Which new GM a Team idea should we try?

Keep it the way it is.

Take top 30 players, and replace them with top 30 players from a past year, including keeping same salaries (Keeslinator's idea)

Start it normally, then draft in past players based on mid-game rankings without changing any current players (Warriorfan's idea)

Incorporate HOF teams into the league like the Bad Boy Pistons and Showtime Lakers (Warriorfan's idea)

Take a team that someone else used in a past GMAT game, and use that as the teams (Babyjax idea)

Take a 3 year period, and use the players from that. Keeps current players if overlaps occur. Trade, draft legends into the league. Trade more, then use remaining legends and 2012 draftees as the 2012 draft. (Blazer50's idea)

Take an old year, and use that. So like start at 2008 and go to 2009 instead of '11 to '12 (Lukekarts idea)

We need to wait until the last game is finished before we do that, because the commish and winner of last game get to chose first.

Another thing we need to look at is what are we going to to about mid season trades? Like near the trade deadline, the Magic and Grizzles had a trade looking like:

February 19, 2003: The Orlando Magic traded Ryan Humphrey, Mike Miller, a 2003 1st round draft pick (Kendrick Perkins) and a 2004 2nd round draft pick (Sergei Lishouk) to the Memphis Grizzlies for Gordan Giricek and Drew Gooden.

So should we go with beginning rosters, or ending rosters, and how do we find them all?

Basketball reference to find them all.

Whether we start at the beginning or end makes a big difference in some cases. Either that or we pick a starting date according to the below link:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2003_transactions.html

Notable trades were:

Posey to the Rockets (Dec)
Ray Allen + pick to Seattle for Desmond Mason & Gary Payton
Perkins to Boston
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Yeah, good find. My point is that there is no place on BBall-reference that shows the beginning rosters, from what I know, so we will have to come up with them ourselves

FA is the only problem then, because we're not planning on doing 02 FA, just 02/03 season, 03 draft, 03 FA

Ya, that would leave some issues, but I am sure there must be some list of where free agents signed somewhere.

I think what might end up happening is one/multiple of us go through every team and lay out the salaries and roster of each one, based on the trades of that year not happening (because we will be making trades)

The USA Today roster and salaries is pretty complete. The main starting rosters is what Id start with. Main lost would be options etc. To offset that I would again have an amnesty clause to make an even better free agent class.

I don't know about an amnesty again, I think with so much new stuff (02/03 season) that we might just want to stick with the normal CBA this round.

Do you have a link to that USA Today roster and salaries? Like I said, we have a place that lists all players and salaries for every team, but with transactions, we will most likely have to go through each one to find out what the starting roster will be

pg two is salary links. we don,t really need to know what transactions happenned since we will be the ones doing them. The amnesty clause flooded free agency with talent which kept salary more in check for the latest game for free agency and would make an mediocre 04 free agency crop better

A) why would we do 04 FA? Were doing the 02/03 season (trades), 03 draft, 03 FA, then trades again, then writeups
B) i think that with older players (new) different teams (new) and the fact that we already have a good CBA in place for that season, makes me think that we shouldnt add another new thing. The Amnesty this game was fun, but it was partly to shake up the game (which we are already doing with the different season), and partly because this is what the true new CBA might look like.

I would like to span into 04 because that too is a strong deep draft I think the drafts because of hinesite will be a bigger formality after ranking

Ok, I understand that, but it would have been nice to know that was your plan a bit earlier

Either way, I'm not sure its a good idea. I like going into the 2004 Draft, I was considering proposing that myself, but right now, we don't even have a good salary source or starting rosters. Plus, the FA isn't good, and throwing bad contract players into it will only make it a bit better (plus the amnesty will only affect the 03 FA, which is fine already)

Also, people tried this a while back. I remember talking to I think SamBone, and he said they tried a multi year thing in the past, but it doesn't work well because so many people drop out. We have tons of drop outs in normal games, I can't imagine how many drop out in a 2 year game.

So for this first time trying a new year, I think we should just do a normal game of 1 year, not 2 full year, because in the past it hasnt worked well, PLUS we dont know how good 02/03 by itself will run. In current times, every poster knows most/all players, including deep bench players. In 03, I bet there are very few of us that know every bench player, so research will take up even more of our time.

My biggest concern, however, is finding all the rosters and salaries for enough years, and getting them right. I think we'll end up having to go through each teams transactions, finding who had who at the start of the season. I can do most of them, if it comes down to that.

Where does it show the next years salaries, and the year after that?

Good find, thanks. Now we just need to finish the current game, to get this one started!

Is anyone willing to step up an be commish? I can't be the main commish, but I could help with a tier or FA, or the Draft.

I'll step up to be commish. If someone helps with free agency that would be great. I like doing the draft and the first round is should be easy because we know who turns out to be great players and the second round will be pretty irrelevant.
