GM-a-Team: Detailed Reports/Write-Ups (VOTING HAS BEGUN)

Post#1 » by zong » Wed Aug 6, 2008 3:46 am

Outline/Tutorial for the Write-Ups

Some notes beforehand:

1. This will be the thread to post your write-ups and write-ups only, do not post questions/rants/banter on this thread, if you need to ask a question, feel free to do it on the main thread.

2. I will use the Detroit Pistons' roster as the example since there's no GM available.

3. I will NOT determine how the votes will be gathered at this point in time (Aug 5th), as I am still getting emails regarding what needs/should be done. So I will allow the league to vote in a short while once I've determined all the possible options (feel free to send more suggestions to my email inbox, I don't mind replying)

4. I want everyone to meet the roster requirements (min salary, min/max roster spots) by Friday, August 8th, 12:01 AM PDT (3 AM EST)

5. Try posting pictures if you can, but do not post gigantic poster-like pictures, you can post player head-shots from Yahoo! sports or Shamsports or Hoopshype etc, but please, please, please, do NOT post big pictures, they tend to lag the thread and even the forum in the extreme cases.

6. When doing your writeup, keep in mind that you are to talk about your own team only, you are allowed to compare yourself to REAL LIFE franchises in the NBA, but not the teams in this competition, so please, do not talk trash/relate your team to other teams around this competition, there is absolutely ZERO TOLERANCE, your team will be immediately disqualified and all voting privileges will be taken away. You may, however, talk about your conference or relate to the league, but -NOT- specific teams within your division or another.

7. I want all WRITE-UPs to be done before Monday, August 11th, 12 AM EST

The Detroit Pistons

3. Total Transactions: 8

[THIS IS WHERE U POST UP ALL YOUR TRANSACTIONS, try to use the "small" size font if you have made a lot of trades]

4. Description of the plan/strategy you took to make these moves

Detroit wanted to deplete their roster of some of the older bodies so they could still contend while keeping a young and athletic roster, and thats exactly what we got with the addition of David West, Luke Ridnour, and 4 draft picks in the same draft.

(Obviously needs to be longer, I'm in a rush but thats basically describing a bit of the most important stuff)

5. Are you a win-now team, or a win-later team, or both? Why?

Detroit would like to contend NOW if possible, with the balance of power still in the Western Conferece, the Pistons have re-tooled for a possible title shot within the next 4-6 years. Also, the Pistons have made moves where if a rebuilding were to take place, they have the tools to build around for such a task, with David West, Luke Ridnour, Tayshaun Prince, DJ White, Rashad McCants, and some extra draft picks in the next few years.

(Good length and just about enough, but if you feel the need to explain even longer than this, it is perfectly not a problem, but try not to be any shorter than this)

6. What's your team's committed salary figures from 2008-2009 until 2014-2015?

(detailed screenshot link here, use excel if you can)

Yearly:
2008-09: $$$$$$
2009-10: $$$$$$
2010-11: $$$$$$
2011-12: $$$$$$
2012-13: $$$$$$
2013-14: $$$$$$
2014-15: $$$$$$

(Okay so I cheated here but I admit I was lazy to figure it out, oops)

7. Which draft picks have you acquired and which ones do you personally own? Give some reasoning for having the amount you do.

The Pistons franchise has not dealt too many picks away, they still have their own 2009 to 2012 picks because they feel that if a sudden rebuilding was needed, the picks would become a valuable asset. Also, since I do not have an aging problem in most positions on the team, the picks will become valuable as my future pans out to whether I am a young and rebuilding team or a win-now, contending team.

8. Who is your franchise player and/or co-franchise player? Who's the team captain? Is there a future franchise player on your team?

David West is my franchise player and Tayshaun Prince is my vice franchise player, Richard Hamilton is the team's captain. These choices were simple, West is an agile and powerful front-court player that is growing into his potential as an anchor on both ends of the court. Prince is my team's best defender and the team's glue-guy in terms of skill value. Hamilton is an easy choice as the team's captain as he's been with the team for the longest as well as having the experience and credentials needed to succeed. There is also no future franchise player on the Pistons as David West is still pretty young and capable. A player like DJ White might have potential to be a good player but nowhere close to being the "franchise".

9 A) What is special about your team?

The Pistons team is built from a prototype model of a franchise PF, and two supporting 2nd/3rd options on the wing. It is not necessarily a very flashy team in terms of specialty, but it does have the perfect role players as the starting lineup possesses players that are each good at something another isnt. Camby's defence, West's offence, Prince's all-around game, Hamilton's shooting and leadership, and Ridnour's playmaking and speed. My team possesses arguably one of the best frontcourts in the Eastern Conference, which is why I'm confident in my team's success.

9 B) What do you feel are some areas your team could improve on?

The Pistons franchise regrettably did not achieve its goal of find a more experienced PG to run the well-oiled machine of the Pistons' attack. Ridnour is a fine PG to man the point but for a team looking to compete at the highest level, Ridnour's lack of experience might not be able to cut it. However, Ridnour does give us the option of contending and developing naturally.

10. What are your plans in the future FA markets? (begin with 2009, 2010, and so on until the summer of 2011)

The Pistons have locked up a number of its key players so they are not going to be very active in pursuing FAs in the coming offseasons, small acquisitions might be more feasible, as for the bigger fish, we're going to decide against that, unless we trade away our older guys and rebuild.

