vi) Concluding remarksi) IntroductionLets start with
Houston's old roster:
Lowry/Dragic/Flynn
Martin/Lee/
Parsons/Buginger/Terrence Williams
Scola/Patterson/ Adrien
Dalembert/Hill/ThabeetA borderline playoff team, without the scorers weak defenders and on longer contracts. Enough cap space to be a serious contender in free agency, but with a glaring need at sf and not a clear route to address that. A team stuck in the middle, with a protected future first owed for Terrence Williams

. Barring signing a top notch free agent, rebuilding and pushing off the future pick might be the most logical direction. But with Martin and Scola's contracts, a liquidation sale is difficult.
What did Houston do? We did 2 entirely separate things.
First we put together a playoff team for 2012, trying to create a defensive force capable of winning at least a round, while not mortgaging the future and still staying below the luxury tax. Then following the 2012 season, we (sold the next season worth of tickets) burned it to the ground and set the basis for a future dynasty to emerge.
ii) 2012 teamWhile injuries might have effected our playoff seeding, we suceded in our goal of fielding a
playoff lineup of:
Lowry/Augustin / I. Thomas /AJ Price
Rip/ C. Lee / D. Jones
Pierce/ LMAM / Budinger
Vaerajo/Patterson /
Dalembert/Jason Thompson / BattieThat lineup has the needed go to scorer and first option in Pierce, more so one who is a complete player on both sides of the court. The ability to to play Varejao both as a backup center and as a pf paired with Dalembert when facing the bigger teams (Lakers with Gasol + Bynum, Memphis with (Zach + Gasol) was an essential move, and created a front court capable of shutting down and making those teams work. Jason Thompson and Patrick Paterson form a four man rotation with just about any combo of the 4 working and leaving us a top 5 defensive team easily. Moving from Martin to Rip isn't much of a downgrade considering Pierce can pick up the scoring load, and completes the shift to a defensive team. Augustin off the bench just adds more scoring punch. With these additions, the team was better set to play and advance in the playoffs, and furthermore maintained if not added future assets. Given Lowry and Varejao were close to all star level, and Pierce was an all star, we had a lineup that could compete with anyone and possibly surprise a less complimentary favorite in a deep round.
Following a (disappointing to us) regular season record, Houston tweaked the lineup in free agency, letting Augustin go when the price was too high, resigning Lee and Thompson, adding Drago (for 6 million less then Augustin), and then making the tough decision to swap Dalembert for Humphries and field a smaller Humphries/Varejao frontcourt. At this point we had successfully managed to presale all season tickets, and we made the decision that it was time for direction 2.
We burnt it to the ground. Then we took the ashes, put them in a boat, sailed it across the sea, and sank it. So what exactly can you get when tearing everything down?
iii) 2013 team3 first rounders, including the second pick in the 2012 draft (Barnes, Le'bryan Nash, Fournier). Keep in mind that we didn't even have our first rounder. Also, 3 second rounders in the 2012 draft, including a center projected by Dx as a first rounder next year (Buford, Withey, Radosevic -- left in Europe). WIth Barnes an elite level prospect and Nash having similar top line potetial, we felt we were adding some of the players needed to fully turn our team around in a rebuild.
Which maybe could be a pretty impressive haul (I have a hard time seeing a team giving a top 5 pick for Martin and Scola), but actually is just the tip of the iceberg. In addition, we added three 2011 first rounders (Vesely, Vucevic, Joseph), and 2 of the most impressive 2nd rounders from '11 (Isaiah Thomas and Jon Leuer). Just how good are the players from the '11 class we added? Oh, we didn't go for quanity, we added according to David Thorpe's redraft (
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story/_/ ... ch-redraft) the ranked #9 Vucevic-- a true 7 footer, #14 Vesely, and #17 Thomas. Oh, and we got to add to our roster #20 Motiejunas. In his regular rankings, Isaiah Thomas is currently the 5th best rookie, Vucevic is 13th and Leuer is 19th (
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/ ... gs/_/set/1) And this might still be underselling Thomas, NBA.com lists him as
2nd on their rookie ladder
http://www.nba.com/rookie-ladder/ . Together this gives us 6 players in their first season (Barnes, Nash, Fournier, Buford, Withey, and Montiejunas), and another 5 in their second year (Thomas, Joseph, Vesely, Leuer, Vucevic). Paterson was our holdover and as a 3rd year player in the 2013 season will be the veteran presence.
2013 Depth Chart:Point Guard Isaiah Thomas / Cory Joseph
Shooting Guard Le'bryan Nash / Evan Fournier / Bufford
Small Forward Harrison Barnes / Jan Vesely / Gerald Green / Outlaw
Power Forward Patrick Patterson / Donatas Motiejunas / Jon Leuer
Center Nikola Vucevic / Glen Davis / Jeff Withey
The remaining players rounding out the depth chart are Glen Davis, Outlaw, and
Having fully discussed Green, I will add that while neither Big Baby nor Outlaw are great bargains for what they bring, the amount of salary flexibility the team has is still tremendous, as seen below. Furthermore, Glen Davis will be able to help fill the center rotation and eat minutes for the '13 season until the team drafts its center of the future, to ideally slide Vucevic to the backup position. Playing Davis with the starting rotation besides at the start of games will enable us to have an almost all European line of: __ /Fournier/Vesely/Motiejunas/Vucevic
Which might be enough for a great rebuild by itself, but then there is the issue of draft picks --
5 firsts in 2013, 3 in 2014 and 3 more in 2015. We are in a position to get a top 5 pick next year, and with enough assets to consolidate and get at least 2 more top prospects. Oh, and along the way we managed to get a smattering of 2nds in case we ever wanted to start our own European team.
iv) SalariesTotal salaries are listed below for each year, with team options in blue and QO in red.

