Redick Draft - R1 - durantbird* vs GeorgeMarcus

Post#1 » by durantbird » Sun Apr 13, 2025 1:58 am

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do not vote in this thread until both managers have submitted their writeups. Once the writeups are posted, I will add a poll, and the team with the most votes after 24 hours will advance. EACH MANAGER SHOULD ALSO VOTE FOR THEIR OWN TEAM IN THE POLL - IF YOU FAIL TO DO THIS, YOU ARE SIMPLY GIVING AWAY A VOTE. If the votes are tied, we will decide the matchup via AI vote.

You are not required to state or explain your vote, but you are free to comment in the thread if you want to.

If writeups aren't posted within 24 hours, we will vote solely based on the players they have drafted (and any rotations they have posted on their roster page).

Jason Kidd 09' - 7.6 - Dallas
Reggie Miller 00' - 12.9 - 3pt PCT
Jimmy Butler 19' - 13.9 - Philly
Larry Bird 86' - 19.6 - Coach
Tyson Chandler 08' - 7.7 - Pelicans

JJ Redick 09' - 4.7 - Magic
Marques Johnson 81' - 15.2 - Bucks
DeAndre Jordan 13' - 6.3 - Clippers

7.6+12.9+13.9+19.6+7.7+4.7+15.2+6.3=87.9

Kidd, Bird, Butler and Marques handle playmaking duties. Bird, Reggie and Redick provide elite shooting. While Chandler and DeAndre are both elite lob threats that anchor our defense.

Rotations:
PG: Jason Kidd 35 / Marques Johnson 10 / Jimmy Butler 3
SG: Reggie Miller 36 / JJ Redick 10 / Jimmy Butler 2
SF: Jimmy Butler 33 / Marques Johnson 15
PF: Larry Bird 38 / Marques Johnson 10
C: Tyson Chandler 30 / DeAndre Jordan 18

Vs

Shaq (38) / Zeller (10)
Bobby Jones (33) / Schrempf (15)
Doncic (30) / Schrempf (18)
Christie (35) / Doncic (8) / Hill (5)
CP3 (38) / Hill (10)

Matchup:

- Defensive assignments: Kidd vs Paul, Reggie vs Christie, Butler vs Luka, Bird vs Jones, Chandler vs Shaq.
- We match up great defensively—Kidd and Butler are excellent covers for Paul and Luka, and Chandler is a great cover for Shaq.
- Offensively, our fit is much cleaner: we surround our playmakers (Kidd, Bird, Butler, Marques) with elite shooters in Reggie Miller, Larry Bird, and JJ Redick. Even Kidd in Dallas was a very solid spot-up option.
- This spacing allows our offense to thrive with constant movement, drive-and-kick actions, and high pick-and-rolls involving Chandler or DJ as lob threats.
- Their team, while talented, is built around three high-usage players—CP3, Luka, and Shaq—who all operate best with the ball and can be limited with inadequate spacing. With wings like Christie and Bobby Jones around them, the floor will shrink fast.
- Jones also has durability concerns and might be stretched playing heavy minutes. Meanwhile, we bring Marques Johnson off the bench—a legit MVP candidate in '81 who provides scoring, creation, and positional versatility.
- While Schrempf is a nice weapon for them, Marques as mentioned was an MVP candidate. On the other hand, Cody Zeller wasn't very useful last year on either side.
- We also have the best player in the matchup—Larry Bird in his '86 MVP season—clearly outshining an early-career, less polished Orlando version of Shaq.
- Luka is guarding Jimmy.
- Our depth, fit, and high-level shooting give us the more cohesive and potent squad.

Starting Lineup
95 Shaquille O'Neal - 20.2 FGA - NBA2, MVP-2, Scoring Champion (29.3ppg)
83 Bobby Jones - 6.2 FGA - DPOY, 6MOY, NBA Champion
21 Luka Doncic - 20.5 FGA - NBA1, MVP-6
03 Doug Christie - 7.0 FGA - AllDef1
13 Chris Paul - 12.2 FGA - NBA1, MVP-4, AllDef1, Steals Leader (2.4spg)

Bench
24 Cody Zeller - 1.4 --> 3.0 FGA
95 Detlef Schrempf - 12.2 FGA - NBA3
20 George Hill - 6.4 FGA - 3pt% Leader (46.0%)

87.7/88 FGA

Rotation
Shaq (38) / Zeller (10)
Jones (33) / Schrempf (15)
Doncic (30) / Schrempf (18)
Christie (35) / Doncic (8) / Hill (5)
CP3 (38) / Hill (10)

Write-Up
Gotta keep this short.

Our offense features a fearsome 2-headed dragon of Shaq and Luka, orchestrated by none other than the point God CP3. We filled in the gaps with accomplished role players Christie/Jones/Schrempf/Hill who provide a mix of shooting and secondary playmaking. We'll feature Shaq most heavily in this matchup on the assumption that Chandler doesn't possess the lower body strength to hold his position in the paint (cue picture of his skinny legs :P ). It also helps that Chandler's presence (+ DeAndre's) ensures that Shaq can stay close to the basket defensively.

Primary assignments:
CP3 --> Kidd
Christie --> Miller
Luka --> Butler
Jones --> Bird
Shaq --> Chandler

GL db and great building!

ChatGPT vote durantbird - durantbird advances

Spoiler:
This is a well-matched series between two highly structured squads with clear identities. Let’s break it down category by category:

---

Top-End Talent

Bird (’86) is arguably the best player in the series—MVP, elite shooter, elite passer, and team glue.

Shaq (’95) is the most physically dominant player, and arguably the second-best. He could warp defenses if not countered properly.

Luka + CP3 vs Kidd + Butler is close. Luka/CP3 provide better on-ball scoring, but Kidd/Butler offer better defense and off-ball fit.

Edge: Slight to DurantBird for Bird’s MVP peak and overall versatility.

---

Offensive Fit

DurantBird’s team: Excellent spacing, multiple playmakers, deadly off-ball shooters (Bird, Reggie, Redick), and great lob threats. Kidd can play off-ball, Butler thrives attacking gaps.

GeorgeMarcus’s team: CP3 and Luka both need the ball. Shaq demands interior space. Christie and Jones are defensive-minded, and while Schrempf and Hill help stretch the floor, the overall spacing could get tight.

Edge: DurantBird – smoother, more synergistic offensive ecosystem.

---

Defense

DurantBird: Kidd-Butler-Bird is a very strong trio on defense. Chandler/DJ offer rim protection. But Reggie and Redick can be targeted.

GeorgeMarcus: CP3, Christie, Bobby Jones, and even Schrempf provide good positional D. Shaq can camp inside with few stretch big threats. Luka is the weak point.

Edge: Slight to GeorgeMarcus, especially with better 1-on-1 post defenders for Bird and Chandler.

---

Depth

Marques Johnson off the bench is a legit star-level sub.

GeorgeMarcus has Schrempf and Hill who fit well, but Zeller is less impactful.

Edge: DurantBird – Marques is a big weapon.

---

X-Factors

Shaq vs Chandler is critical. If Shaq dominates inside, DurantBird may need to adjust quickly (go to DJ more?).

Bird vs Bobby Jones: Can Jones slow Bird enough to limit the engine of DurantBird’s offense?

Luka/CP3 sharing duties vs cleaner role distribution for DurantBird.

---

Verdict:

In a seven-game series, it likely goes the distance. But due to superior fit, elite shooting around multiple playmakers, and Larry Bird’s all-time peak…

Prediction: DurantBird wins in 7.
GeorgeMarcus has more ISO brilliance, but DurantBird's cohesion and offensive flow give them the edge.