The example concludes here for now, I might be adding a bit more later, but if you have any questions, please email them to me or post them on the main thread. You are allowed to edit your write-ups as long as you are not breaking any of the rules, if we do find some controversial stuff in your write-ups, we'll politely ask you to remove them, don't take offence to this, as we're only trying to make the game peaceful and co-operative among ourselves.

AGAIN, DO -NOT- POST ANYTHING HERE OTHER THAN YOUR WRITE-UPS

The original Bucks roster was an unorganized mess. Most of the players were perimeter oriented, spot-up shooters—there were no great passers, no great slashers, and no great defenders.

The offense was stagnant, and the defense was full of holes. My goal was to get some good defenders, a real point guard, and some interior players to work alongside Bogut.

The first step toward achieving my goal was to determine what players needed to go—and which ones had to stay. I decided to rebuild around Andrew Bogut, everyone else was expendable.

Then I decided to look at past championship rosters and see what made them great.
1) Great Defense. If you look back at the Lakers, Spurs, Celtics, Pistons, and even Heat, all of them had above average to great defense.
2) Interior force. Shaq, Duncan, Garnett, R Wallace, B Wallace, Robinson… All of the champions for the past several years have had a great interior player that was the cornerstone of their team’s offense, and defense.
3) Perimeter scorer. Peirce, Wade, Allen, Ginobili, Hamilton, Bryant. Having no Perimeter scorer allows teams to pack in the defense, and limit the effectiveness of an interior player. The perimeter player opens up the defense, and allows the offense to flow.
4) Solid point guard play. Rondo, Parker, Williams, Billups, Fisher. Having smart guards that don’t turn the ball over too much is key to a team’s success. Most teams that win the championship have one primary ball handler that can initiate the offense, and keep the ball moving.
5) Depth. I’m not going to list all of the great bench players on championship teams because of how many there are. It is pretty obvious why a great bench is necessary, without good backups starters don’t have a chance to get a rest and perform at their highest level.

New vs Old:
Gilbert Areanas > Michael Redd
Gerald Wallace > Mo Williams
Andrew Bogut
Travis Outlaw > Desmond Mason
Tyrus Thomas > Charlie Villanueva
Jarret Jack > Royal Ivy
Brook Lopez > Yi JianLian
Etan Thomas> Dan Gadzuric
Ramon Sessions
Roger Mason Jr. > Charlie Bell
Kirk Snyder
Smush Parker > Awvee Storey
Maceo Baston > Michael Ruffin
Goran Dragic

My new roster is a huge improvement over what I started with. I have one proven interior star (Bogut), and two potential all star power forwards (Thomas, Lopez). I also was able to get several great exterior players to compliment Bogut (Outlaw, Wallace, Areanas, Jack). The Bucks also have great depth now, complete with an interior stopper (T Thomas), a good interior scorer (E Thomas), perimeter shooters (Mason, Outlaw… both shoot around 40% from three point land), gritty perimeter players (Jack, Snyder), and a solid set of point guards (Areanas, Sessions, Jack, Parker).

I have even improved my cap situation. At the beginning of the game my team was above the salary cap…Now I am about 2.2 million dollars below the cap, enough to be able to resign one of my players, and to be able to sign draft picks without going into the luxury tax. I also had two of the worst contracts in basketball on my team, Dan Gadzuric (about six million per year), and Bobby Simmons (nine million per year) – I was able to get rid of both of those contracts while getting valuable players in return.

DEPTH CHART:
Bogut 34/E Thomas 4/ Lopez 10/ ??
Lopez 20/T Thomas 18/ Outlaw 10
Wallace 32/ Outlaw 16
Jack 24/ Mason 10/ Snyder 10/ Areanas 4
Areanas 30/ Sessions 12/ Parker 6

THE FUTURE:
I am excited by the potential of my team. I started out in the weakest conference in the nba trying to build a team that could compete for the championship. I feel that with the young core of Areanas, Bogut, Wallace, Outlaw, Thomas, and Lopez my team will be competitive for years to come.

I have several future picks, and prospects that already show promise. My team is extremely young and balanced, which is a formula for success. In two years when everyone on my team has had experience in the regular season, and playoffs my team will be one of the most dangerous there is.

The core of my roster will likely stay the same, with a little tinkering with complimentary players. I could stand to improve my shooting guard situation. While not horrible, my teams weakest position is the strongest in basketball. Next year’s free agency class is extremely strong. With teams looking to go under the cap to sign big-name free agents there will be several good role players available for cheap, and I intend to cash in. I have several Trade Exceptions, and some cap space to sign one or two players. With guys like Morris Peterson, and James Posey offering their services for the mle I am confident I can lure at least one very good shooting guard to my team.

In the draft I my team will look primarily for talent because all of the positions on my team are very good. Big-men, and shooting guards will be more highly sought than point guards and small forwards, but that doesn’t eliminate the possibility of drafting players at those positions.

I was also able to clear up over $20,000,000 to resign Andrew Bogut, Travis Outlaw, Roger Mason Jr, Kirk Snyder, and my restricted free agent Jarret Jack.
TRANSACTIONS:
1. Wizards trade/ Bucks recieve:
Antonio Daniels 5.8 million

Bucks trade/ Wizards recieve
Desmond Mason 5 million

This was a trade of necessity, there was no pass first point guard on my team, so I decided it was a low risk, high reward move.

