I like the short timeframe. I'll only be able to do the first version of the game :/ but its a great idea. A few questions...

For the rookie drafts (not contraction), are we doing 24 first round picks then 24 second for both 2012 and 2013? In GMaT, we are gonna do just 1st round picks for 2013 draft since a lot of the top guys are still in high school.

Do we start with a set amount of money, or is the rankings just based on what we spend? (IE one person who spends more isn't as highly ranked). Also, what's the advantage to a new coach or relocation? Does it have any advantage to the rankings?

And for the 2nd amnesty, are teams just able to take 5M off of any contract of their team for free or something? (clearing that up may be a good idea).

Can't wait for signups!

Highly doubt we will do the 2nd round of 2013 draft unless a majority really want it.

Each Owner will start with $1million, umm... $1Billion

The second amnesty will allow an owner to remove $5mil from a player's contract but only in terms of cap hit not what they will actually owe.

One thing I have not quite figured out yet is if there will be money coming back on an investment in building a stadium from your own pocket.

any suggestions on how that can be incorporated to make it more worthwhile would be greatly appreciated.

also

Team markets and relocation...

Markets should play a roll in income to a degree which in turn would give an owner a reason why they may want to spend money on relocation.

also could use some input on making that worthwhile in terms of income, etc

I like the idea of contracting teams, there really is too many teams in the league, i'd like to see more stars on less teams. Would make the league so much more competitive.

I sort of think financial and arena situations, team revenue, etc. should factor into which teams get contracted rather than just records, in the spirit of being realistic.

Sounds like a blast though, roc.

As an owner it will be your job to make your team financially stable or destroy it ala the semi recent Knicks. There are ways to earn money for your team in the game via TV contracts that come with winning, lux tax payouts, etc. So you can be in a meh market and still turn a good profit if you build the right way and pay attention to your spending.

I will leave who gets contracted in future games up to those that carry on the torch (assuming there is enough interest that is).

I figure it should change up from game to game based on criteria each new commish decides to use at that time. This should help keep things interesting for down the road as you will never know which teams will be contracted and for what reasons. :)

So I would bet that at some point a Commish will use that exact criteria to choose the 6 teams. I just felt like taking the easiest contraction path for this 1st game is all. :P

One thing I am not sure should change though is picking 3 from each conference. You could pick more from one than the other but would then have to move a team over from one conference to to the other to keep both equally balanced in numbers.

by 5th pick sucks
This may be a stupid question, but was is a contraction draft? Does that mean basically a re-draft or something?

Contraction as in it's definition: "The process of becoming smaller."

The Charlotte Bobcats, the Washington Wizards, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the New Orleans Hornets, the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors would all be eliminated as NBA franchises-- all of their players would form a "draft player pool" in which remaining teams would select from in a Contraction Draft.

Get it?

I may come out of retirement for this game, depending on when it starts, what veterans will play and what team I get. I don't think I can play unless some of the best of the best come out for this one.

Awesome!

I don't have much to add roc, looks well thought out, the only way to really know is to try it and see.

I'd maybe also add the stipulation that rules can be changed throughout the game, based on feedback - I see no reason to wait a whole game to change something if it is clearly not working.

I am trying to get a hold of some of the vets that have gone walkabout to see if I can drag em back in. Can't promise who will actually follow through though. Last time I commished we had a bunch of guys come back but that was then, so we will just have to wait and see.

I do like having new guys come into the game as well since it is always good to have new blood to carry on the torch. Last game I ran... Joeboplollipop only had 1 post and it was to sign up and RR9 had 10 posts when he signed up and both are going strong in GM a Team. It keeps things rolling and adds a fresh view, good stuff.

anyway, hope to have ya back my man as it will mos def be fun. :)

We will have to see how it goes for sure. If a rule stands out as broken it will mos def get mending ASAP (like the veto issue from last time got fixed during the game) while others that only need fine tuning will be most likely addressed at game's end.

Hopefully it will all run smoothly but we will have to play to find out, can't wait. :)

Question...

How do we make relocating and/or stadium purchases semi worth contemplating?

I am thinking that we have a % based on how nice the stadium is as well possible attendance figures which in turn would be dependent on how good a team is and the market they play in.

Nobody will own their own stadium when the game starts to make it a somewhat even playing field in that department. Prime real estate will mean the stadium will cost more to build and most likely equate to higher ticket pricing. How well the team does in terms of winning will determine how attendance figures would look. There would be certain exceptions based on RL of course where games sell out even when the on court product is not top notch.

please post any thoughts you have on the matter

thanks

Using something with the playoffs seems like a good idea. Like if a team moves to a better market, maybe they get x% more money for each playoff tier they go. Right now, I think they are:

$5mil miss playoffs
$10 mil 1st round
$20 mil 2nd round
$50 mil Conference Finals
$100 mil Finals
$250 mil Title

So maybe a relocation gives you like 50% more TV money or something? So with a new location, youd get...

$7.5mil miss playoffs
$15 mil 1st round
$30 mil 2nd round
$75 mil Conference Finals
$150 mil Finals
$375 mil Title

Or something like that. But that's not very large scale, so maybe the % needs to be changed or something.

And it also should somewhat depend on the market. Like if you moved a team to NC (college basketball) or to like Miss (college football) or like Alaska (no people) then it wouldn't be as profitable as a place like Seattle, Vegas, Anaheim, ect, who are looking for NBA teams. Im not so how to incorporate that though.

How will we decide who gets what team? (May have missed it)

This will decide if I actually play or not truthfully.

will stick with the pick 3 teams (or maybe 4?) and do a lottery with odds weighted towards 1st choices

did you have something different in mind?

can you hop on AIM bness? would like to chat if possible
