GM a Team - We're bored edition - Writeups

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Mon Oct 10, 2011 3:27 am

Pretty simple, copy and paste your roster, if you want to expand on why you made transactions, that is fine. The judging criteria will be up tomorrow to give you a bit of guidance. Try to explain how you made your team better, and why they will be better now/in the future.

How rankings will work:
EDIT:
I've decided to change this up a bit for two reasons:
A) I don't want to total three different catagories
B) I looked at Roc's system from last game and like it.

All you have to do is rank teams that posted writeups on how well you think they did:
ex.
1. Toronto ( )
2. Team X
etc.

Then pick
a) 2013 NBA champion
b) 2018 NBA champion

Rankings will be posted in this thread.

Timeline:
Tomorrow at Midnight EST trading will be closed. I will still be taking offers for tier three free agents until that point. By Thursday midnight EST write-ups must be posted: copy and pasting your roster will be acceptable, however it will probably help you in the rankings to provide some commentary. All rankings must be in by Sunday at midnight EST and I will being accepting them Friday. I will post the results next Tuesday. Check the writeup thread for how the rankings will work (I will be posting the criteria soon).

Writeup

We started out with:

Timofey Mozgov/Kosta Koufos
Chris Andersen
Danilo Gallinari/Wilson Chandler
Arron Afflalo
Ty Lawson/Andre Miller

with Nene, Keynon Martin, JR Smith as UFA's.

Not a bad team by any means but a few issues.

-no star player, let alone superstar or franchise player, a medley of good but not great players
-a significant chunk of our team were UFA's
-only one legitimate big man in Nene
-a mix of mediocre veterans and youth, not necessarily a terrible thing but it is better to have a young team or one with vets that can compete for a title (my starting 5 is all young with the exception of Hill, and can compete for a title right now)

How we improved

PG: Paul is a superstar, the best PG in the league. He put up 22/12/7 in the playoffs on 55% from the floor. He is a do it all player that can turn Griffin into even more of a beast. His defense is exceptional and his shooting and passing is sublime. We started with Ty Lawson at this position.

SG: Dorell Wright just had a break out season. 16/5/3 and only 25 years old. His 3 point shooting is elite and he will be our floor spacer and 4th/5th option on offense. He is long and a decent defender, he compares favorably to Afflalo and Smith.

SF: Grant Hill is a smart, savy vet that is a very good defender. 13/4/3 on 48% FG and 40% from 3. He can defend the better of the two wing guys and just stand in the corner and feast on all the open looks he will be getting from Paul and Griffin. Really like Hill in this role.

PF: Blake Griffin is 21 years old and put up 23/12/4 on 51%. He is on the same level value wise as Durant, Lebron and Howard. We started out with a FA, Keynon Martin at this position. We'll let you be the judge.

Cc: Nene is a good big man, we like him a lot. That being said Hibbert has similar value, is younger and is a true C with size (7'2). He is a better shot blocker in fewer minutes and per36 he is a better rebounder and comparable scorer.

Overall we are just as deep, with one of the best players in the league, and one that is top 3 in value. We are young at every position except SF and are legit contender with room to grow. We can matchup with NOH, Hibbert has the size to battle Howard, Paul is as good or better than Williams and Hill is as good as anyone to defend Wade. Griffin vs. Ilyasova is quite the mis-match. As is Wright vs Barnes. We also have a bench and a legitimate 6th man in Diaw. We feel we can matchup with Dallas and Miami just fine and considering what we all started with I think that is saying something.

How our team will work
Our team will run through Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. We have a young, better version of Nash/Amare. Or a super version of the Hornets. Paul will control the offense with his main weapon being Griffin and he will use the shooters on the wings to space the floor. We fell we can compete with NOH and MIA and DAL even. Our bench provides a spark plug off the bench (Barea), defense and versatility (Walker, Diaw,Thompson Anthony) and experience (Miller).

Conclusion
This is the best job I've ever done with a team, whether I win it all or not I am pleased with this team. We can compete right now for a title and will surely win many titles for years to come.

