I'll select Lenny Wilkens.

Image

I think everyone knows Lenny's reputation as a fantastic playmaker and a very good floor general. But many disregard his ability to defend - had there've been All Defensive Teams prior to 68-69, he certainly would've been a strong candidate.

Lenny's professionalism and basketball IQ bring some stability to my team.

Following the trend of defensive players, I am happy to select:

Don Buse

Proven as a champion in the ABA, a 6 time defensive 1st team player in the NBA, assist leader, steals leader, efficient, just the guy you want on a stacked team.

I will select Adrian Dantley. He is a 20 point-scorer in his second year and will serve well in the future.

I'll go with Willie Wise.

Image

The ABA's best all round forward according to SI. A stifling defender, an ultra efficient all rounded scorer with an inside-outside game.

"Willie Wise was one of the toughest competitors I ever played against," said Erving. "He came to play every night. I really respected him. Willie was one of those players that the NBA fans never had a chance to see the best he had. That's because Willie was injured a lot when he played in the NBA. That was a shame. Willie Wise had game. A great game."

May be best defensive forward in league . . . Is quick enough to guard a guard when asked to. - Jim O'Brien.

"Willie came to play," explained former Indiana coach Bobby Leonard. "And that meant we had to play him. No one did the things he did on the court. He might have been the best two-way player the ABA ever had. By being a two-way player, I mean he came to play at both ends -- offensively and defensively. "I actually think he liked playing defense more than offense," added Leonard. "That's trait you don't acquire. That's just plain desire. You have to love the game to want to do that type of dirty work. But he did. His matchups against Roger Brown were some of the best the league ever had. I always loved Willie Wise. I wish he had played for me."

Earl "The Pearl" Monroe.

Having already secured a phenomenal front court and a terrific pair of defensive two era players to help them out, now comes the time to build an elite back court.

Given it will be a while before our next pick, we've decided we must get a steal while there is still one to be had. Dazzling and terrific ball handler and unselfish player with the proven ability to play alongside other great players and make the needed sacrifices. We are thrilled to add a player of this caliber with our 5th pick, and he will be a key piece to our winning equation in this era.

Lou Hudson. I need a SF to finish off my starting 5 and Lou is a perfect fit. He has one of the best jump shots, and will be great to play off ball of Oscar and Tiny. I'll take him in the 70/71 season where he was 26.8/3.4/5.1.

It's amazing how this guy always finds me, especially since he's a huge steal here imo. Even more amazing that I always have teams that he fits on. This time his fit is actually perfect.

I'll go with Walter Davis. I'll be using his 77-78 ROY season (only season he's eligible in this era) where he put up 24/6/3.5 off 53% shooting.

I'm going for Pistol Pete Maravich here. I could've selected a couple of other guys, but I feel he has the right level of talent - and talent surrounding him, to thrive in this role for my team.

I'm going off the grid for myself here and likely making a bad decision...Louie Dampier.

With back to back picks, we're pleased to select. . . Gus Johnson.

Image

One of the most oft forgotten PF's of his era. Had a reliable mid-range shot, and was arguably for a stretch, the best athlete in the NBA. Dangerous in transition, a rugged rebounder, and an excellent defender.

and with my other selection. . .

I have no clue who to go with, I'll go with Paul Westphal. He'll serve as a big time scorer at the G spot, 25+ PPG on efficient shooting in just 31 minutes of play. Good ball handler/shooter that will give me some flexibility.
