - scott.ins or scott.ins@aol.com
Tean #2 BOS - Keesinator - etc etc etc.
In an effort to shorten and simplify the game - I would combine a 2 year Draft & Free Agency. I will send you a sample in a separate email, but it will be the top 15 Draft Picks and Top 15 Free Agents for 2 years at a time - IE 2000 and 2001 combined with 60 player combined draft and FA pool - FA come from all teams so the unassigned teams best players will rotate into the game over time.
The numbered GMs will be pre assigned to rate the rosters going into the FA Draft. IE GMs 1/2/3 will send you their rankings for the 2000 season. That will determnie the order of the Rookie / FA draft for 2000-2001 pool. (You can apply your own lottery results for the top 3 if you want - but the 3 GMs will send their rankings to each other and you so there will be checks and balances).
GMs will know the order and can either Draft a Rookie (USE the rookie salary of the incoming Odd year (2001 salary / 2003 salary etc, for rookies). Or the GM can take a Free Agent, but your offer is what that player signed for in the Even # year they come on board.
The FA signings have to be within 125% + 100,000 of your released players if you are at or over the salary cap so the GM will have to plan who he thinks will be available and how the salaries will work with his roster after the amnesty - will he be under and no problem or will he have to move a salary to make thinks work. Total salaries out and FA salaries in. Should not be a big deal, but will affect Lux tax status, etc. Draft picks are ok and must be signed.
With this plan - you eliminate the confusion of setting your roster with 2 / 3 / 4 and 5 year contact terms. Just take on whatever they did sign for.
The next year will end with the 2001 season and will be ranked by GMs # 4,5,6 sending their rankings. The FA / Draft will be based on the 60 top players from 2002-2003 draft and FA pools, ETC.
I will send you a Pool Schedule. I know you have some graphics programs so you may be able to set up the pool easily, or I would do it as I do have a decent program and 2 monitors on my system to print see whats on line and what we are selecting. Sample pool to follow.

My insight from commishing the current GMAT is the farther back you go the the worse the information and less familiarity some of the GM's have with the players or at least the true sense of value. 4 yrs back and one forward might work. I would like to take part and was intially invited by ICE but the game length commitment would be a problem because I will be working outside the US for a month.
