GM a Team 02/03 Edition: Contraction Draft

Post#1 » by BlackIce » Mon Oct 24, 2011 7:38 pm

We are doing to start with fresh teams (original rosters) and have a contraction draft. You have to cut a player to draft a player and the number of rounds will be determined later on. We only have 15-16 GM's and trading has been slow so we felt we needed to add a jolt to it. When it comes to judging you will judge how much the team has improved from where it started.

We will be going by 2001/2002 since we are playing out the 2002/2003 season, so rankings so:

Eastern Conference W L W-L% GB PS/G PA/G SRS

Atlantic Division
New Jersey Nets* (1) 52 30 .634 — 96.2 92.0 3.67
Boston Celtics* (3) 49 33 .598 3.0 96.4 94.1 1.75
Orlando Magic* (5) 44 38 .537 8.0 100.5 98.9 1.25
Philadelphia 76ers* (6) 43 39 .524 9.0 91.0 89.4 1.27
Washington Wizards (10) 37 45 .451 15.0 92.8 94.2 -1.58
Miami Heat (11) 36 46 .439 16.0 87.2 88.7 -1.85
New York Knicks (13) 30 52 .366 22.0 91.6 95.6 -4.15

Central Division
Detroit Pistons* (2) 50 32 .610 — 94.3 92.2 1.69
Charlotte Hornets* (4) 44 38 .537 6.0 93.9 92.9 0.57
Toronto Raptors* (7) 42 40 .512 8.0 91.4 91.8 -0.71
Indiana Pacers* (8) 42 40 .512 8.0 96.8 96.5 -0.07
Milwaukee Bucks (9) 41 41 .500 9.0 97.5 97.7 -0.62
Atlanta Hawks (12) 33 49 .402 17.0 94.0 98.3 -4.41
Cleveland Cavaliers (14) 29 53 .354 21.0 95.3 98.6 -3.53
Chicago Bulls (15) 21 61 .256 29.0 89.5 98.0 -8.52

Western Conference W L W-L% GB PS/G PA/G SRS

Midwest Division
San Antonio Spurs* (2) 58 24 .707 — 96.7 90.5 6.27
Dallas Mavericks* (4) 57 25 .695 1.0 105.2 101.0 4.41
Minnesota Timberwolves* (5) 50 32 .610 8.0 99.3 96.0 3.58
Utah Jazz* (8) 44 38 .537 14.0 96.0 95.1 1.20
Houston Rockets (11) 28 54 .341 30.0 92.3 97.2 -4.31
Denver Nuggets (12) 27 55 .329 31.0 92.2 98.0 -5.19
Memphis Grizzlies (13) 23 59 .280 35.0 89.9 97.3 -6.74

Pacific Division
Sacramento Kings* (1) 61 21 .744 — 104.6 97.0 7.61
Los Angeles Lakers* (3) 58 24 .707 3.0 101.3 94.1 7.15
Portland Trail Blazers* (6) 49 33 .598 12.0 96.6 93.7 3.20
Seattle SuperSonics* (7) 45 37 .549 16.0 97.7 94.7 3.24
Los Angeles Clippers (9) 39 43 .476 22.0 95.7 96.1 -0.09
Phoenix Suns (10) 36 46 .439 25.0 95.1 95.8 -0.30
Golden State Warriors (14) 21 61 .256 40.0 97.7 103.1 -4.80

Pick a PLAYOFF TEAM. The contraction pool will be filled with players on non-playoff teams.

Lemme know what you guys think. Not just my idea, Kees and Warriorfan as well. IM me and I'll be happy to answer questions.

There is a heavy imbalance eg five teams from Pacific Divison if we keep same teams. We can go by conf. The contraction and dispersal draft does make it a different game and we might want different teams. Can we use the 16 playoff teams probably the best as a start and then do the draft for there.

Ice since you are the winner of the last game you can pick what team you want to start with and we then can reshuffle.

I would also suggest instituting a hard cap ceiling.

I think if somebody wants to change their team they can only change it to the teams that aren't taken I liked the concept tough

Ill change to the Celtics. Portlands payroll is too high if we are doing a hard cap.

OK talking to a few GM's, some want to continue with the game we had (I'm fine with that, I had a decent team), some want to do the draft (I'm not sure we will get enough GM's, but I like the idea) and some want to start a current era game.

Post what you guys think, I understand people are busy but I'd like a game with active GM's regardless of what version of the game we play.

Cheers

I liked how my team was doing so far, but i think with the lack of GMs, starting a current era league(maybe a contraction league with that) or just doing the 02/03 contraction draft would be better

Well, personally, i got into the game we started and then boom, everything reseted. So i would prefer doing the game we started, but we have to get more GM's somehow.
I'm thinking, why people aren't joining this one.. Is this game got boring for them or they don't like the idea of 02/03?
Anyway's i'd play whatever happens, but my priority would be finishing what we started.

Just got back to confirm my Pau Gasol trade and found we were done!

New Contraction draft - which I originally suggested. However, the 02-03 game was WEIRD because we all have 20-20 hindsight. Judging would have just been stranger knowing some guy was one year away from injury, etc.

My quick comments to KingBlakeIce's post:

Well since 6 teams just started playing the game today which would have initated a good deal of activity - I think this is a knee jerk reaction to your being aggressive and probably my Camby . Den pick trade.

scott.ins: GSW was getting involved - MN was working a plan, etc.
Kingblackice1991: it wasn't justme: warrior fan, etc
scott.ins: So we throw out the work we have done and make up new rosters- etc.
scott.ins: Hate the proposed contraction draft - Same reason this game did not work. 20 20 hindsight makes the trading weird
scott.ins: You want a new game - Start with 16 (20 however many GMs will sign up) teams in 2011 with their draft picks on board. Start trading with the other 12 "contracted" teams on the sidelines - all sidelined team players extended for 2 years so FA not an issue on expansion draft portion of the game. NONE of them come into play until the "contraction" draft.

I would suggest our $80M hardcap / 1 player amnesty rule until the Contraction draft. The amnesty player has to be designated in the first week or you have to keep him - delcare when you eliminate the Team Option players, etc.

Then trade a week - do the 2011 FA period 1 week - do a 1 round 2012 draft - trade a week then do the contraction draft. 2 rounds to select from the 12 teams on the sidelines. Each GM's team can cut 2 players prior to the contraction draft from your existing roster and make room for your new roster. (Full amnesty provsions for these cuts)

At that point - becasuse we will be getting the 32 best players from the 12 contracted teams we need hard cap to go up to $100M. (still a squeeze with the quality of players in the contraction draft.

I just think that knowing what actually happens in a players career makes trades too weird. The fun is in the speculation of how the pieces might fit together.

well I only joined this because it was different, doing a 02/03 is a great idea I actually want to finish what we started but I'm good with a start over and contraction too, I wouldn't join a current one version it's the same thing over and over again

That is actually what I wrote, all 3 of us came up with this. But fair enough, I don't care what we do, just that it goes smoothly. I'll go with the flow.

A lot of people on here don't care much for the history of the game, I think that's why this game is struggling to really take off and gain more GM's. I was having fun with the current game, but so many GM's running two teams doesn't really work out well, imo. My vote would be for a clean reset and a contraction draft, but if what we want most is more active GM's then I say we do current era since those rarely have problems filling up.

I don't want to lose what we already did. I say we do a ranking of what we already have done so far and use that as a basis for the order for a contraction draft. Worst team so far gets first draft from contracted teams. etc. We'd have few days to do trades before we set the ranking rosters.
