The One Time Draft (80s to now) - Discussion

Post#1 » by Fadeaway_J » Mon Jan 20, 2025 5:52 pm

Draft rules:

1. Subject to the rules to be set out below, players from the 1979-80 to 2023-24 seasons will be available to be drafted. You can draft players that came into the league before 1989 but the season you choose can't be before 1979-80.

2. You will be required to draft a total of 8 players. Each of your players must play a minimum of 8 minutes in your rotations.

3. Any player you select who made an All-NBA or All-Star team at any point in their career must have won exactly one NBA championship (per Basketball Reference), and/or played in exactly one NBA Finals series (must have played actual minutes in the series, just being on a finals team isn't enough).

4. Your team will be allowed a combined total of 88.0 FGA with a minimum of 3.0 FGA per player corresponding with the specific seasons indicated for each player. NOTE: You may pick a player whose actual FGA number was lower than 3.0, but you will still be charged 3.0 for that player.

5. Each player you select must have played at least 50% of regular season games in the season selected.

6. We will be doing a modified snake draft. It will go like this: ABBABABA

7. Players will get a maximum of a 2-hour window to make their selection when they are on the clock. If you still have not chosen a player by then, or if the player you have chosen is ineligible, you will be skipped. Also, if you know ahead of time that you won't be available to make your pick on the clock then please PM your selection to myself or another participant. NOTE: If you miss one pick and have failed to make it by the time your next pick comes around, you will be skipped.

8. The clock will be turned off between 12 midnight and 9 AM EDT.

9. Draft order will be completely randomized.

10. After you have made your draft selection, please quote and/or PM the person that goes after you so they will know that it is their turn and they are on the clock. You may not change your pick after it has been made, even if the next person in the order has not picked yet. Please note that the clock starts whenever the previous drafter has either made their pick or their two-hour window has expired, even if the next person is not quoted.

11. The winner of the draft will be determined by playoffs. Each matchup will have a timed poll, and the team with the most votes after 24 hours will be the winner. If the votes are tied, we will decide the matchup via AI vote.

Team Roster Page Rules:

You will be responsible for creating a roster page for your fantasy team. Here are the things that you will be required to include on your roster page:

. Players
. Rotations
. Draft selections
. The most important of all, you must show the total FGA per player on your roster AND a total sum of each players FGA to display that it is under the required 88.0 FGA

-All of the above must be completed before playoffs begin.

Just for my own clarification, all eligible players must have a Finals record of either 0-1 or 1-x (0, 1, 2, 3...), right?

In either way, just want to make sure I understand the rules correctly.

Pretty much. I worded it the way I did because you could theoretically have won a championship without playing in the finals, although I don't know of any All-Star/All-NBA players who meet that description.

Got it. And yes, glossed over that this only applies to All-Star/All-NBA guys. So as an example Lamar Odom would still be available even though he has 2 titles.

Ok

We could do a different version of this game at some point as well where they only had their top accolade once.
It's going to be a glorious day... I feel my luck could change

We've done that before, although it was a few years ago.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I think you can apply the limitation on all players. Enough eligible role players and can help mix up the role players pool

I researched the non-stars and wasn't comfortable with the number of eligible players.

I'm in bed with severe pain due to shoulder tendonitis. Nothing too serious, but the pain is unbearable to the extent I haven't slept for 2 nights in a row. Night #1 I was literally having thoughts of cutting off my arm and throwing it out the window. Started medication yesterday. The doctor told me to stay at home and rest for a week. Already feeling a lot better, but the pain will likely last for 4-5 more days or so.

It's moments like this that I truly appreciate our small community. We may be small in numbers, but we have created a fun group! Hopefully, this game will help me take my mind off the pain. Thank you all for the fun games we run together! Count me in!

Looking at Fade's list there are only a handful of guys we normally think of as first round, Batman players. I think the top will have an advantage, but we will see.
