- Pippen on Penny, Rose on Richmond, Bowen on Barry, Bird on Lucas and Reed on Shaq
- Without Dumars TMac’s team is overrated in terms of spacing. The only real threat from 3pt line is Richmond. Penny in a season chosen by TMac (he send me PM with years, thx) shot only 31% from 3pts (and is 32% career 3P; overall he was as good/bad ;] shooter as LeBron, even their FT% is similar – in fact ’96 Penny is worse both: 3P and FT shooter than James) and it was during season with
shortened line. Wise, Lever and Barry obviously didn’t have 3pt range - in his best ABA season Barry shot 31% with only 73 3PM; Wise never attempted more than 18 3pt shots in a season… so I don’t think argument “if only he has 3pt line during his time he would shot great” would work here. Despite I think we can’t play “what if” card here, because for example Barry was chosen relatively low because of lack of 3pt range – in other words: if we would treat Barry as 3pt shooter, he would be chosen sooner in our draft. Of course mid range game is also important to some extent, but 3P range is the most important thing in spacing. Also, mid range jumpers are the less effective shots.
- On the other hand my team have several players with 3pts range: Pippen, Rose or Horry are better 3P shooters than Penny ; Bowen and Laimbeer are very good; Hornacek and Bird are better than Richmond. So I think my teams spacing is definitely better.
- I had middle pick in our draft, so I know I wouldn’t have chance to chose one of these great centers like Shaq. So to have any chance against teams with GOAT center I decided to built team great defensively on the perimeter and with strong centers, who at least would make GOAT centers earn their points. I also wanted centers with range, because I want these great centers like Hakeem or KAJ to stay as much away from basket, as possible. That’s why I picked Reed (he had decent midrange jumper and was strong enough to effectively fight with the best centers of his generation – remember, in 1970 he was chosen to All D 1st Team over KAJ, Wilt or Thurmond), Laimbeer (great range, one of the smartest and the most annoying big defenders ever) and Chandler (no range, but excellent defender).
- So on offense I want to have Reed or Laimbeer (Chandler would only play if others Cs have foul trouble) away from the basket, Reed on midrange, Laimbeer behind three point line. Shaq can’t defend anyone else on my team, so he would have to step up to Reed/Laimbeer and paint would be unprotected, because Lucas was really poor defender (Buck Williams was much better, but he’s not in TMac’s S5 and I would talk about him later). So paint would be open to Rose’s, Bird’s, Pippen’s or Connie’s attacks.
- My primary offensive play would be pick and roll. I would attack Shaq as much as possible, because he always was bad p&r defender. Reed and Laimbeer with their shooting ability are obviously very good bigs to p&r or pick and pop. With the ball would be Rose or Pippen – no one from TMac’s S5 was very good perimeter defender (Wise was great, but his on the bench), Barry was smart team defender, but not too good individual, so I would attack Penny, Richmond or Barry (one of them would defend Bowen, I don’t know who, but obviously I wouldn’t play p&r with Bowen) and Shaq on p&r very often. That would be deadly weapon here
- I mentioned Bowen, so I elaborate on him. On offense his role is just like during his years in San Antonio – corner three (and he was excellent at that) if he is leave open. On defense (in selected season he was 2nd in DPOY voting) his task is to shut down Barry or sometimes Richmond if he gets too hot. I want him to close Barry completely, take away passes to Barry, chase him through screens, contest every shot, be like his shadow, what should annoy Barry.
- Of course my main offensive weapon is Bird. Lucas is supposed to guard him, so as long as Lucas – very poor defender – is on the floor I simply give ball to Bird and allow him to create – he was great scorer and creator so something good would happen to my team. When Lucas is on the bench and Buck Williams is on I would use more p&r and attack Shaq, but Bird still would get his touches.
- On defense I’m fine with Larry on Lucas or Williams. Buck was very efficient, but not too offensive skilled (weak FT shooter – 62.5%), most of his points he scored from the paint, put backs, offensive rebounds, and so on. Bird is too smart to allow many such easy basket and he often guarded opposing teams PFs as McHale was guarding quicker small forwards. Lucas is better offensively, but not too dangerous from inside, he likes to shot long range jumpers, but wasn’t too quick, so I don’t think Bird would have many problems with him.
- I have very good, athletic perimeter players and defenders so I think that would create many transition offense opportunities. Non of TMac’s starters is know from his defense, so my fast break offense would be lethal here.
- Shaq. Yeah, that’s problem. I would double him only with players who guard Buck or Wise (both not threats from midrange), so with Pippen, Bowen and Bird – all smart and excellent team defenders. If double teaming isn’t possible Reed, Laimbeer or Tyson have to make Shaq work. I hope officiating would be fair in this game, so Shaq would be called for his offensive fouls ;] Laimbeer was great at drawing charges. Overall I know Shaq would score his points, but he can’t won alone. And I want to limit other TMac’s options and of course destroy him on offense as he have bad defenders to stop my team (p&r, Lucas on Bird).
- Rose on Richmond maybe seems as strange move, but Rose is strong enough to held on his own. According to synergysports Rose ranks 29 overall on defense (0.78 ppp), that’s very good result. What’s also important here is how good he is in defending the post up – ranks 7th in the NBA, however sample is very small (only 40 plays). Besides, I want you to play through Richmond as he is your the worst offensive player (in S5). So if you want postup Richmond against Rose I’m fine with that, because that means less ball in hands of Penny, Shaq and Barry.
- Pippen on Penny, because after very good game 1 in 1996 (15/21FG) Pippen shut down Penny: 6/15, 8/24 and 9/21 FG.
- Penny, Richmond, Wise and Barry to some extent – all of them need ball to be effective. And I don’t think Richmond was as good catch and shot shooter as he was when he could create for his own and keep in mind than under pressure he was significantly worse in playoffs (Lever also terrible in playoffs). Wise was very tournover prone – 3.4 tov with 3.4 apg.
- Also keep in mind that Barry is like LeBron in one aspect – he needs proper role players to be great. That’s why all work in GSW 1975. But with other stars on team he wouldn’t be so good. Besides I think chemistry problems would be issues here: Barry, Penny ’96 and Shaq ’00… that wouldn’t work so great as TMac would want to. So overall Barry would be less valuable here, because his usage would be lower, so his main strength - scoring is gone to some extent (besides he was inefficient scorer: 51TS%!). Sure, he was great as playmaker, but he needs ball to do so, and here is Penny who is better at that.
- I don’t have Rodman this round, but my team is still very good at boards, as good as TMac’s and that's why "resting" Rodman this round shouldn't hurt me much.

Numbers for Lucas and Reed are unknown, but I don’t think there’s much difference between them. So in S5 frontcourt TMac has advantage, but I have advantage on backcourt and in fact the worst rebounder of all players is on TMac’s team – Richmond. Benches are comparable, ABA numbers are inflated by lack of good big rebounders in ABA and Laimbeer’s or Horry numbers are lowered by competition on their own team.
summary- offense: through Bird if Lucas is on the floor and p&r attacking Shaq as much as possible + fast break offense because TMac’s team don’t have great defenders (in S5, but Buck and Wise from the bench is too small). Reed and Laimbeer take Shaq away from the basket, so paint is open and Rose, Pippen, Coonie or even Horry and Bird are free to attack the rim.
- defense: shut down perimeter players, create transition opportunities, play passing lanes so entry pass to Shaq wouldn’t be so easy (Pippen or Horry with long arms are perfect to that task). No easy baskets for Shaq, if necessary foul him and let him shot FTs, I have three centers, so many fouls available. Reed and Laimbeer have to made Shaq work for his points, play smart, fundamental defense.
