Hubie Brown Draft CHAMPIONSHIP - flaco vs wackbone**

Post#1 » by durantbird » Fri Feb 21, 2025 2:47 pm

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do not vote in this thread until both managers have submitted their writeups. Once the writeups are posted, I will add a poll, and the team with the most votes after 24 hours will advance. EACH MANAGER SHOULD ALSO VOTE FOR THEIR OWN TEAM IN THE POLL - IF YOU FAIL TO DO THIS, YOU ARE SIMPLY GIVING AWAY A VOTE. If the votes are tied, we will decide the matchup via AI vote.

You are not required to state or explain your vote, but you are free to comment in the thread if you want to.

If writeups aren't posted within 24 hours, we will vote solely based on the players they have drafted (and any rotations they have posted on their roster page).

Giannis Antetokounmpo - 2019 - 17.3 FGA - MVP, All-NBA 1st, 2nd in DPOY, All-Defensive 1st, All-Star
Marc Gasol - 2017 - 15.7 FGA - 38.8 3P% on 3.6 att, All-Star
Sidney Moncrief - 1984 - 14.2 FGA - DPOY, All-Star, All-NBA 2nd, 8th in MVP Voting
Chauncey Billups - 2006 - 12.5 FGA - 43.3 3P% on 5.2 att, All-Star, All-Defensive 2nd, All-NBA 2nd, 5th in MVP Voting
Robert Covington - 2018 - 10.5 FGA - 36.9 3P% on 6.9 att, All-Defensive 1st
Kyle Korver - 2015 - 8.0 FGA - 49.2 3P% on 6.0 att, All-Star
Tyson Chandler - 2012 - 5.7 FGA - DPOY, All-Defensive 2nd, All-NBA 3rd
PJ Tucker - 2023 - 3.0 FGA - 39.3 3P% on 1.9 att

86.9/88 FGA

Chauncey Billups (38) / Sidney Moncrief (10)
Sidney Moncrief (28) / Kyle Korver (20)
Robert Covington (32) / Kyle Korver (16)
Giannis Antetokounmpo (38) / PJ Tucker (10)
Marc Gasol (32) / Tyson Chandler (16)

Writeup:

Helluva team as always flaco, best of luck.

Defensively we will start with Moncrief on Oscar, Billups on Jrue, Covington on Tatum, Giannis on Horford, and Marc on Reed. Tyson Chandler is another DPOY guy off the bench to guard Reed.

We have no holes defensively, and only one guy on the entire team that's not great-elite defensively. We have an elite defensive frontcourt with former DPOY Marc and "current" DPOY Chandler to make life difficult for Reed down low. DPOY Moncrief is an elite defender to have guard Oscar, with All-Def 2nd Billups taking some of the assignment as needed. All-Def 1st Covington will be the main coverage on Tatum, with All-Def 1st Giannis seeing some time on him as well. Nice thing with this matchup is both Moncrief/Billups can guard Oscar/Jrue AND both Covington/Giannis can guard Tatum/Horford, making it relatively simple to have Moncrief/Covington start on Oscar/Tatum but Billups/Giannis can switch onto them as well as needed without sacrificing matchups elsewhere.

Offensively Billups and Moncrief share primary ball-handling duties, Giannis is the focal point of the offense, Marc provides 3 point shooting and passing, Covington (and to a lesser extent Tucker) are 3&D, Korver is one of the best shooters of all time, and All-NBA 3rd Chandler provides another lob threat down low. We will make sure Gasol is always on the court with Giannis, meaning of Chandler's 16 minutes only 6 will be with Giannis. Billups, Covington, Gasol, and Korver all space the floor at a high level, allowing more room for Giannis to operate. Reed is a great defender down low but Marc's 3 point shooting and high level passing for the position and less post up offense might make him a bit uncomfortable. Importantly he will also drag Reed away from the basket and provide more space for Giannis to drive.

flaco has a serviceable bench to be sure but All-Star Korver and All-NBA 3rd Chandler are far and away the two best bench pieces.

Best of luck, wack!

Rotations
PG: Oscar Robertson (38) / Jrue Holiday (10)
SG: Jrue Holiday (28) / Thabo Sefolosha (20)
SF: Jayson Tatum (33) Jared Dudley (15)
PF: Al Horford (28) / Nic Batum (15) / Jayson Tatum (5)
C: Willis Reed (38) / Al Horford (10)

Offense
We run a PnR/PnP-heavy offense forcing Marc Gasol to defend in space. Oscar and Tatum are the ball handlers. Willis Reed is one of the best undersized Centers ever. He'd thrive as a roll man thanks to his mobility and physicality. Horford can either roll or pop from 3. Jrue may provide occasional shot creation, if necessary. All my starters but Horford were key players on championship teams in their selected season.

A couple of words on Oscar who was playing long before most NBA fans started following the league. I'd argue he's a rich man's Luka: Heliocentric ball handler who relied on BBIQ rather than athleticism. Always played at his own pace. Could not speed him up or slow him down, just like Luka. Was still highly effective in Milwaukee. Finished 5th in the MVP voting in his selected season. Was relying a bit more on his outside game allowing Kareem to dominate the paint. By all accounts, he was a terrific shooter as evidenced by his career average of 83.8% from the FT line. Led the league in FT% in 2 seasons. More often than not, FT percentage is indicative of shooting ability. Not his fault his entire career was before the introduction of the 3pt line.

