GMAT: March Madness Edition: ROSTER PAGE
roster updates are needed and trades will not be approved if this is not updated on a regular basis, if you will be out of contact, please post so people don't think you left the game.
PLEASE respond to all offers, even if they are poor, a simple "No" is all you need to say
If teams go MIA without saying they are no around, or if roster goes a few days post trade without being updated, that team will be replaced, either with a new GM, an existing GM taking a 2nd team, or the league "myself" taking over
We will be using the new CBA for all trade rules and contracts, if something is proven to be agaist the CBA it will be voided
Timeline:
Still not set in stone, but this is what I'm thinking. We will start as soon as we have enough people to start, so I won't post a finite start date.
March 13 - Trade deadline is midnight EST
March 15 - all final 2012 rosters need to be updated and ranking for draft order will be done (someone else will handle this since I will be out of contact)
March 17 - draft lottery will be held (someone else will handle this since I will be out of contact)
March 18 - draft will start, and trading will open using 2013 salaries(someone else will handle this since I will be out of contact)
March 21 - all 2013 team options and player options will have to be decided on
March 22 - you can send in FA offers
March 24 - Tier 1 FAs will sign
March 25 till March 29 – rest of FA
April 3 – start of reg season, all teams must be within roster limits, draft picks need to be signed or they are in Europe for the season
April 13 - Trade deadline is midnight EST
April 15- final rosters/writeup needs to be done
April 16- April 17 rankings need to be sent in (if you don’t send in a complete ranking, you will not be allowed to play next game)
April 20 – winners announced
Salary Cap:
60M - Soft Cap
75M - Lux Tax
90M - Hard Cap
Amnesty:
Amnesty will only be able to be used during the draft. Any team that has not used it in NBA this year is eligible to use it during this time. Teams can only use it on players that had a contract when the CBA was signed, and has not been traded. The Amnesty completely takes the players contract off of your salary cap.
Trading:
Approvals will be approved, and posted in an “Approved Trades Thread”, almost all legal trades will be approved.
Trading picks:
Unlike the NBA we allow picks to be traded in back to back years. If you place protection on the pick, the full protection MUST be listed, or it will be unprotected the following season.
You can only trade picks in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 for this game
Under Lux Tax:
Teams can acquire up to the lesser of 150 percent plus $100,000, or 100 percent plus $5 million of the salaries they trade away.
Over Lux Tax:
Teams can acquire no more than 125 percent plus $100,000 of the salaries they trade away.
Special Cases:
Real life extensions and options are used for this game (ex: CP decining FA, Love, Westbrook and others signing extensions)
Also real life rookie scale team options that were picked up/declined are also in effect
Kenyon Martin – signed with Clippers
Wilson Chandler, JR Smith, Aaron Brooks, Patty Mills - Overseas, no Bird Rights, UFA in 2012
Jeff Green – will be a UFA in 2012, but Boston has his Bird Rights, can only be traded as a S&T in free Agency since he is not under contract
any NBA transaction (signing/waiving) dated before 2/12 will be official in this game
Buyouts/Trading Money:
This was cool, and will stay
IT MUST BE LISTED ON YOUR ROSTER PAGE, OR WE WILL ASSUME YOU HAVE NONE AT ALL TO USE (even star up cash)
Each team can trade cash as part of trades. There are limits:
Every team starts with 7M
Max amount of cash you can get/trade in one deal: 3M
You can never be a negative
All buyouts must be cleared with me. You can buy a player out by requesting one (send me an email) and using your cash to pay the player now, and have him come off the salary cap. Since this money gets taken off payroll (unlike real life) you gotta pay a little extra to buy out the guy. We will only use round numbers (by the mil) If the player makes 2,300,000, you need to pay him $3mil to buy him out. Min contracts will cost you $1mil to erase. If the player has a buyout or partial guarantee, you need to pay the ENTIRE salary to clear the partial money, or just waive the player and take the smaller cap hit
Money, if part of a trade, does not count for incoming/outgoing, it is separate.
People can find salaries at http://www.shamsports.com (this is the official site)
Also look at http://www.nba.com for rosters, or http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries.htm for the blanks. Also http://www.sportscity.com/NBA-Salaries/ has some. Or just email me for help lol.
Trading Free Agents
Tier 1 FAs (Dwight and DWill) will not be able to be traded if they sign with a new team, if they resign with the team that had them at end of 2012 season, they will be allowed to be traded 7 days after signing is posted. If they “jump ship” and choose a better situation, they stay with that team the rest of the game.
RFAs: most have signed extensions in real life which will be used in this game, teams that have a RFA will be allowed to extend them prior to FA, but some may decide to test the market since the payday will be available in this type of game.
RFA Offer Sheets need to be matched or a S&T worked out between only those 2 teams within 12 hours of the offer sheet being posted
If the RFA signs an offer sheet, and it gets matched, that player can not be traded for 7 days after “offer matched” is posted. If the player is not matched, he still can not be traded for 7 days from the offer sheet being posted
Resigning your own RFA would make him allowed to be traded at any time
More rules may still come

Indiana Pacers

Direction: To be a successful team not just now but in the future. A little vague as it doesn't fall under the typical 'win now' or 'rebuild' GMAT ethos, but I like to play realistically according to the franchise. Indiana has always been a team that has developed young players in amongst successful cores, and needs to win games to get fans coming back...

As per my objectives above, my goal was to make Indiana a better team now and for the foreseeable future. I'm pretty confident I achieved that, and in my own style (without just trading for assets, and keeping my core in tact). There were a lot of tempting offers along the way, including trading for Carmelo amongst others, but I never quite felt I could add that star player without sacrificing the majority of my roster.
Winning now
I ended the 2011/12 season with Nash/George/Granger/Garnett/Hibbert, good enough for the top 4 in the league. IMO it was one of the strongest, considering the depth on the bench, and I went into the following season trying to improve. Unfortunately I didn't quite get where I wanted to be, so I began to look more towards the future.
Winning in the future
Roy Hibbert, top 5 Center and showing excellent year on year progression, alongside Paul George - supremely long, athletic guard-forward, were the key parts of the initial team. To that core, I've added John Wall, who I'm exceptionally high on, and whom has made massive leaps this season:

Beyond that, Gerald Henderson - an excellent mid-range scorer, improving defender, who has shown flashes of great potential capped by a 29ppg performance just last night (13-19); Nikola Mirotic - who has drawn comparisons to Dirk Nowitzki and whom ESPN amongst others feel he would be a top 5 pick had he not been committed to Real Madrid for at least another year. For what it's worth, he's supremely efficient from all areas of the court and has been monthly MVP for one of Europe's best teams (Real Madrid).
It doesn't stop there either, Gary Neal has been a solid shooter for SAS and replaces the departed George Hill; and Kevin Seraphin, who has averaged 8.4 rebounds (71%), 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks since upping his minutes to 20 per game for March. He's built like a more athletic/taller Chuck Hayes.
Most importantly, I've surrounded these young players with really hard working, high character guys, who will ensure they are well mentored and benefit from playoff experience early in their career. Garnett, Battier, Zaza Pachulia, Jameer Nelson and Anthony Parker are all consummate professionals and part of the reason why this team is incredibly deep and talented.
Progression
Effectively, I upgraded point guard massively, and made substantial improvements at PF and C, particularly in terms of depth, without sacrificing the future.
Flexibility
I've got at least $10m cap space next season, and the $63m payroll is very much affordable for Indiana. I've got no negative assets on the books - the team is very much built with the future in mind and I've got plenty of assets available.