2. Milwaukee Receives
Travis Outlaw (BYC, $4,000,000)
Martell Webster ($2,974,080)
New York's 2nd Round Pick (via Portland)
Total: ($5,974,080)

Milwaukee trades:
Jake Voskuhl ($3,000,000)
Yi Jian Lian ($2,777,760)

After I had completed this trade I began to wonder if I had made the right decision, but later in the game it set up so many things that would not have been possible, including acquiring Gerald Wallace.

3. Bucks trade/Knicks recieve
Dan Gadzuric $5,751,130
2008 Bucks 2nd

Knicks trade/Bucks recieve
Etan Thomas $6,370,000

Etan still has a chance at being a difference maker on my team, Gadz didn't, so I traded him.

4. Milwaukee Trades:
Michael Redd ($14,520,000)

Milwaukee Receives:
Corey Maggette ($7,840,000)
Kurt Thomas ($8,091,188)
2009 1st Rounder LAC (lotto protected)
2010 1st Rounder Toronto (lotto protected)

Outgoing Total: $14,520,000
Incoming Total: 15,931,188

14.52x1.25+.1 = 18.25>15.93

This was a HUGE salary dump that also set up most of my future trades.

5. Bucks release Awvee Storey

A bad, bad player that was taking up a valuable roster spot.

6.Indiana Trades

Othella Harrington $2,376,000, Joe Smith $5,205,000

$7,581,000*1.25= $9,476,250

Milwaukee Trades

Bobby Simmons $9,280,000, 09 LAC pick (lotto protected) and MIL 08 2nd round pick.

Notice something I traded twice? Yah, it's the 2nd round pick...big mistake, but I fixed it later in the game.

7.Milwaukee out:

MIL 08 1st
NY 08 2nd

FOR

NY 08 1st

I did this to ensure I got a good prospect, there were protections to ensure neither team traded a top 2 pick, and that I didn't trade two picks to go down in the draft.

8. Utah Sends:
Brent Barry $5,637,321
Philly 2008 second
Houston 2008 second
Utah 2011 first
Total outgoing: $5,637,321
Total Incoming: $6,591,610

Milwaukee Sends:
Charlie Villanueva $2,715,000
Charlie Bell $3,106,000
Michael Ruffin $770,610
Total Outgoing: $ 5,038,610 (Bell's salary counted as half due to his BYC status)
Total Incoming: $5,637,321

Another big salary dump. Without this trade I would not have gotten Areanas.

9. Milwuakee sends Phila 08 2nd, and Mil 09 2nd to Indiana for nothing (making up for trading my 2nd twice)

This was my fix for trading my pick twice, two instead of one, ouch...

10. MIL outgoing:

Maurice Williams $3,875,000 (BYC)
Joe Smith $5,205,000
Martell Webster $2,974,080

Total: $12,054,080

MIL incoming:

Gerald Wallace: $9,500,000
Maceo Baston: $1,830,000
Jarrett Jack: $1,217,400
SA’s 2009 2nd round pick

Total: $12,547,400

Bye bye chucking Mo!!! Trading Webster and Smith wasn't too much of a sacrifice to get a player at a position of need (Jack), and a star small forward (Wallace).

11. The Bucks sign Gilbert Areanas.

A BIG improvement over Redd.

12. The Bucks sign Kirk Snyder.

Toughened up my small back-court.

13.
MIL outgoing:
Daniels $6,200,000
2010 1st (lower of Mil, Utah)

MIL Incoming:
Chris Wilcox $6,750,000

I got a young player that was very good for an old player, and a late pick in 2010.

14. Bucks sign Smush Parker to the minimum.

I wanted another body at the guard position, Smush was cheap, and fit the bill.

15. *Bucks trade:
Chris Wilcox $6,750,000

Spurs trade:
Tyrus Thomas $3,749,880
Roger Mason Jr $1,900,000
Total: 5,649,880*1.25=$7,062,350

I got a player that shoots 40% from three, and a prospect that has already shown flashes of becoming a star for an athlete with low B-ball IQ.

How this team came to be:

When I first became GM of this team, I wanted to completely rebuild around Wade and the 2008 lotto pick. When nobody would give me expiring contracts that ended in 2008 in exchange for Shaq, I knew that I would be unable to rebuild. This led me to doing all I could to get this team another championship.

There were two trades that were huge turning points for my team. The first was when I traded my lotto pick for Jason Richardson. This trade confirmed that my team was going to compete NOW. As if a trade of an unproven rookie for a bonafide star wasn’t good enough for me already, I also dumped Blount’s contract and got Diogu and two 2nd round picks.

The next trade that really changed my team was the Dwyane Wade trade. This trade gave me a lot of flexibility by giving me two starters in exchange for one, a lotto pick, defense, and depth. Without this trade, I would never have been able to get my team to where it is now. The rest of the trades that were made brought me depth, championship experience, and better overall talent.

Why my team deserves your vote:

1. The goal of every team in the NBA is to win a championship. This team would definitely be in the running for a championship. The Heat team that I have built has arguably the best starting 5 in the league, great depth, and a hall-of-fame coach in Pat Riley.

2. I have taken the Heat from a team with no future to a team with an extremely bright future. This team only has three players above the age of 30, and only one of them plays a very prominent role. I have also set up my team to be well-stocked in the future. In the 2009 draft, I will have three picks. Those picks can either be used to move up, stash Euros overseas, or be traded for future picks. I also have many young players sitting on the bench, and I have a future replacement for Shaq in Curry.

Knocks against my team (and a rebuttal for each):

1. $95 million invested in this team? Do you know how much luxury tax your owner will be paying?