Defense
Both my bigs are reliable Giannis defenders. We drop back to protect the rim vs Giannis. We closeout and contest vs Marc. Reed comfortably led the league in DWS in his selected season. Would have likely won DPOY, but the award didn't exist at the time. The presence of a non-3pt-shooter in Moncrief allows us to either double on Giannis or blitz the PnR without risking an open 3. All players on the roster are switchable defenders. We have the option to switch all non-Giannis or Moncrief actions. Jrue and Thabo share POA duties. They are both exceptional defenders who can fight through picks vs Billups, if necessary. We go under vs Moncrief and dare him to shoot the 3.

Poll is tied at closing time. We'll add an AI vote.

ChatGPT vote wackbone

Spoiler:
This is a very well-matched series, with both teams having excellent defensive schemes and well-thought-out offensive strategies. Let's break it down by key factors:

Offense vs. Defense Matchups
Wackbone's Team on Offense
Giannis Antetokounmpo as the focal point:

Flaco's team has strong Giannis defenders in Willis Reed and Al Horford, both of whom are disciplined, physical, and mobile enough to at least slow him down.
The scheme of dropping back on Giannis while closing out on Marc Gasol is sound, but Gasol's passing and shooting ability complicates things.
Giannis still likely has a major impact, especially in transition.
Marc Gasol stretching the floor:

If Reed is forced to step out, that opens driving lanes for Giannis and Billups.
However, Reed is disciplined and may not fully bite on Gasol’s outside shooting, keeping some rim protection intact.
Chauncey Billups and Sidney Moncrief as secondary playmakers:

Jrue Holiday and Thabo Sefolosha are excellent perimeter defenders and will make life difficult for Billups.
Flaco's team can go under screens vs. Moncrief, daring him to shoot. Moncrief isn't a non-shooter, but he isn't a high-volume three-point guy either.
Kyle Korver as a major X-factor:

The best shooter on either team, and if he gets loose, he could shift a game or two.
Batum or Dudley would likely get minutes specifically to limit him.
Tyson Chandler as a lob threat:

If he gets minutes without Gasol, he could be effective in rim running, but against a drop coverage scheme, he might not be maximized.
Flaco's Team on Offense
Oscar Robertson as the engine:

A Luka-esque player in terms of pace and BBIQ, but he has to deal with Sidney Moncrief, a DPOY, which is one of the toughest matchups he could get.
However, Oscar has seen everything and still finds ways to be productive, especially in the mid-range.
Jayson Tatum as a key shot creator:

Guarded by Robert Covington and Giannis, two elite defensive players who will make things tough.
If Covington is on him, Tatum can attack off the dribble. If Giannis is on him, it’s a lot tougher.
Willis Reed as a PnR/PnP big man:

The strategy of attacking Marc Gasol in space is smart. Gasol is a good defender, but he’s not the most mobile in PnR coverage.
Reed was an efficient scorer and a physical presence who can still get his looks.
Jrue Holiday as a secondary creator:

Jrue is great, but Wackbone’s team has Billups and Moncrief to throw at him.
He might be more valuable as a defender than as an offensive piece in this series.
Al Horford spacing the floor:

He provides shooting, but Giannis and Gasol won't struggle guarding him.
Overall Matchup Takeaways
Defensive Advantage → Slight Edge to Wackbone's Team

They have two former DPOY bigs (Gasol and Chandler), plus elite perimeter defense in Moncrief, Billups, Covington, and Giannis.
They have no weak defensive players, whereas Flaco’s team has Oscar (decent but not elite) and Tatum (solid but not lockdown).
Offensive Advantage → Slight Edge to Flaco's Team

Oscar and Tatum as primary creators is slightly stronger than Giannis and Billups.
Better spacing overall, especially because Wackbone’s team has Covington, Tucker, and Moncrief, who aren’t as dangerous offensively.
If Marc Gasol can’t handle PnR coverage, that’s a big problem.
Bench → Slight Edge to Wackbone

Korver and Chandler are better than Thabo and Batum.
Flaco’s bench is solid, but Korver’s elite shooting is a real weapon.
Final Verdict – Who Wins?
This is a 6-7 game series that could go either way.

Flaco’s path to victory: If Oscar and Tatum control the game, Horford/Reed win the frontcourt battle, and Gasol is forced into too much space defensively.
Wackbone’s path to victory: If Giannis dominates despite the defensive attention, Moncrief and Billups disrupt Oscar, and Korver/Chandler swing games off the bench.
Prediction:
Wackbone in 7.

Defense wins out in a close series.
Giannis being the best player in the series gives them a slight edge.
Marc Gasol drags Reed out of the paint just enough to open things up.
Korver swings a game or two with his shooting.
Moncrief makes Oscar work for everything.
But it’s super close and could go the other way if Oscar/Tatum dominate.
