Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
Ok, by no means is this a signup thread. This is just to get some talk going around since not many people check the Thinktank thread. I also understand that this is just a potential game and that with negative feedback, we will go back to doing other games. I also know that we won't be starting this game for a while, once the current All-Reject game and maybe the current GMAT games are over.
Another thing I want to mention is that this game's signups are by invite only. This isn't because we only want to play with people we know, I love to meet new people, it's just that this game will most likely be about 6 months, and we need proven people to stay in it and stay active.
So here is a list of potential people to join, this is by no means an actual invite. Just a list that BI came up with of people that could be an option to join.

Ok now on to the actual game:
Ok so I've thought of a game over the past few days, I think it's pretty good, I'll try to sum it all up in one post.
How it starts:
15ish GMs, have to be very active and know the NBA well.
Start in 99/00 season, with an auction draft. Go 10 years, each year being about 2 weeks in real time, for a total of about 6 months real time. 7ish days for trading, 7ish days for off season.
Have 10 players per team, auction will determine how much, raises and years of contract. Have to have two players for each year of contract, max 5 years (IE, 2 players you sign have to be on 1 year deals, 2 have to be on 2 year deals, so that we actually have decent FA).
Details: (Can be changed)
-4 Tiers, 1st three with about 20 players per tier, last with everyone else.
-No max bid
-60M of spending cash
-Can bid any multiple of 100,000 (IE no $400,001 contracts)
-No raises, to keep things simple
-Min bid and cap hold is 500,000
-Money per year outweighs years (IE 10M per, for 2 years will get a player over 9M per for 3)
-Ties on money will go to longer contract (IE 2 teams bid 10M per for a player, whoever gave longer year will get him)
-High bid will last 12 hours till being signed (IE you give a player the high bid at 8:00 AM, and no one bids above you, he is yours at 8:00 PM)
-Clock will be suspended from 12 AM-8 AM EST. You can still bid during then but the clock won't run.
-Must have exactly 10 players after everything is done.
-Max of a 5 years contract
-Must have 2 contracts for every year (IE 2 players with 5 year contracts, 2 players with 4 years contracts, ect)
-Any player from the 99/00 season will be available. Players from 99 draft will be, but 00 draft will not because we will be doing that during the game.
-This will be run be me.
Things to consider: Spending a lot of your money on 1 great player can be good, but role players do matter. Min players can also be very valuable, and cap space at the end can net you good bench players.
Trading:
During the trading, you can go between say 8-12 players, to allow for trading and getting salaries to match. The cap should be at something like 5M more than what we could spend on getting on first players. So if we get 60M to start with the auction, the soft cap will be at 65M (With some small increase, maybe 2M per year?). That allows for a little give, and allows people who want to be a big player in FA, to be so. Trading will be normal 125% rule, as in the CBA.
Details: (Can be changed)
-125% + 100,000 rule
-Mins count for outgoing and incoming
-Multi-Team trades are allowed
-Vetoing will be easy, because we want fair trades, something like 5 vetoes = a canceled trade
Things to consider: My guess is that there won't be a ton of trading. So if you don't make a trade during a year, that's not so bad.
Draft:
1 round of drafting, each rookie comes in at 2M. Only 15 picks (or however many GMs we get), so even in some weak drafts, the top talent will be taken. I don't think we can do the traditional 4 years, then QO, because then lots of draft picks will never be in FA. So I say something like 2 years at 2M per, then a QO, with a max of 3 years or so there. This way, you get 5 years out of your rookie, and maybe longer if you can keep him.
Draft should only take one day, with 15 active GMs, and lists given.
Details: (Can be changed)
-Each year, there will be a 15 pick (or however many teams we have) draft.
-Each team start the overall game with 10 picks, one for each draft.
-Rankings will determine draft order.
-No lottery, so if your the worst team, u get the 1st pick.
-Every rookie is signed to a 2 year deal worth 2M per. After that 2 years, they are a RFA that can only sign for a max of 3 years.
-Can trade back-to-back picks.
-Lists are very, very welcome for draft picks.
Things to consider: Trading future draft picks is risky. You only have 1 per year, so if you decide to tank, you better have your pick.
FA:
Run like any normal GMAT FA. A day or 2 for all FAs, with a small MLE around 3M or so. Where the FAs go is based on contract and team they are going to.
Details: (Can be changed)
-There will be a total of 10 FAs (00-09) for the 10 years this game will last.
-No raises.
-Any expiring player will be in the FA pool (IE for 2000, any player who signed a 1 year deal from the contract draft will be in the FA pool)
-Bird rights are valid for any contract 3 years or longer, but don't add any value to offering deals like in RL (In RL, teams with BR can sign players to longer deals with more increases, not the case here. Everyone is on an equal playing field, only thing it helps with is that you can go over the cap to sign this player)
-MLE will be 3M per year, for a max of 3 years
-No BAE
-Min will be at $500,000, and you can go over the cap to sign mins, max of 2 years long.
-Rosters must always be between 8-12 players when season is going on.
-Max offer is 18M per for players with 5+ years of experience, 12M for 4- years of experience, even if they were signed more in the auction draft.
-Waived players count against cap.
-Draft will take out 15 best players, so the next 15 best (based on WS) will go into the FA pool as UFAs.
-Every other player in the league that hasn't been chosen in the auction will be a UFA, however, the commish will only list the top 50 FAs in the thread (based on WS). If you want to look deeper, then you can.
-Unlike the auction draft, you can sign players to any length contract up to 5 years.
-Rookies are drafted at 2M per, for 2 years for any and all picks. They are a RFA after 2 years, where the max year contract will be 3 years, then they will be UFAs, but the team that drafted will have BRs.
-Cap will start at 60M, and increase every year by 2M
-So totally, the FA pool will be made up of:
____-Undrafted players from that years draft, that are the #16-30 in terms of WS
____-Any exp contract
____-Any other player that isn't on a team
____-Rookies from 2 years ago as RFAs
Things to consider: Lots of the main guys were loyal to teams in RL, and most will stay loyal if offered the right deal. However, if you set up the right team, and get a guy with a different personality, he might go to a new team.
Rankings:
Every 'year' on the final day, everyone ranks everyone elses team based purely on talent. Maybe have a small writeup, but nothing more than a paragraph, if anything. 1st place gets x amount of points, 2nd gets a little less, 3rd gets a little less, and so on. It would pay off to rebuild because you could win a title in later years.
At the end of the game, we count all points and determine winner.
Details: (Can be changed)
-After each week of trading, all GMs will rank all other teams.