Write-up:

What I did: The most important thing is that I didn't trade one of the top value players in the league and the reigning MVP. Trading a 22 year old that had the season Derrick did for anyone short of Lebron, who wasn't offered, is completely absurd. The biggest thing Chicago needed was to upgrade it's shooting/scoring and retain most of it's depth. My team moved Boozer for Bosh which gave me a younger second star as well as one who had a better season last year and has no injury concerns. We've still got Noah and Deng as well giving us what could be the best top 4 in the league. The signing of Vince Carter and J.J. Redick gives me good shooters at the 2 and gives Butler time to acclimate to the game. We see him as a Wes Matthews type player in the long term which is about all that's needed on this team.

We also managed to retain Asik for only the MLE and have him locked in for 4 years. We see this as a huge win as Centers as good defensively as he is are very difficult to come by. We're up against the cap this year, but could move/cut Korver/Watson to save around 7m or for an impact player on a longer contract along with the Charlotte pick, which looks great right now as the team doesn't look to be a contender in the near future.

In short, we got younger and better offensively while retaining the ridiculous defense we already had. With Rose having another guy or two to score in isolation (Bosh, Carter maybe), this team is set well moving into the future.

Sacramento Kings

Brooks/Mo/Blake
Thompson/Garcia/Lamb
Batum/Delfino/Clark
Patterson/Amir/Charlie
Oden/Turiaf

Why I should Win? I unbiasedly think I have the most balenced or nearly close to that. That's the most important thing. A good example are the Mavericks. Did they have they top team? Shoot no. Could make an argurment about not being top five.. The reason they did so well was because of fit. I immensely upgraded my SF and got some great depth. Oden is a huge risk, but if worse comes I have Turiaf to start.

Why I should Win best future? Because While having a balenced team, I have some really young prospects I think are gonna dominate in thier prime. Patterson, Batum, Thompson and Brooks.. I'm lovin it!

Oklahoma Thunder

Overview.
Our team is in the enviable position of being young and contenders. We had a young superstar in Durant and lots of young players. The Western Conference is highly competiive and we built a team that could match up with the best. We have a team built around shooters at all positions not unlike the two time defending champs the Mavs but much younger. With Dwight Howard and Dwayne Wade entering the conference we have bigs that can score away from the basket and size in the backcourt. With Camby and Ibaka we also have the length to battle the bigger teams.

[b]PF David West, Sergio Ibaka Troy Murphy
SF Kevin Durant, Terrance Jones
C E Brand,M Camby, HassanThabeet, Melmut Okur
G Kobe Bryant, T Mac,Terrance Ross
PG Kirk Hinrich, Tyreke Evans, Josiah Turner

PF Ibaka<David West. We still have Ibaka but West has been a 20 and 10 all star and consumate pro.
SF Durant=Durant. With Kobe on board Durant will have a player to max his potential.
C Perkins<<Elton Brand. Perkins has the intangibles Brand has the intangibles but reg drop in 20/10
SG Thabo<<Tyreke Evans. Thabo good defender but Evans 25-5-5 rookie campaign was no fluke.
PG Westbrook<Kobe How do you better the NBA 2nd teamer you get Kobe the 1st teamer.

Bench
We have a mix of young vets. Ibaka has all star potential and will supplant West or Brand in the near future . Kirk Hinrich is great 2 way combo guard who can mesh with Kobe or Tyreke. T-Mac, Camby,Troy Murphy are solid vets chasing their first ring and are solid reserves.

Future
The future is now and is bright for this team.

Kevin Durant $15,032,144 ,16,500,000
Serge Ibaka $2,253,062 2,800,000

PG: George Hill / Roddy Beaubois / Leandro Barbosa
SG: Brandon Roy / Jason Richardson/ Leandro Barbosa
SF: Jared Dudley / Chris Douglas-Roberts / Matt Caroll
PF: Al Horford / Jonas Jerebko / Jason Maxiell
C: Jermaine O'Neal / Josh McRoberts / Jason Maxiell

Image

Draft picks: All PHX + NJ '13 1st

Point guards: Combo guard Hill and 'the next Tony Parker' Roddy Beaubois will make a very decent point guard rotation. Both are able to score and will add some crazy athletism.

Shooting guards: Brandon Roy has star potential and will be my go-to-guy on the perimeter. Our bench play will be huge since we have Richardson and even Barbosa who can do some real damage.

