GM A Team: Spring 2011 - FREE AGENCY

Post#1 » by lukekarts » Tue Apr 19, 2011 3:30 pm

Right, Free Agency is a little over a week away, so don't send offers yet!

This one is likely to move quickly (no 'marquee' FA's that will hold up the process). Therefore, from the offset, I am going to make it very transparent on what player's expectations are. I will also not value longer contracts on older players; e.g. if Shaq becomes a free agent, and you offer him 5 years MLE, and someone else offers 2 years MLE, it won't make much difference - Shaq isn't likely to be around for years 3/4/5 so that money is irrelevant. If I think players want to win, or want money, I will state this below.

When you do eventually submit offers, please try to stick to the following guidelines:

- One email with ALL offers (I appreciate this isn't always acheivable)
- The earlier you send your offers (DONT SEND THEM YET), the more likely the player will consider you. Think of it a signal of intent.
- Go in with your best offer first - not every player will want to renegotiate.
- If one offer is contingent on another offer, please state clearly. List players 1-5 in pref order for example
- If you have loads of capspace, please make this clear - players may sign as part of package deals
- I will reply to as many emails as possible. Please ensure you spell players names correctly, as I will 'CTRL + F' their names in my inbox when comparing offers.

For new players in particular:

Salary Cap = $60m

Cap Holds = $474,000 for every roster spot under 12 players

Mid Level Exception (MLE) = up to $5.8m starting figure, can be split

Bi Annual Exception (BAE, sometimes known as LLE) - $2m yr 1, $2.2m year two (optional)

Rises / Decreases - contracts can be flat, can rise by 8% if you don't hold rights, or 10.5% if you do hold rights. Contracts can decrease by 8%. The 8% figure is 8% of the value of the first year of the contract e.g. 8% rises on $10m = $800k, so the contract would be $10m, $10.8m, $11.6m, $12.4m etc...

Duration Contracts can be up to 6 years for players whose rights you hold, 5 years for those you don't.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Rumours are starting to circulate in Europe, that the likes of Ricky Rubio, Fran Vazquez and Joel Freeland will explore moving to the NBA this summer, should they be made an offer.

Meanwhile, David West, who only underwent surgery on 12th April for a torn ACL, is looking more likely to opt into his contract for the upcoming season. No timetable has been set for his return, although many predict he will be out of action until the new year.

Due to a change in my cap situation I am now going to be a player in free agency.

I would still like to run free agency, but for the following players, I am looking for someone else to receive the offers and make decisions to ensure the game is fair:

Shane Battier (unrestricted, bird rights held by Portland)
Marcus Thornton (restricted, Q.O. Extended by Portland)

Kris Humphries, Carl Landry, Chuck Hayes (UFAs), Jonas Jerebko (RFA)
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Sometimes for the good of the game I'm having to take things into my own hands.

Anyway, 3 players are going off the market now. I'm overriding the point at which negotiations have got to because quite frankly it was stupid behaviour by one GM that got us to that point with two of these guys; the third can't be beaten by another team now anyway.

Anyway, here goes:

Tyson Chandler has given his word he will re-sign in New York, for 6 years $78m. Ness will confirm the deal's structure later on.

Nene Hilario has given his word he will re-sign in Minnesota for 6 years, $78m. The deal declines over 6 years. Dan Atko will confirm later on.

Wilson Chandler has noted his commitment to re-sign in Denver for 6 years, $83m.

That's all for now. There's still a while before any other free agents will commit to any teams.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Toronto Raptors are pleased to announce the signing of Caron Butler
Image
$10,000,000---$10,800,000---$10,800,000(player option)--$10,000,000--$9,200,000(5 years, $50,800,000)

We are very happy to add Caron. He fills our biggest weakness, the sf spot. Butler will take over the #2 scorer spot, and be able to guard the 2nd or possibly even 3rd best perimter player on defense. Butler has a money mid-range jumper, can hit the 3, and is just solid in everything. We think our starting lineup is very well balanced, and with nice bench players we think we could challenge for a title very soon.

Toronto Raptors would like to welcome back Deandre Jordan
Image$5,800,000 - $6,240,000 - $10,358,531 - $11,446,177 - $12,533,823 - $13,621,469 (6 years, $70,000,000)

We'r happy to get Deandre back. He is one of the key pieces to our team. Top 5 in the nba in block%, top 10 in rebound%, and shoots nearly 70% from the floor. We think he's an excellent compliment to Bosh, and he is only 22 so should have plenty of room to grow.

The Raptors would also like to announce the signing of Chuck Hayes
Image
$7,000,000 - $7,560,000 - $8,120,000 - $8,680,000 - $9,240,000 (5 years , $40,600,000)

Hayes is an underrated player. Undersized at only 6'7" but he still is a top 5 post defender in the entire league. Hayes also is a very nice passer out of the high post, can finish around the basket, has improved his ft%, and he's a very good rebounder on both ends. We are very happy to add him to our now 3 man rotation of Hayes, Bosh, and Jordan.

We're very high on AA. Very good defense, can hit the 3 at a high %, and he can drive to the hoop a bit as well.