-Will be divided into East and West (determined by random lotto before auction draft), and overall rankings will be divided by conference (IE even if the 2 most highly rated teams are from the west, the top team will get top points. Then the top team from the east (who lost in finals) will get 2nd points. Then the 2nd in the west will get third and so on. So even though the 2nd best team in the west was better than the best team in the east, because of conferences, they get less points)
-Don't have to put a writeup out.
-Writeup will be small, only to show how your team is better than other contenders.
-Low teams won't need to write writeups at all because they want higher picks, lower rankings.
-Not exactly sure on this, but:
1st (Champ) will get 15 points.
2nd (Lost in Finals) will get 13 points.
3rd (Best of losers of CF) will get 12 points.
4th (Worst of losers of CF) will get 11 points.
5th will get 10 points.
6th will get 9 points.
7th will get 8 points.
8th will get 7 points.
9th will get 6 points.
10th will get 5 points.
11th will get 4 points.
12th will get 3 points.
13th will get 2 points.
14th will get 1 points.
15th will get 0 points.
Things to consider: Tanking may be a good option to get a great player in the draft, but if its a shallow one with only one great player (IE 04, with Dwight) you may end up with a role player at a top 5 pick and still a crappy team.
Commish:
I think we could do a rotation on commish. I also think with the right people, that this would almost be self governing, and we won't need trade approvals. I was thinking either doing a commish every couple years, like 5 commishes, each taking 2 years.
Things I don't know:
If we should have a cap on years that FAs can be signed. Not sure if we should have a max years, or how much that would be.
What MLE should be.
Rookie contract situation.
I know we can't start this for a while, because a lot of the main posters are either in the normal GMAT, or in the Reject League.
I would love some feedback on this one. I love doing these smaller games, like the Keeper League, the Reject League and the Current Auction draft we did last spring, and wouldn't mind to continue to do those, I just thought this would be a fun dynasty type thing, where your trades will make a big difference. Now that I've played a few of these, I have a better feeling of what works and doesn't, so hopefully I can get some positive feedback on this, or negative that could help it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(2nd post)
A couple things I forgot to mention...
To add to the FA class, I think we might take players 16-30 in each draft (since we are drafting the top 15) and add them to FA, just so we don't have a down year there. We might add some others too, like top players that didn't make the 15 rosters, to go along with our own FAs.
We will have a total of 11 rankings. 10 for each season, and 1 at the end for the win future teams. This way not everyone will try and win in the last year and you can still get credit for getting someone like Durant or Rose in one of the last drafts.
Another fun thing about this, is that if you screw up one trade, you aren't done for the game. You just get a low draft pick, and build around him.
Something I want some feedback on, is if we should pick cities/coaches and stuff like that. I think it would be fun, but not necessary (it would still be a very fun game without all that stuff).
So, just to repeat myself again, this is just to gauge interest and see what people think. And the above list is just potential people, if your name is on, it doesn't mean you are signed up, and it doesn't mean you have to play.
Another thing I want to mention is that this game's signups are by invite only. This isn't because we only want to play with people we know, I love to meet new people, it's just that this game will most likely be about 6 months, and we need proven people to stay in it and stay active.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (NOT SIGNUPS)
Just to get everything in the same spot, here was the first comment:
And my response:
RR9 wrote:i like invite only, but BI listed a LOT of gms...and that's going to be more than 15 lol.
my problem with this game is you have so many transitions from year to year, and i think that's the messiest part of the game. given the length of the game, who's to say people stay for such a long haul? 10 years may be asking for a bit much - you should try starting out with 5 and see how that goes. then you can extend the game as you (or players) see fit.
with auction draft, will there be a max bid? like i could see people bidding 30 or 40 M just for one player (Shaq, kobe)....but if you put a max bid on it, it wouldn't make sense because multiple people could bet that amount for the same player. would we use something like a yahoo league to do the draft? if we do it on the board here, that'd be way too difficult.
And my response:
Keeslinator wrote:The invite will be on a person to person basis, that's just a general list of people he thought of as potential players. Obviously, we won't be able to contact some, some won't be interested, and some will be too busy, but that was a start.
I don't see how trades will be an issue. I wouldn't be surprised to see 10 trades a year in games like these. It's all about how you do year in, year out, not making a ton of trades to do well this year, like most GMAT games.
The whole reason for invite is to get players that will stay. The above list is proven players that have stayed with multiple GMAT games, auction games, or ATL leagues, and/or have commished them. So we will pick guys that are in for the long haul, that's why its an invite league (few if any drop outs).
5 years would sorta defeat the purpose. The whole idea here is to see how you do in a long time frame, with your star having a peak, then having to replace him. In a 5 year game, it would be sorta like current GMAT games, with lots of players trying to win now, and not very many looking towards the future, in a 10 year, you would have to, because your star won't be good after 10 years.
As for the auction draft, I have only been in one, but in that one, the people who overpaid their players didn't get good role players. If you wanna spend 35M on Kobe to get him in his prime, fine, then you won't have a great team around him because you won't have much cap. While as someone else who spends 17M per on 2 players, will have 2 solid players, instead of one star, so it works itself out.
Thanks for your feedback though, if we see more people talk about those issues, we can change them.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
Like I said, I'd be down to join, curious to see the interest level. A game of this magnitude takes a lot of planning but it could be worth while.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
I'm assuming we would do this instead of GM-A-Team, right? Or we would do them both at the same time? I'ds probably be in anyways, if i get an invite/spot.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
I'm not sure, I imagine there will be a regular GM a Team. Only 14-16 people will be taking place in this game, and only about half (what I'm predicting) will be a "regular" GM-a Team player. So I think we would probably still have it going on. We certainly don't want people to feel left out.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
i admit I don't fully understand how this would work, but I share RR9's concerns. This game is so ambitious with new seasons / rankings / free agency bidding / resource checking, etc that it would be an administrative nightmare. Since I would not be the commissioner, it would not be a huge issue for me, but I pitty the guy who does undertake that position.