Small forwards: Fan favorite Jared Dudley will start and he will bring some very decent three point shooting and defense to the team. Richardson is a nice sitxth man who will fit next to Barbosa. Matt Caroll won't be in the rotation and expire after next season.

Power forwards: Our new francise, Al Horford, is the best guy to build around. He's locked in a long term cheap contract and will develop into a star. Jonas Jerebko is a really nice prospect who will develop his game soon. Like Carroll, Maxiell won't play a role.

Centers: Weakest spot on my team but Jermaine O'Neal should be able to bring solid defense to the team for one year until McRoberts could take his spot or a center will sign with us.

All in all: Phoenix didn't have much value on their team. Gortat and Nash were the only players worth something. We got rid of all bad contracts and created a nice young team to move forward in the next years. We have two very nice stars on our team in Roy and Horford who will lead this team in the future. This team is very young and all core guys are locked into long term contracts. Older players like Richardson, Maxiell and Carroll will all expire after next season so there would be a ton of cap space to sign a very decent free agent. With two draft picks in a stacked draft we will be able to add more talent.
Hill on Nash going to the Lakers: “That’s like transferring from Duke and going to Carolina.”

Key Things/Reasons/Trades/Ideas/Transactions on why I should win:

Lost on Lotto/Drafting
A big thing that happened to me, was I lost on the Draft Lottery. I was the worst team in the league, but I ended up with the 4th pick. This isn't all bad, Sullinger is a monster. Easily the best back-to-the-basket scorer in the draft, and is a very hard worker. He has become more athletic, has a long wingspan, and also is further developing a mind-range game, all while maintaining a low center of gravity to win down low. So even though we didn't win (or get close) to winning the lotto, we like what we got. We got a great player who (unlike a lot of the other top prospects) will most likely reach his ceiling because of his great work ethic, and this is something we value. In the 2nd round, I decided to move back, and this worked out well. We got Robert Sacre, who is a huge human (7'0, 260 LBS) and will get a few minutes to see if he develops.

Money/Bad Contracts/Finances
One thing people usually say is "I got rid of all my bad contracts, and improved my team!". Lol. No one really does that, maybe they lose a trade to get rid of a bad contract or something, but here in Charlotte, we decided not to do that for a few reasons. 1) You can lose valuable prospects, and fast (especially with a team like CHA with so many bad contracts), 2) You save money that you won't be spending right away, and 3) why not let them run out? We didn't add any positives to move our bad contracts, why? Because now we have a 8M exp in Diop, which saves us money, that we wouldn't have used and we didn't give up any bad prospects (see what I'm referring to? ^^). We also weren't afraid to take on guys like Duhon and Salmons, who some consider to be overpaid, but with a city like Charlotte (who won't be attracting big names) getting prospects while taking on salary is a valuable move.

So you may look at my payroll and say "50M for a rebuilding team?" and I say yes. A 20M payroll wouldn't help us because even with a great, young core, good coaching and management, and cap, we still wouldn't sign big names because no one wants to come to one of the smallest markets in the league. We got guys on rookie contracts so we can resign them, and took on salary to get some players, because that's what a small market team has to do.

Valuable Vets
Salmons, Duhon, Frye are the only true vets on my team. Frye is still young, and provides a 6th man type scorer/spacer. Nothing special, but good to have. I have always liked Duhon, and he is a great 3rd PG. Great D, floor spacer, basically a Kirk Hinrich but not quite as polished. I LOVE him mentoring my PGs (Teague, Kemba) to teach them some defense. Salmons is the most important IMO. He has been successful on young teams in recent years (SAC, CHI, MIL) and provides a stability factor that helps my team a ton, especially if we make the playoffs soon. He's a do-it-all on offense, and can hold his own on D.

Raw Prospects
We have a few guys that are quite raw in their skills, and could be something special, or a bust. Daye is a pure shooter, but also has the size to be something great. Sacre certainly has the body, and has shown promise in collage, and I expect him to succeed in the pros. Aldrich (went to my high school  ) just hasn't found his rhythm yet, I still think he can be a starter in this league.

