Non-Dynastic Vintage Champions - Semi - MadNess vs wackbone*

Post#1 » by durantbird » Wed Mar 26, 2025 9:53 pm

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do not vote in this thread until both managers have submitted their writeups. Once the writeups are posted, I will add a poll, and the team with the most votes after 24 hours will advance. EACH MANAGER SHOULD ALSO VOTE FOR THEIR OWN TEAM IN THE POLL - IF YOU FAIL TO DO THIS, YOU ARE SIMPLY GIVING AWAY A VOTE. If the votes are tied, we will decide the matchup via AI vote.

You are not required to state or explain your vote, but you are free to comment in the thread if you want to.

If writeups aren't posted within 24 hours, we will vote solely based on the players they have drafted (and any rotations they have posted on their roster page).

PG: Damian Lillard (40) | Grant Hill (8)
SG: Luguentz Dort (34) | Thabo Sefolosha (14)
SF: Grant Hill (32) | Thabo Sefolosha (8) | PJ Tucker (8)
PF: Kevin Durant (37) | PJ Tucker (11)
Cc: Patrick Ewing (39) | Charles Oakley (9)

16’-17’ Kevin Durant 16.5 FGA
88’-89’ Patrick Ewing 16.0 FGA
96’-97’ Grant Hill 15.7 FGA
17’-18’ Damian Lillard 19.4 FGA
11’-12’ Thabo Sefolosha 3.7 FGA
22’-23’ PJ Tucker 3.0 FGA
22’-23’ Luguentz Dort 8.3 FGA
92’-93’ Charles Oakley 5.3 FGA

Total: 87.7 | 88.0 FGA

Write Up:
GL Wack

Offense:
Patrick Ewing is going to eat Sikma up. This is our go to match up here. We pump the ball down low and play off that. GH can cut, KD/Dame/Dort shoot the open shots feeding off Ewing. Ewing will have a dominate series. Chuck cannot defend KD. This is a mismatch. If Ariza is on KD, then Chuck cannot defend Grant Hill. We will look to attack Sikma fist, Chuck second. We feel these are our best opportunities for this series and we will exploit them. Thos 10 minutes Jaylin Williams is in the game, Ewing will have 20 points. LOL.

Defense:
Dort will face guard Curry for most the game. He is our POA defender. Same with Thabo. Try to take him out of the game. I will hide Dame on Ariza. Easy Peasy. GH will defend Walt. Grant Hill was one of the greatest wings off all time and an above average defender. He has great length and high BBIQ and would be a great cover for Walt. KD on Chuck is a mis match, but its the same on offense. KD will use his length and try to front passes. Patrick Ewing will defend the paint first and foremost, but also stick with Sikma. Oakley off the bench for 9 minutes will be 6 hard fouls on Chuck to beat him up.

Dame is Curry lite.
My big 4 overall is better than his big 3.

Ness, I will do my full writeup later, but FYI here are my main defensive assignments.

Curry on Dame, Barkley on Dort, Frazier on Hill, Ariza on KD, Sikma on Ewing

Christie will also play heavy minutes.

And FWIW Sikma led the league in DWS the previous season IIRC, he's not a turnstyle defensively.

Steph Curry - 2015 - 16.8 FGA - MVP, All-NBA 1st, All-Star, 44.3 3P% on 8.1 att, NBA Champ
Charles Barkley - 1990 - 14.9 FGA - 2nd in MVP, All-NBA 1st, All-Star, Highest WS & WS/48 of career
Jack Sikma - 1983 - 13.9 FGA - 11th in MVP, All-Star, Was All-Def 2nd the previous season
Walt Frazier - 1970 - (15.0x0.85) 12.8 FGA - 4th in MVP, All-NBA 1st, All-Star, All-Def 1st, Led League in All-Def voting (DPOY didn't exist yet), Led League in WS/48, Known Shooter, NBA Champ
Trevor Ariza - 2014 - 11.1 FGA - 40.7 3P% on 5.7 att, Known Defender
Harrison Barnes - 2015 - 8.0 FGA - 40.5 3P% on 2.6 att, NBA Champ
Doug Christie - 2003 - 7.0 FGA - 39.5 3P% on 2.3 att, 5th in DPOY, All-Def 1st
Jaylin Williams - 2024 - 3.3 FGA - 36.8 3P% on 2.1 att, Massive Cranium
Total: 87.8/88 FGA

Rotations:
Steph Curry (38) / Walt Frazier (10)
Walt Frazier (28) / Doug Christie (20)
Trevor Ariza (26) / Harrison Barnes (16) / Doug Christie (6)
Charles Barkley (38) / Harrison Barnes (10)
Jack Sikma (38) / Jaylin Williams (10)

Writeup:

Helluva team as always Ness, best of luck.

