Who do I pair with Dr. J? Is it the similarly skilled, less efficient, turnover-happy McGinnis? He's off the board? Damn.

Well, Dr. J belongs with this guy.

I'm taking George Gervin.

He was 2nd Team All-ABA after going for an impressive line of 23.4/8.3/2.5/1.6/1.6.

I prioritized getting an elite wing scorer/shooter to compliment Havlicek/White/Cowens and Gervin is that guy for me.

I'm taking PF/C, Marvin Barnes.

24/15.6/3/1/2 on 50 FG%

1974-75 All-ABA (2nd)
1974-75 ABA Rookie of the Year
1974-75 All-Star

His career was cut short due to drug use, and his game regressed after his rookie season, but for his first glorious season he was a monster. We feel his rebounding and scoring from the frontcourt makes us a much better team.

Ouch, Ice Ice Baby, you sure about that? Larry Brown threw up his arms in disgust trying to coach Marbury and Randolph . . . and now you are giving him Bad News Barnes? Ouch

To begin the 2nd round the Philadelphia 76ers select Tiny Archibald

Come now, we all know Larry Brown was more free spirited and open minded back in those days:

Meh, he'll make it work and Barnes was the most dominant big left. There was a certain 6'2 guard/forward I almost took but I have more balance with this pick.

Mike Green
Marvin Barnes
Bobby Jones
Ralph Simpson
Mack Calvin

Brown would manage.

Bobby Jones was also a F/C back then; he didn't shift down until he got older . . . but details.

Details.

I actually never knew he played C back then, I did know he played both F spots though. I'll leave him at SF shouldn't be a huge issue.

On a side note my starting 5 combines for 8 steals per game. :o

Randy Smith. Guard out of Buffalo, McAdoo's teammates, a terrific defender, athlete, and has a nice jumper from what I can tell.

Chet Walker.

Excellent and efficient offensive game, especially for the era, tough defender, and proven ingredient on multiple winning teams. A supporting member of Wilt's championship 76er team, and a primary offensive option for a terrific Bulls team in the selected year, and someone we feel can fit amazingly well with the winning mentality and teamwork we want to build with these new Knicks.

Walt Frazier will love him.

With the twelfth overall pick in the 1975 Contraction Draft, the Golden State Warriors are pleased to select. . . .

Image

Norm Van Lier!

One of the best defensive guards of the era, arguably only behind Frazier. An exceptional all round player known for his leadership on both ends of the floor. He helped anchor the Bulls into one of the elite defensive attacks in the league, often called the heart and soul of that Bulls team. I feel in this era, more players followed the specific roles of a PG, SG, SF, etc. Meaning that the PG brings the ball up the floor and initiates the offense. In this case, Van Lier could play either guard position while still helping Barry orchestrate the offense from the perimeter, with Hayes in the middle. In fact recently I've been watching alot of the full game tape of the 75 Finals, and Barry moreso picked up his assists from crisp ball movement, and came off screens and picks to free himself up for the jumpshot. He took a lot of shots yes, but from what I've seen, the "ball dominance," factor is overstated when talking about Barry.

Some will question his efficiency [Van Lier], but frankly speaking, Charles Johnson, the current starting G for the championship Warriors team was an even less efficient shooter, and didn't come close to impacting the game from a passing, defense, and leadership standpoint than Van Lier will bring to this team. There were other options, but in terms of defense, and role playing at a position of need, there's no better option.

For our 2nd round pick, the KENTUCKY COLONELS select a certain 6-2" guard/forward. The only guy in the ABA with a motor that rivaled John Havlicek, Ron Boone was unstoppable, going full speed at both ends for over 40 minutes a game. A 1st team All-ABA player he scored over 25 ppg at an outstanding .491 fg% with his great speed, athleticism and midrange game. But the thing he is best known for is that he didn't miss a game due to injury from his rookie year at age 22 to his last full year at age 33. No wonder his nickname was "The Legend."

And, I won't have to go into my rant about how Bill Bradley is the most overrated player to ever play basketball -- well, maybe just a little mention.

Following our theme of picking guys who were or would actually become teammates with the good doctor, the New York Nets select Charlie Scott of the Phoenix Suns.

The Celtics select Spencer Haywood!
Image
We were looking for a guy to give us a nice 1-2 punch up front with Cowens and we are happy that Haywood was still on the board. He is a monster on the boards and in paint with a nice jumper to boot, so we feel that he will compliment Cowens and Silas up front pretty well.