Adding another star to Sullinger
Once I found out that I lost the lotto, it was my mission to find some guys that could really help Sullinger and be a 2nd option to him. Insert Wes Johnson. Minnesota has been miss using him from day 1, and I think in our system, he will slide perfectly into a more advanced role. What's even more impressive is how I got him. Amir/Cunningham/Miles for Duhon/Salmons/Wes and a drop in the 2nd round. I love this trade because it gave me the best player who will be my lead perimeter guy, gave me a few solid vets, and I kept most of my talent.

DEFENSE!
I didn't necessarily plan this, but my starting line especially has a ton of defense. Biyombo is a monster at blocking shots, and really looks like the next Ben Wallace. Wes Johnson has always been a shut down defender, who is really smart in playing the passing lanes and using his quick hands. Henderson will soon be regarded as a top 5 defender, if he hasn't been already. Sullinger can bang with anyone down low, and will win. Kemba and Teague will work with Duhon to improve in this area.

Biggest thing: Added Value from nothing
My 4 most valuable players coming in were Augustin, Kemba, Henderson and Biyombo. I kept three of them, and made a lateral move (Augustin for Teague) for the other. Then, I added Frye, Salmons, Duhon, Daye and Wes Johnson, all from trades, with only one minor FA signing helping me (Miles). I think a team with such a negative view, to keep or laterally move with my top players AND add more talent should put me near the top of the rankings.

TRANSACTIONS:
1. Waived Emeka Okafor using Rashard Lewis Clause
2. Signed Hilton Armstrong, Tony Battie, Damien Wilkins, Joe Smith, Leon Powe to 1 year min contracts.
3. Signed Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, Ersan Ilyasova, Matt Barnes, Andris Nocioni, Ryan Hollins, Keith Bogans, Ronnie Price, Eddie House.

Key Points/Reasons/Trades/Transactions/Ideas on why I did the best job:

Trades before FA
I want to make a point that I did well before the big FA signings. I started with Ariza/Paul/Jack/Pondexter, and once I started clearing cap I was at Afflalo/Wade/Brooks/Pondexter/Greene. Clear upgrade. Wade>Paul, Afflalo is better than Ariza, Brooks is much better than Jack and I added Greene.

Picks
Because I wanted to clear cap near FA time, I added some picks while clearing cap. Great deal. So I have 2 1sts in 2013 and 2014, and 2 2nds in 2013. This will help a lot with depth and youth adding to my already great team.

Depth
It may look like I have crappy depth, but that isn't true. Barnes is an above average starter than can hit the open three and play hard-nosed D. Ilyasova is also a sweet shooter, but he is vastly underrated defensively. Hawes brings size, D and spacing, which is valuable for a big man. My min contracts are some of the best. Bogans is a starter in RL. Hollins, Greene bring some youth and D. House and Price will split backup PG minutes, and Nocioni is 3rd string depth.

Big 3
Yes, I won FA and got the best core in basketball. Dwight will win the paint against anyone, and will best anyone. Period. Wade is the ultimate closer in this league, and will be our main scorer. Dwill will become more of a playmaker, averaging around 16/13. My big 3 will be getting double teams like no other, and with that, comes wide open shooters. So either you have on of the big 3 open because you are doubling another one, or you have Barnes (Career 33% 3PT) or Ilyasova (career 34% 3PT) sitting wide open. Unstoppable.

Defense
The Orlando Magic have been a top defensive team ever since Dwight got there. That is with role players like Turk, Jameer, Shard, VC and Redick. Moral of the story? Dwight can make ANY team an amazing defensive team. Wade is also a top defensive player, has been for a while. Deron isn't particularly great, but he is top 10 for PGs. His size is a big advantage that he uses well. Barnes has always been a great lockdown defender. Ilyasova is underrated in this category, but like a lot, he plays very good man on D, just not good help, and with D12 there, that shouldn't be a problem.

VS Other Top Teams
CHI - Deron/Rose matchup is a great one. Rose should do well, but Deron should also be able to run our offense. Wade will dominate Carter/Redick like none other, and if they put Deng on him, big deal, Wade cannot be stopped. Barnes can easily shut down Deng, and Wade should get a break on D with only Redick and an aging Carter out there. Dwight will be somewhat limited, but no one really can shut him down, and Noah/Asik won't either.
DEN - Paul is notoriously known for struggling against bigger PGs. Deron is one of them. On O, Deron can post up Paul, but should be limited to Paul's quick hands. They have no one to cover Wade, so he should dominate this matchup to lead us to victory. Griffin will get his, but he'll work for them, with Ilyasova trying hard, and Dwight blocking anything near the rim. Hibbert should get in foul trouble early, and his lack of quickness will be an issue.
MIA - Ball movement will be an issue against my top tier D. LBJ will get his, so will Wade. Ellis's size advantage is limited against Dwill, and his lack of D, means Deron could have a big game. Gasol will have a good advantage over Ilyasova, but Okafor won't be able to hold Dwight either.