I do realize that my team has a hefty payroll, but the owner of the Heat, Micky Arison, has about $6 billion sitting in the bank. He shouldn’t mind paying $120 million, which is chump change to him, for a championship team, especially when teams bring in the money as they win games. There are also some teams in this league that have even higher payrolls than mine does, and my team will have cap space in 2011.

2. You can’t possibly trade a superstar and get better.

Yes you can. Think about the Miami Heat that I inherited before I took over: Wade, Shaq, Haslem, and a bunch of junk. Now I have Shaq, Haslem, Iggy, J-Rich, Curry, Rondo, Mo and Sean Williams, etc. Whom would you rather have? Wade, or all of those guys that I just listed?

3. How are there going to be enough minutes to go around?

If you look at my minutes rotation, it works perfectly. Rondo and Williams will split time at the point, and each brings something different to the table. At the 2, J-Rich would be the main man, and Hill would be just fine with that. Hill is injury prone and old, so he would benefit from the reduced minutes. Szczerbiak gives my team some much-needed shooting off of the bench, which would be a nice change-of-pace to Iggy’s style of play at the 3. At PF, Haslem and Curry each bring something totally different to the table, and they will split time there. Lastly, in the middle, Shaq will eat up the majority of the minutes, but Williams will still receive substantial minutes and bring some athleticism off of the bench.

Free Agency in the future:

I feel that my team doesn’t have many holes, so free agency in 2009 and 2010 will be used mainly to just fill out the end of the bench. In 2011, I should have some cap space, so if my team needs to add another star, or just needs to reload, I will be able to do that.

Captain:

Shaq will be the captain, as he has 4 championship rings, is the oldest and most-experienced guy on this team, and is a great leader who will intimidate the young guys.

Franchise Player:

There could be a few choices for franchise player, but J-Rich would most likely be that guy. He will be my team’s main scorer, he is just reaching his prime, and he is a very solid defender as well. The other guy who could be mentioned as my franchise player would be Iggy, as he is also very young, a very good defender, and a very good scorer.

On the Court:

In my starting 5, the offense will revolve around Shaq. If a team decides to double Shaq, then that means at least one of the other guys on the floor will be wide open. Obviously J-Rich and Iggy, who both should command double-teams as well, won’t be left wide open. Rondo can’t be left to roam free, and Haslem is a more than capable scorer. The starting 5 will cause fits for every team in the league in terms of stopping them.

Defensively, the starting 5 is very sound. None of these guys are defensive liabilities, and with stud defenders both on the perimeter (Rondo) and in the post (Shaq), teams will struggle to get good shots off.

My bench will definitely change the pace up a bit. I have two shooters in Mo Williams and Szczerbiak who will stretch the floor and allow Curry to dominate the post. Hill and Sean Williams won’t be that involved in the offense, but they both are capable scorers if left open.

The second unit isn’t as sound defensively as the starting 5, but they still have two very good defenders in Hill and Sean Williams who will help to mask some of the defensive weak spots of the other three guys.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I hope that you have read my comments and realize that this team is clearly better equipped than before to win a championship both now and in the future.

I would also like to thank bryant08, zong, clydestudent1276, and whoever else helped to run this game. This couldn’t have been done without you guys!

Plan
At first, Minnesota was trying to get younger and to try and get cap space for the 2009 offseason. During this process, Minnesota noted that a couple of other teams were trying to get 2009 cap space, and Minnesota decided to wait until 2010 and the better free agent class. Minnesota initially wanted to build around Al Jefferson, but as time went along, Minnesota realized that their team would be a solid playoff team in the upcoming years, but Minnesota did not believe that they were talented enough to be a title contending team. So, Minnesota reluctantly parted with Jefferson and started on their path on acquiring a lot of young players with tons of upside and hoping these players would develop into a stars. Minnesota was hoping to build their team around the frontcourt duo of Brandan Wright and Andris Biedrins, and their their backcourt duo of Foye and Conley, but as free agency came along, Biedrins got too large of an offer, and Minnesota decided to sign and trade him away. After a few more trades occurred to fill out Minnesota's roster, they realized that moving Randy Foye may be a good idea. With trading Foye and not having his cap hold in 2010, Minnesota believed that they would may be able to offer 2 max contracts that year, also Minnesota believes that the Sacramento 2009 1st will likely be very high (no knock against the Sac GM, just we use the real life team and I think that they will be picking in the top 5 this year)

Strategy
My plan as of now is to let my young players (conley, chalmers, brooks, brewer, alexander, randolph, wright, and mcgee) play a lot and to see how good they are. I brought in Foyle and Ross mainly for veteran leadership since Foyle is a good locker room guy, and Ross is a hustle player and hopefully our young players follow that example. Next year, we add a few more 1st rounders (we should have a couple in the lottery) to help round out our team. In 2010, we will have enough money to add for sure one max level player and maybe a second one. We can either take the best available free agent, or we could sign a free agent that will complete our team. Also, we still have some future first rounders past 2010 and our 2010 picks that we could use in sign and trades for restricted free agents (or to make trades for a star player from another team). With those free agent signings, our draft picks, and the young talent currently on our team; we will be a team to be reckoned with come 2010.

