Pacific Division Draft v2 SF2 - MadNESS vs. Colbinii*

Post#1 » by Fadeaway_J » Mon May 29, 2023 11:43 pm

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do not vote in this thread until both managers have submitted their writeups. Please ensure you give a rationale for your vote; votes with no explanation will not be counted.

If writeups aren't posted within 24 hours, we will vote solely based on the players they have drafted (and any rotations they have posted on their roster page).

**First to 3 votes advances.**

Player Year FGA
Kawhi Leonard 2021 17.5
Charles Barkley 1994 16.1
Michael Cooper 1986 7.4
Pau Gasol 2009 12.9
J.J. Redick 2016 11.7
Goran Dragic 2014 14.4
Kurt Rambis 1984 3
Gary Payton II 2022 4.8

Total FGA 87.8

Rotation
PG Goran Dragic (36) Michael Cooper (12)
SG Michael Cooper (18) J.J. Redick (30)
SF Kawhi Leonard (40) Gary Payton II (8)
PF Charles Barkley (40) Gary Payton II (8)
C Pau Gasol (38) Kurt Rambis (10)

Offense

We have an extremely balanced attack offensively. All of our starting line-up average 3.5 assists or more, with everyone but Gasol in the high 4 APG or more.

We crash the glass well with the combination of Barkley/Gasol in the post but both of them are good enough playmakers/passers to generate spacing.

Kawhi and Cooper are both 39% 3P shooters while Goran and Redick are both well over 40% [J.J. is 47.5% from 3P] while gives Kawhi and Barkley full court-spacing to operate.

Defense

Gasol is a good [not great] rim protector and positions himself well. We will be in a full drop-coverage scheme as we rely on Cooper/Kawhi to lock down our opponents best perimeter options.

With this in mind, we look to excel defensively on the defensive glass with Barkley/Gasol and Rambis off the bench

Dragic > Bell
Cooper > Kobe
Kawhi > PG13
Barkley > Peja
Gasol > Dwight

Key Points
-The opponents spacing is tremendous but the playmaking is lackluster, and I feel the Barkley/Peja match-up offensively is more advantageous for us than them
-No real point guard which means the opponents offense will lack consistency in setting up and attacking our defensive deficiencies while ours will be well-suited
-Cooper on Kobe really makes life hell for him [Is there a better Kobe defender?] while Kawhi on PG locks down the other perimeter force for our opponent
-Large bench advantage with JJ being the clear cut best bench piece and none of Livingston/Bo providing spacing while GPII is a good bench defensive piece against Dudley

PG: Raja Bell (37) | Shaun Livingston (11)
SG: Kobe Bryant (40) | Shaun Livingston (8)
SF: Paul George (38) | Jared Dudley (10)
PF: Peja Stojakovic (40) | Jared Dudley (8)
Cc: Dwight Howard (36) | Bo Outlaw (12)

(2007-2008) Kobe Bryant - 20.6
(2020-2021) Paul George - 17.6
(2002-2003) Peja Stojakovic - 14.4
(2007-2008) Raja Bell - 10.0
(2012-2013) Dwight Howard - 10.7
(2016-2017) Shaun Livingston - 4.2
(2002-2003) Bo Outlaw - 3.5
(2009-2010) Jared Dudley - 6.0

Total: 87.0 | 88.0 FGA

Write up at work on the John. Here goes!

Short and sweet.

Bell on Goran
Kobe on Cooper
PG on Kawhi
Dwight on Barkley
Peja on Pau

I’m not going to let Barkley kill me. I’m more confident with just past his peak Dwight but still in his prime defend Barkley. Peja has a big enough body to body Pau, with Kobe and Bell coming with doubles.

I have 2 good defenders on his two best offensive threats.

Can Kawhi defend PG for 38 mins and be the focus on offense?

Spacing seems to be an issue for Colb, as well as lack of any run protection where Kobe and PG will attack the rim.

Spacing is not a problem for NESS.

I'm going with Colbinii here. He has very good answers to Kobe with Cooper and Kawhi, and while Peja might be a problem - he might also struggle against Pau, and the enhanced playmaking with Dragic as lead playmaker and literally all the starting five being great passers, give him the edge.

Old Kobe with had a throwback season running spread pick-and-roll with this version of Dwight. While I generally lean towards having another high-level playmaker so Kobe doesn't have take that on full-time, he certainly has the ability to do it. Also, spacing this good does help you to get away with more limited playmaking.

Both teams have excellent wing/guard defenders but I prefer even Lakers Dwight as a defensive anchor over Pau.

My feeling is that covering for a post mismatch like Peja on Pau is less damaging than an inattentive defender like Chuck having to stick to Peja. Nobody is going to be able to help Chuck out there.

I don't see Kobe as a worse playmaker than Dragic so that aspect doesn't bother me on MadNESS team. Both teams have some matchup issues in the frontcourt. I think Redick is the biggest difference maker off the bench and ultimately I'd rather just have the two superstars in Kawhi and Barkley here. Vote Colbinii.

- The lack of a PG for Ness would likely result in a high-usage, iso-heavy style from Kobe.
- Kobe and Dwight were a disaster in real life. Chances are they'd have similar chemistry issues in our fantasy game.
- I think Colb's team clicks better thanks to Kawhi's versatility.