Draft Picks:
2013: GS 1st, NY 1st
2014: GS 1st
2015: GS 1st, 2nd

Started with:
A genuinely bad team. The Warriors finished 36-46, and deserved to; they were 18th in the league in offensive efficiency, 26th in defensive efficiency. They had little immediate prospect for improvement, having traded away their 2012 1st round pick (for the immortal Marcus Williams). The best player on the team was Stephen Curry, who was 32nd in the NBA in PER overall, and 7th among point guards.

Ended with:
A genuinely good team. The best player is Kevin Love, who was fourth among all players in the league in PER, and first among power forwards. Three other starters are above average, young, and still improving (Gortat, Harden, Lowry) and the fifth is an outstanding prospect (Quincy Miller). The bench (Udoh, Collison, Aminu, Reggie Williams, Calderon) is solid throughout. The defense will be far better, the offense will be more efficient, and the rebounding is outstanding. If Harden turns into an All-Star, as I believe he will, we've got a contender.

Rotation

Jason Kidd [28] / Jameer Nelson [26]
Caron Butler [30] / DeShawn Stevenson [12] / Dahntay Jones [spot]
Paul Pierce [30] / Shawn Marion [24]
Dirk Nowitzki [36] / Glen Davis [6]
Tyson Chandler [30] / Chuck Hayes [18] / Jason Collins [spot]

Summary

NBA CHAMPIONS 2011 & 2012

Why I should win

It's hard to improve Dallas for a multitude of reasons:

1. They were reigning champions
2. They had an old core (Dirk/Marion/Terry/Kidd all way past 30)
3. Half the roster were expiring contracts (Butler, Chandler, Barea, Stevenson y1; Terry & Kidd y2.)
4. The payroll & new cap restricted trades

BUT unlike GM's who came before me, I took on the challenge of making Dallas better. And to that effect, I think I succeeded.

The biggest coup was undoubtedly the trade for Paul Pierce. Still an elite Small Forward in this league, still posting a PER of 20 and an elite TS% of 62%. He's the perfect compliment to Dirk, and excellent off-ball player, good shooter, reliable, clutch, a closer; basically better than anyone Dirk has played with. In addition to that, I re-signed Butler and Chandler; added a former All Star PG in Jameer Nelson, who can stretch the floor and allow Kidd to rest; whilst moving from the expensive Brendan Haywood to the younger but cheaper - and arguably better defensive player in Chuck Hayes and PF depth with Glen Davis.

Most importantly, despite a dozen other contenders making improvements, I retained the title.

It's hard to win with Dallas, because there's only one way to go from the top and the roster lacks valuable trade assets outside of Dirk to get things done. I didn't have the lucrative youngsters to bring back a Dwyane Wade or even an Eric Gordon type of player; so I focused on building the deepest most experienced team, built around great defence and two of the most talented offensive players of the past decade.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Andrew Bynum / Joel Przybilla / Nikola Vucevic

SALARIES:

Image

DRAFT PICKS:

2013 - First / Second
2014 - First / Second
2015 - First / Second

SUMMARY:

Building Upon the Young Core

A lot of people feel the need to trade everyone in these games but I was happy to let Philly retain its identity. Jrue Holiday has All Star potential. With two years experience under his belt he has only just turned 21. He's a great defender and tall for his position, has a good jump shot, shows great awareness. I'm sold on his potential; seeing a lot of similarities between him and Chauncey Billups.

Evan Turner's struggles were perhaps aided by the overlap in talent between him and Iggy. But he was 2nd pick for a reason, and given more freedom with the ball I expect him to eventually become a perennial All Star in this league.

