Mel Daniels. In the season 70/71, he was the MVP of the ABA, with the stats of 21.0/2.2/18.0. We're pleased to welcome this franchise C to the Keelinator's and making the duo of Oscar and Mel!

After much deliberation, Team Snakebites selects Elvin Hayes.

Together with Kareem he makes for a grizzly front court on both ends of the floor.

Had to think about this one, but I think I'll go with:

Image

Billy "The Kangaroo Kid" Cunningham.

Cunningham's intensity is what makes him such a superstar. "Anytime he wants a shot, he can get one," says John Havlicek. "He's so quick and can jump so well that it's impossible to stay with him. And he's a good team player, passes off well. You can realize it when you play against him, and in the all-star game when you're playing with him."

One of the best all round forwards of this era.

Quick notes on my draft picks

1. Bernard King is a 3 era allstar type player. He will be my starting SF in the next 2 eras. Hes a 24ppg rookie in this era so could start but most likley 6th man.

2. Lanier is a 2 era allstar bigman.

Edit:

Dave DeBusschere is my pick. 8x All Star. 6 times All Defensive 1st. Great teammate and Champion (selected year: 1970)
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

I'll go with Bob Dandridge. Can do a little bit of everything, solid defender (made the Defensive 1st Team later on)/rebounder from the wing and a crafty offensive player with a good mid-range game.

"He was an outstanding player. He's one of those guys that you respect because you know that he is going to show up to play every night. (He was) a good shooter, he was kind of deceptive with his moves. He wasn't the kind of guy who was going to beat you with blistering speed and quickness but he understood how to get the most out of the talent that he had." - Rick Barry

"He was a great shooter, especially mid-range, and he could get his shot off on almost anybody. He really understood how to play. When they needed a hoop--even when he was playing with Milwaukee and Oscar and those guys--he shined. Of course, with Washington he was one of the focal points of that team. He just had the uncanny ability of making big shots at the right time. He talked the game and understood it and imparted that (to his teammates). He was very, very smart about the game and how he fit within the scheme and how he wanted everybody else to fit." - Paul Silas

Gremz just came on, and asked for me to pick Norm Van Lier for him.

Tiny Archibald. He was a perennial all-star in the 70's and 80's. He was the best PG of the whole 70's IMO, and I'm surprised he hasn't gone earlier. I'll take him in the 72/73 season, when he was an all-star, all-NBA and lead the league in almost everything. He was 34.0/11.4/2.8 that year and played decent defense. We are pleased to put up the win now core of Tiny/Oscar/Mel!

We select two role players that help us in the here and now and are also potential starters/6th men for the next decade.

Jamal Wilkes

Image

All defensive player with a mid range game, who helped Rick Barry and the Warriors win the NBA title. Also an unsung and integral member of the Lakers teams of the early 80s. A proven champion and a guy capable of scoring 20 ppg in a night with a nice midrange game.

Dan Roundfield

Image

Great two way forward who gives you shooting, rebounding, and All-NBA level defense. A double double 6th man in this era and great complement to Kareem as a starter in the next.

Julius Keye. May be taking him a bit high, but I love his defense and fit. I felt my team needed a bit more D, and Keye brings us that. He was one of the best shot blockers in his time, and also one of the best defenders in the ABA. He also has good length/height for his time, 6'10", 200 LBS. I also like the idea of my starting bigs both averaging more than 17 RPG, as I'll take Keye in the 70/71 season, where he was 14.7/1.7/17.5 and lots of blocks. We now we feel have a very balanced lineup of Tiny/Oscar/Keye/Mel.

Probably the best defensive guard of the next two era's.
