Pairing Magic with a defensive point guard with 3 point range is a pretty common move for defensive fit reasons.
The Rose fit is a bit strange.
I think of Rose as a smaller and weaker but jumpier and more spry Dwayne Wade. Should work well off ball considering Rose played off of Deng/Noah, but significantly worse passers than Magic and also not at his Peak.
Magic played next to Norm Nixon, a worse offensive player than Rose and worse shooter all things considered.
I agree it isn't conventional but I think Rose is an easier sell next to Magic compared to say, the walking triple-double.