Positional Improvements

PG: Jrue Holiday & Daniel Gibson = Jrue Holiday & Louis Williams
- Gibson is a better shooter than Lou and is on an expiring contract, but overall talent similar

SG Evan Turner & Jodie Meeks = Evan Turner & Jodie Meeks

SF Wilson Chandler & Stephen Jackson = Andre Iguodala & Thaddeus Young
- Iggy was the best player but Chandler and S-Jax are less ball dominant and better fits.

PF Paul Millsap & Antawn Jamison >>>>> Elton Brand and Mareese Speights
- Millsap is more productive all round than Brand, more mobile, more potential, better contract. Jamison is a proven 6th man.

C Andrew Bynum & Joel Przybilla >>>>> Spencer Hawes and Nikola Vucevic
- Bynum is a top 3 Center. Hawes was arguably the worst starting Center last year

Summary

Adding Bynum, Millsap & Chandler has given a great young backcourt a great young front court to work with. As of the close of the 2012 off-season, Holiday (21), Turner (23), Chandler (25), Millsap (27) & Bynum (24) are an average age of just 24. 3 are potential All Stars, two are likely to be excellent role players for the remainder of their careers. It's a pretty good balance and the outlook for the next 5 years is great, especially considering all these guys want to play D.

Meanwhile, I've made sure my bench is well balanced with veterans and youth, as undoubtedly the young guys will need to learn from someone. SJax, Jamison & Przybilla are veterans with a lot of experience to share, whilst Meeks and Gibson are elite shooters, helping make my bench one of the strongest in the league. All factors combined, I will remain competitive and build on the 5th seed from the 2012 season.

I've retained a huge amount of financial flexibility too ($18m committed next year, $15 the year after), AND all of my future picks.

Long term plan: Top 5 seed for the next 3 years; possible contention in years 4-5 depending on how good my core become.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Why I should win:
The team I inherited in Cleveland was mediocre, with a couple of solid pieces to build around. I was determined from the get-go to hold onto my own 1st round picks and Kyrie Irving at all costs, unless I got a franchise changing player in return. I achieved this. My proudest moment of the game was turning Varejao, Sessions, Casspi, Jamison into Williams, Fredette and then into Harrison Barnes.

I truly believe in my core of young players. I have my star power in Kyrie Irving, Harrison Barnes and Andre Drummond. I went out and got Brandon Rush and Brandon Bass, two guys who are great role players and play on both ends of the floor. I have some great scoring options in my second unit in Ridnour, Crawford and Hansbrough. I also have some great defensive options throughout my bench in Eyenga, Singleton, Williams and Sanders. We also believe we got a real gem in the 2nd round of the draft in Kendall Marshall.

We believe the team we have assembled can make a run for the playoffs this year, and be a title contender within 2-3 years. We have a legit center, a true point guard, a clutch wing player and all of which play good defense and are widely regarded as good teammates and good citizens.

After losing LeBron, we are proud to have assembled a team that Cavaliers fans can be proud of.

Depth Chart

PF - Perry Jones / Tobias Harris
SF - Paul George / C. J. Leslie / Quincy Pondexter
SG - Jeremy Lamb / Avery Bradley / Willie Warren
PG - Brandon Jennings / Ronnie Price

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before
I started out with one of the worst constructed teams. Bogut and Jennings were my best trade pieces, and I ended up keeping Jennings. Stephen Jackson had very little value, Udrih was basically negative value. I also started with a 45M payroll.

Now
Now I have a team that has a lot of potential. I think my core of Jennings, Lamb, George, Jones is very, very good, considering what I started with. I also like Avery Bradley, I think he can be very good one day too. Yeah I need a center, but I'm confident I'll be able to fill that void down the road, with five 1st rounders in the next two years, plus all of the cap room.

Payroll
We have an amazing payroll of only 20M. This is going to give us so much flexibility down the line. To cut my payroll from 45M to 20M is pretty impressive I think, especially considering what I was able to add.

Picks
5 picks in 2013 (3 1sts), 3 picks in 2014 (2 1sts), 'nuff said. We're going to build this team through the draft. With the roster I have now, I should most definitely have a top 5 pick in 2013 to add a star player. I'm excited about all of the picks I got and hope I can get a steal with one of those late 1sts.