Minnesota 12 2nd

-we have a couple of first round picks this year, IMO Sacramento's will be a top 5 pick and very valuable. Also I think Minnesota could easily retain their pick this year and that would mean I'd have another top 10 pick. The Boston pick will be a lower first, but I could either use it to move up in the draft, or I could move it for future picks or something else. I have the Miami 2010 1st rounder which could be a pretty decent pick, also I could have Minnesota's 2010 1st rounder as well and those picks would be used to add players. I have a couple of 1st in 2011 (atlanta, Miami, and maybe Minnesota's) and since I will make my free agent splash in 2010, these picks could be moved to get me another good player (a couple of 1st rounders in the upcoming draft can land a pretty good player especially if I package some of the young talent that would still be on my team).

Franchise Player Value
My team captain is Quinton Ross. We brought in Ross to be an example to our younger players with his hustle and defensive abilities. We think that Ross's biggest value to this team is to help instill our young players with a drive to win and to develop their defensive skills.
I don't really have a franchise player right now. I have many talented players who will be given time to play. I will then be able to evaluate the skill of our players and see who will be a solid player in the NBA. If I had to pick one player to be our franchise player, I would pick Mike Conley. I think Conley will be a very good pro and will develop into an excellent PG that will "quarterback" our offense

Special about my team
The young players. Just look at some of the young talent on my team, and I bet that in 5 years or so more than one of them will be an all-star.

Could improve on
If I were the GM of this team, I would say ask me in a year after my young players had some playing time. Right now I would say that I need to get a young C. I could draft a C highly in next years draft or a C could be primary goal with my 2010 cap space. Also, we will give Zaza a chance to prove himself this year, and we feel that he could be a pretty good C for us. Another thing that I could improve is my cap situation since I'm in the luxury tax. If you look at my team, this year we would pay 10 million x 2 = 20 million in extra salary, BUT next year we would have a salary near 48 million, and after maybe 5 million in draft picks (we probably won't sign any free agents), we would have a team salary of 53 million or so. We would be close to 20 million beneath the threshold. So, in the long run, we probably would only lose a few million (from not getting a luxury tax check in 2008-2009) instead of many million as it would seem (assuming we went right up to the luxury tax in both years).

Future Free Agents
2009: we won't do anything drastic. We might not even sign a single free agent. Our potential biggest signing might be bringing back Zaza, but otherwise I don't see us signing anyone unless it's for the minimum to fill out our roster
2010: We will be spending money. We will have a lot of cap space, and we will definitely be throwing money at a few free agents. Like I stated above, we would be able to sign one max contract for sure, and we may actually be able to sign a second one as well. We don't know who we'd like to offer the contracts too yet, since we'd like to develop our players and see who we get in the upcoming drafts (obviously if someone like lebron, wade, or amare are available, we'd be very interested, or maybe more realistically, it might be more attractive if we could sign 2 of them to max contracts so that they could play together).
2011 and on: after spending big bucks in 2010, we'd probably be using our MLE to find a capable bench player(s) to push us over the top.

19. J.J Redick, Antoine Wright, and Oleksiy Pecherov to LA Lakers for Vladimir Radmanovic

4. Strategy
When I started this game I wanted to get younger at the PG position and build my team around Al Horford. Trading Joe Johnson and his huge salary was my first step to doing this. After I did that I had to rid myself of Claxtons Contract...which wasnt easy. Then i Started to rebuild, Josh Smith would hit free agency and i knew in a game like this he was going to get overpaid and I did not want to have to match that offer. Getting a Defensive minded SG in Brewer along with a Center in okur was too much to pass up along with picks. Then I started shipping picks and contracts out for expirings which i then used expirings to land Nene. I was Heavily shopping okur at the end but didnt see an offer that would make my team better as okur coming off the bench allows Nene or Horford to work better inside.

5. Win Later team
Given a few years together this team should jell nicely, in 2 or 3 years they will all be in their prime and the team is horribly deep with talent.

6.Salaries

7. Draft Picks[b]
None till 2013. With all the youjng guys I have aquired there is no need for draft picks.

[b]8. Franchise Player/Captains

As of now there is no Franchise player, However the team is built around AL Horford and in a few years he is expected to be the go to guy with TJ Ford coming in slightly behind him.

9. Whats Special
The team is so young and has so much potential, the average age is around 24 with Michael Finley and Mehmet OKur being the two oldest guys. In a couple of years this team is going to be scary since they are so athletic and deep.

10. Future plans
To move Mehmet okur for a younger PF/C is about the only plan I would have.

SONICS

1. We started with:
C – Johan Petro, Robert Swift, Saer Sene
PF – Kurt Thomas, Chris Wilcox, Nick Collison
SF – Wally Szczerbiak, Jeff Green, Damien Wilkins
SG – Kevin Durant, Mikael Gelabale
PG – Earl Watson, Luke Ridnour, Delonte West

2. We ended with:
C – Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Brendan Haywood, Saer Sene
PF – Antonio McDyess, Kevin Love, Richard Hendrix, Nick Fazekas
SF – Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Renaldo Balkman
SG – Jerryd Bayless, Chris Douglas-Roberts
PG – Rodney Stuckey, Kyle Lowry
Discard pile – Antoine Walker

Positions shown are where players are most likely to end up.

Quick recap:
Durant, Green, and Sene remain
Stuckey and Bayless > > Watson and Ridnour
Ilgauskas and Hawyood > > Petro and Swift
Love > Wilcox
McDyess > Thomas
Balance of the roster at least = balance of original roster
+ more future draft picks (see below)
+ vastly improved salary picture with huge cap space available 2010 (see below)

2008-09:
• Starters: Ilgauskas / McDyess / Green / Durant / Lowry
• Others playing 20+ minutes/game: Haywood, Love, Stuckey, Bayless
• Balkman sees spot duty as a defensive specialist; Hendrix and Douglas-Roberts get occasional minutes
• Sene and Fazekas return to the D-League
• Walker sits.