Along that line - One of the biggest problems in every game is that many GMs do not maintain their rosters. With players coming from every where in this game, you cant even back track to find players. This game requires that rosters be update a lot more than the standard games and regardless of the intentions, many of the players will not update.
I made the point going into the current 02-03 game that many of the GMs are not old enough to know the personnel in the eariy years. I still believe that is the case and know several GMs in the current game have admitted not really knowing the personnel. (Your invitation method might get around this).
I don't think you can ask the entire group to write up and rank 10 time in the course of a game. There is always attritian - even in a 1 season game with GMs not willing to either Rank or Write up. I will admit - it is the least favorite part of every game in my personal opinion.
Even If you found the proper group of GM who would do all the housekeeping needed to keep this game going, people are not going to stay involved over a 10 year - 10 draft / free agent write up game spread over 7 months. Lives change and the game asks for too much time.
One of the problems I have in the current game is that we know how guys careers play out. You can rule that injuries did not occur, but we know they did and it diminishes the value of the trades.
I might like to participate, but this game looks like a nightmare.
I think you (and I) had proposed a contraction game that would be much more manageable.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
Interesting points, I think some of them are legit concerns, but I'd like to address some others.
As I've played multiple games on the T&T Games thread, I've noticed that the worst part and part that we see the most people drop out is in the writeups. This is why I am not doing those. If you see my post
A small writeup, if anything. My point here is that the rankings will be on talent alone, so people will not have to explain how they took a bad team and made it good, or how they look for the future, the only thing they might write is how to matchup with another top team if they were a contender. The future built teams will have their value when they compete for the title in future years.
So it's not like everyone will be writing 11 writeups, most people will only write a few small ones, addressing how they will beat their opponents when they are contenders. Non-contenders will be looking for high draft picks, so they won't need to write anything.
I also wonder why you think this will be such an admin nightmare. I mean, the GMs we will be inviting have all played many GMaT games or have commished them, or both. People will be more responsible than some of these guys we get for GMaT who just come in for one game, aren't active, then leave.
Rosters may be an issue, however, most people (like me) always update their rotations right after trades. Finding the salaries may be some extra work, but they will either be in the FA thread, or the auction draft thread, so it won't be as much work as going to Sham or USA Today. If you look at the people that have posted, all are good about updating rosters (BI, Blazer, MJallday), and others that I have received some positive feedback from are also good at updating rosters (Riot, Luke, Bryant) so I don't see how that issue will affect this game as much as the other GMaT.
You mentioned something about not knowing people in earlier years, and you also mentioned that the invite only will get around this. I think this is true, and that we won't have an issue with not knowing players.
The long time frame is a good point that you made, that is also my concern. Lives do change, and things come up. However, I think if we shorten the time frame, or stack the teams with a contraction draft, it will limit the game, and hurt the whole overall concept of building a dynasty. I also think that we should be able to be flexible, and have an alternate or 2 waiting in case of something like this. With only 14-16 GMs, I'm guessing there will be a few posters who would like to join in case of a drop out. And if we get too many drop outs, we will just cancel the game (something I hope not to do...) because this is just a game, people shouldn't feel like they have to take time to do it if they don't have to time/don't want to.
Injuries is another good point you made. That will have to be something that we need to work out as a whole group, whether to use the small number of games that they played, or use them as injured.
So all in all, I think you made some good points, but I address some of them. I also think some of your issues with the game can be easily fixed, or weren't as big of a problem in my mind as in yours. Thanks for your input though.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
"To add to the FA class, I think we might take players 16-30 in each draft (since we are drafting the top 15) and add them to FA, just so we don't have a down year there. We might add some others too, like top players that didn't make the 15 rosters, to go along with our own FAs."
Kees - Free agency is alway an area of contention with GMs upset about how players are awarded and here you have even less defined pool of RFA and UFA. That should be clearly defined and is confusing - Lots of work for commissioners.
The other issue that I would address is all these decisions by consensus. I would not participate with all the issues being determined by "everyone". It's a game - you should select your 2 other co commissioners and make the decisions. It is just too cumbersome and I would prefer the efficiency - which will end up with the same results 95% of the time. You cannot please all the people . . .
Tracking money, determining FA pool. MLE, TPE (levels), auto-picking, etc are going to be difficult in the absence of a genuine reference, but if you are willing to undertake it - the game might be fun. Still would find a way to shorten it (maybe double up between seasons - IE 2 round draft from 01-02 combine and combine those years FA / the 03-04 / 05-06 etc. That will reduce it to 5 rounds and still cover all the players.
Finally, and I would recommend this for every game - All Trades are automatically approved. All GMs have the obligation to report a trade that is not in compliance for any reason (ie - puts the other team over Hard cap, does not work in the 125 rule - whatever might be the issue). 900% of trades get approved and GMs know they are good going in, so why hang up the game on approval. The 2 person co commissioners should be the only ones to void a trade. People make deals with plans in mind and even in a lopsided move, most times it should be allowed.
Just more thoughts after your reply.
Still think it is way too complicated and ambitious and will not be a co commissioner.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
I don't think, that this would be too difficult, it would be like 10 or 11 small GM-a-Team games, that are connected with each other. I wouldn't be a commisioner or co-commisioner though, because of lack of time, f*cked up time zones etc.. Something has been said about some people losing interest/having not enough time and dropping out, but alternates list could be open, so it wouldn't be much of a problem.
Blazer50 made a great point about all trades being approved automatically and only few guys (co-commisioners) being able to veto it, in case that trade is against the rules (125%, cap situation etc). Vetoing the trade only because someone is being "robbed", makes no sense, since GM agrees to make that trade himself. Why can't i get Kobe for Scalabrine, if Lakers GM agreed to it and i have enough money to do that?