Overall
I fully committed to the rebuild, something the real life Bucks fail to do. I think the blueprint to rebuilding is to keep/acquire players with high potential, clear all salary possible/stay cheap, keep/acquire picks, and to tank to get high lotto picks. I feel like I did all of this. To be honest with teams like DEN and NOH I really have no business winning this game, but I hope I get ranked high either way.

Toronto Raptors
Image

GOALS
I wanted to build a team that utilizes DeRozan's talent because I feel that with the right surroundings he can be an absolutely devastating offensive player.

I also wanted to improve the defensive potential of this team because it has been something that has held them back from the beginning of their existence.

My starting five is one of the most well-balanced and young units in basketball. Anthony Davis has a tremendous frame, a nice jump shot, and a defensive tenacity that is not rivaled by many players. Valancianus, likewise, is an energetic defensive player. He also has great instincts at grabbing offensive rebounds in the post and a very good jump shot for a center.

Beal is one of the most exciting prospects in basketball. He has a pure jump shot, he's athletic and is a very good defensive shooting guard.

And Augustin? One of the purest shooting point guards in the league, a good defender for his size, a true floor general. I think he is exactly what a point guard should be. Is he the next Chris Paul? No, but he is very, very good.

Overall I am very excited by this team. It has three players drafted in the top 5 in the past two years, plus two other lottery picks in the starting five. Motiejunas should have been a lottery pick last year, and Thomas was a very high draft pick as well and has turned into one of the best young defensive players in the league. Richard Jefferson is an extremely talented wing off the bench, and Weems is another young player I am excited to see progress. This team is an example of exactly what a rebuilding team should do. And in two years when all of my big salaries come off the books and the only commitment I will have besides rookie contracts is Tyrus Thomas and DeMar Derozan's contract? We should be able to add a max free agent to our team, along with another lottery pick or two from prior years. Too bad the real Raptors aren't this full of hope.

DEPTH CHART
Jonas Valancianus 28/Zaza Pachulia 14/Donatus Motiejunas 6
Anthony Davis 28/Tyrus Thomas 16/Donatus Motiejunas 4
DeMar DeRozan 34/Richard Jefferson 14
Bradley Beal 28/Sonny Weems 12/Goran Dragic 8
DJ Augustin 30/Goran Dragic 18

SALARIES
I know people aren't too crazy about Jefferson and Thomas, and I have two things to say about that. The first is that I really like Tyrus, and everyone knows that the Raptors need interior defense. He only costs about a million more than Amir Johnson but is a much better player. Jefferson essentially replace Klieza's contract that ran a year longer. Trading for him was key because that year is the difference between me offering the max to one or two players in free agency or only being able to extend the players I have. Also, I cut Bargnani's contract, amnestied Calderon and collecting these two "bad" salaries was key in getting Bradley Beal and Donatus Motiejunas (I understand I am probably the only person who is super high on his potential).

What did I do?

I started my first ever GM a Team game without any experience, so when I started I took my favourite team and I didn’t even know, what should I do – try to keep Dwight and go for the win, or rebuild. I tried to get as much value as possible, but I didn’t succeed because nobody liked my assets. I always saw “nobody in your team outside of Dwight interests me”, so I decided to trade Dwight and go to rebuild.

What do we have now?

Now we have a team, that lost all bad contracts/unattractive pieces (Arenas, Turkoglu, Duhon, Q-Rich). To be honest, I traded everyone away, I don’t have a guy, that would have stayed with me throughout the whole game. We think, now we’re a deep team, but more on that later..

Frontcourt:

We’re mostly proud with our frontcourt. Cousins/Favors is extremely extreme frontcourt. We also have Jeff Green, who I think, has too little value in this game, at starting SF position. Backing up for those guys, we have young defensive and rebounding specialist Robin Lopez. And another offensive talent Michael Beasley will be our 6th man, to back-up both Green and Favors. If we go even deeper, we have a good young energetic Dante Cunningham and expiring Rashard Lewis as a mentor for our young guys. Motivation to play and practice hard, wouldn’t be a problem with such a deep team.