1-2 years away:
• Starters: Haywood / Love / Durant / Bayless / Stuckey
• Sixth man: Green
• Other significant rotation players: Sene, Lowry
• Spot duty: Balkman, one of Hendrix or Fazekas, Douglas-Roberts
All of this of course to be modified based on trades, a likely lottery pick in 2009, and three first-round picks in 2010.

3. Total transactions: 13
-- 2/7 Signed Rod Benson from D-League to minimum contract
-- 2/9 Acquired J.R. Smith & 2008 DEN 1st for Delonte West, 2008 POR 2nd, 2008 NO or HOU 2nd
-- 2/23 Acquired Rodney Stuckey, Antonio McDyess, and Primoz Brezec from Detroit for Chris Wilcox, Earl Watson, and Mikael Gelabale
-- 2/24 Waived Rod Benson. Acquired Shelden Williams, Jorge Garbajosa, Maceo Baston, and 2008 TOR 1st (top-3 protected) for Kurt Thomas, Damien Wilkins, and 2008 DEN 2nd
-- 3/15 In two trades with NJ, acquired Kyle Lowry and Lindsay Hunter (waived) for J.R. Smith, the return of NJ's 2009 2nd to NJ, and a TE equal to Lowry's salary
-- 3/16 Acquired Brendan Haywood, Desmond Mason, and Antoine Walker from Washington for Nick Collison, Wally Szczerbiak, and Maceo Baston
-- 3/26 Waived Primoz Brezec. Acquired Travis Diener, Ricky Davis, Andre Owens, and 2008 IND 1st for Luke Ridnour, Jorge Garbajosa, and the worse of Denv0er's or Toronto's 2008 1st's.
-- 4/28 Waived Andre Owens. Acquired Matt Barnes (expiring), Nick Fazekas, and Eddie Jones from Dallas for Desmond Mason and Johan Petro.
-- 5/30 Traded the #11 and #24 picks to PHI for the #9 pick and 2010 CLE 1st (top-3 protected).
-- 6/15 Acquired Zydrunas Ilgauskas from SAC for Ricky Davis and Eddie Jones.
-- 6/20 Declined to make qualifying offer to Robert Swift, making him an unrestricted free agent.
-- 7/21 Acquired 2010 LAC 2nd and $3.395M trade exception in exchange for Shelden Williams. Signed Richard Hendrix (2nd-round pick) to a two-year contract.
-- 7/29 Acquired Renaldo Balkman from Minnesota in exchange for Travis Diener and 2010 SEA 2nd.

4. The strategy behind the trades:
• Build around Durant and Green.
• Acquire additional strong young players (Stuckey, Lowry) 2008 draft picks (turned into Bayless, Love, Douglas-Roberts, Hendrix), future picks (added a top-3 protected 2010 first-rounder), and salary flexibility by trading away veterans who are unlikely to make a significant contribution to a contending team in 2-3 years.
• Add veterans who are young enough to make a difference over the long run (Haywood) or who can provide leadership and give the team a chance to compete every night over the next 1-2 years without compromising long-term salary flexibility (McDyess, Ilgauskas).

5. Win now, win later, or both?
Achieve respectability now, contend for a playoff spot next year, make a serious run two years from now. I started out with a team that lost 62 games this season, and there wasn’t nearly enough talent on the roster to create a contender in the short run. But you don’t build a winning team by losing every night, so I had to improve things in the short run too. The balance was to put together a solid mix of veterans and young players for next season – a team likely to play around .500 ball and wind up in the lottery – with enough budding stars to take off one to two years later.

6. Salary commitments going forward:

Image

Team options are included above; qualifying offers are not. Note the enormous amount of cap space available after the 2009-10 season – even if we re-sign Haywood and keep our rights to Sene, Lowry, and Balkman, we’ll be under the cap by $15-20M.

7. Which draft picks have you acquired and which ones do you personally own? Give some reasoning for having the amount you do?

Own – Seattle 2009 1st and 2nd, Seattle 2010 1st
Acquired – 2010 Cleveland 1st, top-3 protected; 2010 LAC 2nd
Traded away – 2009 NJ 2nd, 2009 Seattle 2nd

Rationale: traded away second rounders when needed to clinch a deal; acquired the extra 2010 first-rounder in exchange for a very late 2008 first because I had four 2008 firsts. Since the team is very young, I wouldn’t expect to use all of these picks – some are likely to go in a trade for veteran help.

8. Who is your franchise player and/or co-franchise player? Who's the team captain? Is there a future franchise player on your team?

Durant is, obviously, the franchise player. And McDyess is the captain – precisely the kind of veteran mentor a young team needs.

9 A) What is special about your team?

Young talent. For this team to be a very strong contender, Durant has to turn out to be a superstar; only one of Stuckey, Bayless, Love, and Green has to turn out to be a secondary star; and two of the other guys have to be solid starters. All of those seem pretty good bets. We have plenty of solid role players with complementary skills to put around them - Haywood, Lowry and Balkman are all excellent defenders who don’t need shots on offense – and lots of trade resources and future cap space to add a final piece in a year or two.

9 B) What do you feel are some areas your team could improve on?

First, it’s got to get older and more experienced. It will.