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
I agree with Blazer on the trade approval thing, trades will be automatically approved, so that the commish has less to do, which is good.
I also talked to Blazer on AIM about the details of this game. What I'm going to do is put out the details of FA, Draft, ect, that I think are good, then let other people propose to edit them if they want. This way we have a set of rules, that just maybe need editing, instead of asking people to help start from scratch.
So here's my ideas on the details for a few things, I'll also copy this to the OP.
Auction Draft:
FA:
Draft:
Trades:
-125% + 100,000 rule
-Mins count for outgoing and incoming
-Multi-Team trades are allowed
-Vetoing will be easy, because we want fair trades, something like 5 vetoes = a canceled trade
Things to consider: My guess is that there won't be a ton of trading. So if you don't make a trade during a year, that's not so bad.
Writeups/Rankings:
Commish:
-I will run the auction draft and 1st 2 years (00 and 01)
-I will need 4 other commishes, each that can do it for about a month (2 years in game time)
-Just need to collect lists for Draft, run FA and average out the rankings. Not too hard.
I'll add more later, I have to study now lol. Hope this gives a better idea to some people.
I also talked to Blazer on AIM about the details of this game. Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
I was talking to r0c today, and he told me to suggest a point system for keeping up rosters. Something like 1 point every 2 years, just to keep your roster up. Everyone should get it, and it keeps people in check.