Defensively we will start with Curry on Dame, Barkley on Dort, Frazier on Hill, Ariza on KD, Sikma on Ewing. All-Def 1st Christie is also playing heavy minutes off of the bench.

Sikma was All-Def 2nd the previous season, Ewing is not going to run roughshod. 1990 Chuck is still agile enough to guard someone like Dort. We have 3 elite defenders (Frazier, Ariza, and Christie) for 2 of his main offensive engines (Hill and KD). Barnes is a 4th guy who can guard either for stretches.

Offensively Curry and Frazier split ball-handling duties - Curry is as effective on or off-ball, and Frazier was highly effective next to Earl Monroe so I don't see this pairing being an issue. Quite frankly I think they fit very well together. 2nd in MVP Barkley is the main threat down low, but don't sleep on Sikma. Ariza, Christie, and Barnes are the 3&D glue guys. Dort will have his hands full chasing Curry around all game and I'm not sure if Hill is quick enough to stick with Frazier super effectively. Barkley bullies KD down low.

Both teams have some glaring matchup problems, but I think ours are less of an issue. 2 of our elite wing defenders (Frazier and Christie) are a bit undersized to guard Hill/KD, BUT on the other end as I said I'm not sure how well Hill will do guarding Frazier and KD is tasked with guarding 2nd in MVP Barkley.

I'd also argue that ultimately we have 7 guys who offer legitimate offensive value to Ness' 5. And Sikma deserves to be in the discussion as part of a big 4.

ChatGPT vote wackbone - wackbone advances

Spoiler:
Star Power
Ness has Kevin Durant, Grant Hill, Damian Lillard, and Patrick Ewing.

Wackbone counters with Stephen Curry, Charles Barkley, Walt Frazier, and Jack Sikma.

Edge: Slightly Ness, due to KD’s two-way impact and Lillard’s scoring. Curry is the best player in the series, but Durant-Hill-Ewing is a formidable trio.

Fit
Wackbone's team has natural spacing, good shooting, and a smart secondary playmaker in Frazier who can defer or lead.

Ness’s offense is built around post play (Ewing), ISO/scoring wings (KD, Hill), and shooting threats, but Dame-Hill-KD all like to dominate the ball to some degree.

Edge: Wackbone, for better offensive flow.

Offense
Ness: Inside-out game through Ewing, with Hill/KD/Dame feeding off it. Solid, but not a ton of elite off-ball movement.

Wackbone: Curry movement gravity, Frazier’s smooth creation, Barkley bully ball, Sikma spacing from the 5.

Edge: Wackbone, because Curry + Barkley + Frazier as a trio gives multi-layered creation.

Defense
Ness’s perimeter defense: Dort and Thabo are elite at the point of attack. KD is long. But Dame is a liability and Ewing isn’t a switchable big.

Wackbone’s defense: Frazier, Ariza, Christie—elite wing defenders, with Chuck being a slight liability.

Edge: Wackbone, slightly, due to more switchable, versatile defenders. Though Ewing does protect the rim better than Sikma.

Depth
Wackbone: Christie, Barnes, Jaylin Williams – three solid, low-usage role guys.

Ness: Oakley (physical), PJ Tucker, Thabo – high-defense, very limited offense.

Even, but slightly Wackbone for offensive utility off the bench.

Matchups
Ewing vs Sikma – Ewing wins this matchup, but Sikma will fight and stretch him out.

KD vs Ariza – KD wins. But Ariza and Christie try to contain him.

Dame vs Curry – Curry is better, but Dame will torch him defensively.

Hill vs Frazier – Great battle. Frazier may be undersized, but was elite.

Chuck vs KD – Barkley feasts on offense, KD struggles to contain him.

KD can’t handle Barkley, and Dame will be hunted. But Wack also has issues checking KD and Ewing.

Final Verdict
Ness has a more talented top four, but Wackbone’s cohesion, offensive versatility, and more complete two-way lineup gives them a slight edge in a 7-game series.

Prediction: Wackbone in 7
Close, but Curry’s offense and Wack’s better-fitting defensive matchups allow them to grind it out.