Second, we’ve got two combo guards in Stuckey and Bayless, both with great potential. I think they can play together, but it would be great if one of them developed more pure point guard skills.

Third, we’ve got plenty of shooting and slashing; we need a post scorer. I’m high on Love, but if he doesn’t turn out to be as strong as I expect, we’ll need to fill that hole.

10. What are your plans in the future FA markets? (begin with 2009, 2010, and so on until the summer of 2011)

We’ll have cap space to go over the MLE in 2009, and will use it only if the young players are developing well and we think that we need one more role player. More likely, we’ll hold on until the big free agent summer of 2010, when we’ll have tons of cap space and can attract a star looking to go somewhere where he’s got a fair shot at a championship.

4. Description of the plan/strategy you took to make these moves

5. Are you a win-now team, or a win-later team, or both? Why?
This team is set up to compete now and win later. With some vets like Daniels and Harrington coming into contract years they should hopefully put up some big numbers in Chicago. With Redd, Deng, Rose and Noah leading the way the future looks bright. I see this team and a playoff team in the East and a soon to be contender for the championship.

6. What's your team's committed salary figures from 2008-2009 until 2014-2015?

Yearly:
2008-09: $65,086,921
2009-10: $58,178,804 + Two first round draft picks
2010-11: $48,952,462 + 2 first round draft picks from 2009 + 1 first round draft pick from 2010
2011-12: $11,230,875 + 2 first round draft picks from 2009 + 1 first round draft pick from 2010
2012-13: $9,091,820 + 2 first round draft picks from 2009 + 1 first round draft pick from 2010
2013-14: $0 + 2 first round draft picks from 2009 + 1 first round draft pick from 2010
2014-15: $0 + 1 first round draft pick from 2010

7. Which draft picks have you acquired and which ones do you personally own? Give some reasoning for having the amount you do.

2009 First Round Pick (Chicago)
2009 First Round Pick (Via New Orleans Hornets)
2010 First Round Pick (Via [lower of Mil, Utah])
All Chicago Picks from 2011 on

Well I really only gave up four picks and have two new ones to replace them. I traded a 09 2nd round pick belonging to New York Knicks and a 09 2nd round pick belonging to the Bulls. I also traded my 2010 1st and 2nd round picks away. I have three first round picks in the next two years and all my picks after that.

8. Who is your franchise player and/or co-franchise player? Who's the team captain? Is there a future franchise player on your team?
Franchise player is Derrick Rose. Looking to become the leader of the Bulls starting now and into the future.
Team Captian is Michael Redd. Experienced with the USA team, and been in the league a while. A solid off court and on court influence and good image for the team.

9 A) What is special about your team?
To be honest, nothing is special about it now. Just alot of good young players who will need some time to learn and to grow. Hopefully with a good pickup of a down low player (Brand, West, LMA, etc) this team would become something special and be able to win a championsip.

9 B) What do you feel are some areas your team could improve on?
A down low presence, this would be dealt with via the soon to be expiring deals of Harrington and Daniels as well as 3 first round picks in the future.

10. What are your plans in the future FA markets?
If I can't find a down low presence via trade or drafting then the FA market will be used to fix that problem. Otherwise it will be used to find solid contributers at reasonable prices.
Man, we talkin' bout practice

Plan/Strategy when trading:
I started off this game by trying to make a bang to improve my wing situation and I believe I did so with the acquisition of Ron Artest. But as the days went by and I acquired a game changing big man in Chris Kaman, I decided it would be for the best of the team to move Artest to try and stay out of the luxury tax, while still being able to keep the core of Kaman/Bosh/Calderon in tact for years to come. But as I had dealt him, I had to leave the game which I thought was permanent and a replacement came in.

A huge offer from the Clippers was made to Jose Calderon and I lost him as well as Anthony Johnson to free agency. I returned with simply a few days remaining (after the replacement GM went inactive) and the team was in turmoil. Not a single PG was on the roster and it needed a shake up. I acquired Richard Jefferson to keep that elite wing and then moved to trying to add some chemistry and fundamentals to make the team click which I believe I did with James Posey.

But the team still lacked a PG so I brought in Daniel Gibson to try and perhaps solve the problem temporarily, but ultimately decided he was better left on the bench backing up RJ and not playing the 1. I then decided that Carlos Arroyo was worthy of the starting position and brought him in for a 2nd round pick as he is exactly the ball handler I needed. A tandem with Nate Robinson will be more than adequate for an Eastern Conference lacking elite PGs.

Daniel Gibson will be brought in to the PG position sparingly to bring some tough defense and 3 point shooting ability, but most of his minutes will be at the 2. Finally I signed Alonzo Mourning for a true C off the bench and the idea that I believe he could be a good mentor to some of my younger big men. I believe my main strategy was to up the level of defense and slashing in Toronto, which I have done. With Kaman operating down low, Bosh playing in the high post, Jefferson slashing and hanging inside the 3 pt line, Posey out on the perimeter and Arroyo making plays, I can see my team being very successful in the weaker Eastern Conference. My depth was something else I wanted to address, which I believe I have done quite successfully, with players like Udoka/Gomes having to fight for their minutes. I did not have much of a use for draft picks but one of my goals was keeping the team young while throwing in some seasoned veterans who are playoff ready. Kaman/Bosh/Gomes/Nate/Solomon/Gibson are all 26 under, while we have some playoff ready guys like James Posey as well as Alonzo Mourning and other guys in their prime like Richard Jefferson, Devin Brown and Reggie Evans.