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
I like the idea of points relating to updated rosters. Although, I think a deduction of points for those who fail to update might be better than rewarding points to all who do. I could be wrong there, just my opinion.
What happens to teams who blow their wad on superstars in the auction (which always happens in my fantasy leagues) and have no money to fill out their roster?

Yeah that is a better idea. Same purpose, just a different way of doing it.

Cap holds, my friend. You need to have 10 players at the end of the auction, and each has a min of 500,000. So you could spend a max of 50.5M for 1 player, leaving 9 players at the min for the rest (50.5 + (0.5 * 9) = 60 which is the cap), if you wanted to. I don't recommend it though

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
I don't have much to add, only that I feel this is too ambitious - it may well work but I'm going to hold off giving any commitment right now and I don't want to be in a position where 2 or 3 seasons down the line I have to step back.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Deductions is actually what I mentioned when I was talking with Kees as it gets the point across to those not updating.

the crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe

^My bad, either way, the same point gets across, update your roster! Lol
Anyone want to comment on any of the other details? I'm getting excited for this game

Re: Multi-Year GM Idea (Not Signups)
Ok, a few things. First, I don't like me old idea of bidding, where the per year is all that matters (9M per for 2 years is worse than 10M for 1). So total money makes more sense, so 8M per for 3 years will beat 10M per for 2.

25.8 PPG , 6.6 RPG and 5.2 APG in the game starting year of '99/'00 doesn't warrant being Tier 1?
