Defensive Matchups:
Payton on Westbrook — Payton’s elite defense is perfect to disrupt Westbrook’s ball dominance and chaotic drives. He can force Russ into inefficient shots and turnovers.
Dumars on Richmond — Dumars was a tough, smart defender who battled Michael Jordan — he can absolutely hang with Richmond.
Erving on George — Erving’s length and athleticism can slow PG down and challenge his shots.
Sheed on Bobby Jones — Rasheed’s range pulls Jones out of the paint, minimizing his help defense, and Sheed’s post skills can punish him offensively.
Unseld on Moses — Unseld’s strength and positioning help neutralize Moses’ post game. He won’t stop him entirely, but he can make him work hard for every bucket.
Offensive Strategy:
Attack Westbrook’s Defense — Westbrook’s defense is shaky when he’s exerting energy offensively. Use Payton’s strength and Erving’s cutting to force switches and tire him out.
Run the Offense Through Erving — Julius is the best offensive player in this matchup. Let him attack George (who will also carry a scoring load) and create open looks for Sheed and Dumars.
Punish Bobby Jones — He’s an elite defender but limited offensively. Sheed can bully him in the post and stretch him with threes.
Bench Edge — Their Kidd/Ellis/Collison lineup lacks scoring punch. Schrempf and Barry bring spacing and playmaking off the bench to extend leads.
Key Advantages:
Better Spacing Than It Looks — Payton, Sheed, Dumars, Barry, and Schrempf all have solid range for their eras. Westbrook’s poor shooting shrinks their offense.
Versatile Defense — We can switch easily with Sheed and Unseld's size and Erving’s athleticism.
Playmaking Depth — Payton, Erving, Dumars, and Barry can all create offense. Their secondary creators drop off hard after Kidd.
Good luck Dr. P