Backcourt:

Things here aren’t so sweet. I admit, that I failed to find the PG, that would fully satisfy me. I just got many young guys with the potential to become a good PG. We will try Marquis Teague, the 15th pick in the deep draft, to be our PG. If he doesn’t succeed, we have nice replacement in Mario Chalmers and Jerryd Bayless. We really love defense and shooting Mario brings, we like Bayless energy as well. Farmar is a guy who wouldn’t see many minutes, but he’s an expiring, so we will part ways with him after the season. As you see, position is really deep, and even though nobody is an amazing PG, but motivation is not a problem again. Speaking about SG, we love Marcus Thornton, who has arguably the best contract in the game. Should I remind you about his amazing play in Sacramento? I guess, not. We like him really much. Backing him up is our combo guard Bayless and we have a dead eye cheap shooter Cook, who may stretch the floor and is pretty young too.

Overall:

I think I’ve done pretty well in my first game. I got not the easiest job in the league, but now I have a young team that is not over the luxury tax anymore, we have a lot of talent and in 2011-2012, we didn’t even make it to the lottery! Yes, that’s a bad thing, but making the playoffs in the rebuilding phase just shows that my team is strong now with the big opportunities to improve in years to come.

Utah Jazz Write up

Overview
We found our team in the unenviable position of being a 500 team an 8th seed at best that salary obligations had us at the cap. We decided to rebuild the team around Eric Kantor and Alec Burk.

Coming into the 2011 season, Yao Ming's retirement, saving them their Amnesty clause, was the Rocket's greatest asset. From humble beginnings, through constant communications the Rockets have assembled a group of young, team oriented players who will compete for the Western Division and NBA title in the next 3 to 5 years. They still need to add some depth, but their starting 5 will rival any group of starters in the Association. Three of their bench players have enjoyed tremendous success in their careers and are still young enough to contribute for many years. The others are highly touted rookies with unlimited potential. All the key players are signed for several years so this team will have time to develop their chemistry.

This is not the Kyle Lowry, Chase Budinger, Chuck Hayes Rockets anymore and will prove to be a major force in the West.

Since I was allowed to take on the NY Knicks just before the 2012 Draft, I will post both write ups in this thread. Entering this game, it was determined that we would operate under the new "Hard Cap" Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Knicks were clearly on the Super Team course and I immediately had to change that plan. In 2 major plays, NY moved Carmello Anthony and used the Amnesty Clause on Chauncey Billups. The Knicks were fortunate to be able to resign Chauncey in the 2011 FA period so the strategy worked. From that point, it was again constant attention to what teams were looking for and communicating with as many GMs as possible to make moves that would enhance the Knicks. In the end, 4 of the Knicks starters were ranked in the top 10 of their positions League wide in 2011. Brendan Haywood - the other starter won an NBA championship and was a major contributor in those playoffs. The Backup PG has a 19+PER and the balance of the roster average over a 13.5PER and are solid defenders.

The NY Knicks are back & are going to challenge for the NBA title for the next 5 years.

POSTSCRIPT:
I again had a great time making deals with many of the GMs who were active in this game. While "We're bored edition" - like all of these games was not without issues, I would like to extend my thanks to the Commish for taking on this thankless job. I found him to be responsive and using sound logic and judgement in rendering his decisions - AND not all went my way.

I did have issues with those GMs who did not get into compliance with the $80M hard cap, which was one of the most interesting aspects of this game. Many of us had rosters that were at or over the Hard Cap, bit the bullet and played by the Hard Cap rule. BUT - I know there were "allowances" and enjoyed trading with some of these offenders.

The GMs that gripe me and who I would recommend be monitored or excluded in future games are those who for whatever reason decided to sit this game out. Whether a ruling was made against you, or your life just got in the way and would not allow you to continue, You deliberately did not participate and kept whole teams on the side lines to the determent of the game.

If you roster has 10 players or less - You made 10 or less trades in 2 years of games - you updated your roster 10 or less times, You were undermining this game. Got a problem, get over it! 28 GMs wanted to participate and you wanted to wreck the game. It was not a winning strategy and you did not get poor offers for the past 2 months. There are lot's of reasons not to participate, but man up like Rocdogg - let everyone know you disagree with what's going on and get out.

For the rest of you who I had a chance to deal with, whether we traded or agreed to disagree, I thank you all. The fun is in the negotiations and there are a lot of approaches to building a winning team that are reflected in these rosters. Thanks and Good Luck.