The team has over 5.5 million in immediate cap space, and before any 2013 draft picks over 20 million in cap space. Furthermore, in the course of trading players, 3 TPE's greater then available cap space were acquired, ranging from 6.25 to 9.3 million, listed directly below. These are being retained, and enable the team to strongly consider taking a large (short) unproductive salary attached to enough of an asset. By having all our players of note under rookie contracts for another 3 if not 4 full years, we have amassed a war chest of cap space and kept expenses low.
TPE'sTPE 1: $9,300,000 (From Augustin)
TPE 2: 6,250,000 (From C.Lee for unsigned Fourier)
TPE 3: 8,400,000 (From Hump for picks)
In addition, we retained some of our cash, which otherwise could have reduced 2013 salaries further. The cash will most likely be pocketed by a thankful ownership group, but if an attractive deal arrives we can include the maximum cash, or shorten Outlaw's contract by a year.
Cash: 3 million
v) Draft Picks:While we are proud of our young talent already on the roster, Houston's team has an equal stockpile pof talent waiting to join the team. Due to the sheer magnitude of quality prospects on the roster already, and then number of picks in upcoming drafts, it is expected that some consolidation will occur around the time of the 2013 draft, with the possibility of trading 2-3 mid-late firsts for an early pick. The 11 first round picks in the next 3 drafts are listed in bold, with the second rounders in plain font. Worth special note is that only the Sac pick and the Chicago pick have any protection, and of these the Chicago pick would turn into beer if it is not top 8.
2013 own first round pick -- Houston
2013 first round draft pick from Charlotte
2013 first round draft pick from LAL
2013 first round draft pick from Toronto
2013 first round draft pick from Sac (top 13 prot)2013 second round pick from Detroit
2013 own second round pick -- Houston (if top 40)
2014 own first round pick -- Houston
2014 first round draft pick from Chicago (Top 8 protected) *** Turns into Beer ***
2014 first round draft pick from Portland2014 second round draft pick from NOH
2014 second round pick from Minn
2015 own first round pick -- Houston
2015 first round draft pick Miami
2015 first round draft pick Charlotte2015 own second round pick -- Houston (if 2013 or 2014 conveyed or if top 40)
2015 second round draft pick from Atlanta (top 58 protected)
2015 second rond pick from LAC (only if 51-55)
Conservatively, we believe we could slot in a top 5 pick at C and 2 lottery picks if not top 10 picks at pg and pf in the '13 draft. This would be expect to leave us somewhere between 12 and 15 million cap space still, and room to offer one of several restricted free agents a sizable contract, or barring that to trade Glen Davis for a much large expiring contract. Even after the '13 draft we expect to have an overabundance of draft picks, which is the type of problem any GM wishes to have. FInally, it is added that we retan the rights to Leon Radosevic and have the possibility of resigning AJ Price who went to Europe after rejecting our Q/O and receiving no offers of merit.
Unsigned Rights:Leon Radosevic ('12 2nd rounder)
AJ Price (restricted free agent, enjoying Europe)
vi) ConclusionAfter making the playoffs in 2012, Houston has undertaken a complete roster overhaul, which should make for an extremely rapid bottoming and bounce back, hopefully reminiscent of SAS without Duncan, only having acquired a core to rival OKC's in that single year. We have solid youth prospects at every position, possible franchise players, and have done a better job on cornering the '13 draft then Murphy and Aykroyd did the OJ futures market.

I could say more, but really, you should be watching the last youtube clip and realizing that Houston aced this, creating a future dynasty all managing to successfully bring our team both ways -- who else did that?