Win-now or win-later?
Both, as I stated before I wanted to keep the team's main core young (Kaman/Bosh are the two centre pieces) while adding veterans that can make sure that once into the playoffs, we aren't simply out after the first round. The veterans core isn't too too old aside from Alonzo Mourning. We have guys that can keep our core the same for the next 2-3 years, and even after that still have quality players like Kaman/Bosh to lock up long term. Once again, in what is believed as a weaker Eastern Conference, I expect this team to finish atop or close to the top of the conference and continue their march to the Eastern Conference finals.

But later on, 5-6 years down the road, I plan to have Kaman/Bosh surrounded by more talent in their primes just like them at that point, so the Toronto Raptors could finally become one of those year-in year-out conference contenders.

Salary situation:
Image

Draft picks:
I have no picks until 2012, where I have my own 2nd rounder as well as that of New Orleans. I felt the need for young prospects was not needed, when I could add prospects that are still young, but are more proven players, with at least some proven potential. These players are the foundation of my team and are still young (Kaman/Bosh/Gomes/Boobie/Nate).

Player roles:

My franchise player and captain is Chris Bosh, he is the heart and soul of the Toronto Raptors. My co-franchise players are Chris Kaman and Richard Jefferson. The remaining players on the team understand their roles and I'm confident anyone can be effective when given minutes. Either of these franchise or co-franchise players could have a huge game any given night.

What's special/unique:
My team is built on a system similar yet different to many teams in the league currently. My backcourt revolves around energy and shooting ability, while my frontcourt is where I need my scoring and major defensive play. My team is not by any sense meant to be flashy, the name of the game is sound defensive basketball. I believe unlike many teams in the NBA currently, my big 3 stars are all in the frontcourt. Similar to the Bynum/Gasol tandem operating in LA, my C/PF combo revolves the C rebounding well and playing deep in the post, with the PF working in the high post or even further out within the 3 pt line. Richard Jefferson is the explosive scorer that the team was lacking on the perimeter, and with Kaman/Bosh taking up space in the post and with Bosh drawing doubles, RJ will have plenty of opportunities to prove what he can do with the ball in his hands. James Posey is starting to bring that intensity and defensive play out of the gate and the guy can definitely knock down the 3. Carlos Arroyo is the best ball handler on my club and has had success in the past when starting. Once again, Arroyo is a solid shooter and a player able to exploit gaps. What I find most unique about my team is it's depth. Top to bottom, my roster is full of solid players that know their role (Reggie Evans - rebounding, Nate Robinson - energy, Daniel Gibson - 3 pt shooting, etc.) and are capable enough to step in and start if anything goes wrong. I also look around at this current league in general and I don't see many teams with love for vets. I believe the only way you can build a winning roster is with players who have won before preaching to those currently attempting to lead the team to victory and players like Zo and Devean George provide this to the team's youth.

Improvements:
- The Toronto Raptors are disappointed that they couldn't acquire the one PG that could have really put them over the hump in the Eastern Conference. Arroyo/Robinson is a solid tandem in terms of energy, scoring ability and athleticism (at least from Nate), but it isn't the elite PG that could win this team an NBA championship now. The team is sure Carlos and Nate will lead the team to success and still believe the legitimate shot at an NBA championship is present, but of course every team would love to have that clear cut great PG.
- Lack of draft picks. This obviously does hurt the team in some form as draft picks help your fan base stay on their toes and for a playoff team can be a great way to try and bolster your roster or take a flyer on a guy that could be the next great steal. I believe that the team still has some young assets, but if the ship does start to sink, draft picks will be acquired in an attempt to rebuild the team. As an organization we have to be ready to plan the parade or rebuild, it all depends on how the squad performs and I as the GM am very confident we will be a contender for years to come.

Summer plans:
For the summer of 2009, I plan to make a little play in the free agent market depending on a few factors. The team could let Nate Robinson slip to FA and try to make a full MLE signing, which is a plausible scenario with PGs such as Luke Ridnour, Rajon Rondo, Kyle Lowry, and Rafer Alston on the market. It all depends on how we do this year. With many players locked up long term after that, I doubt I will be able to make much of a play in 2010, but re-signing Ryan Gomes would be a priority. In 2011, my priorities would be locking up Bosh long term, adding a bunch of guys to fill out the roster as role players similar to what I have now, and either signing RJ to an extension or looking for a guy that could do what he could for cheaper or someone younger to replace him. I would definitely consider trading RJ depending on his value before letting him hit the FA market.

Conclusion:
We had some ups and downs in this game, but when zong took over I think we finally started to get somewhere. Kingz did a fantastic job starting this game up and it's legacy continued with the running of this game (at times :P). When the game was first started by Kingz, I found it simply great fun. And towards the end of the game now, I finally started to feel the same passion and excitement as I did then. Thank you to all the active GMs and I hope the game gets going again sometime soon :)

Description of the plan/strategy you took to make these moves
First off I wanted to move out Al Harrington. It seemed like he was very unpopular in Golden State so it was best if he was moved out. It didn't take long and I acquired some size in Brad Miller in exchange for Harrington. Secondly I wanted to be in better financial shape. I knew I wouldn't be able to keep both Monta Ellis and Biedrins as I would have been in cap hell. I think I did a good job bluffing, making sure I got good value for both as I said I would match any offer for them. Same with Baron, with fear he could opt out, that would leave me without a longterm PG. I had a plan to get players that are relatively cheap and locked up long term in Caron Butler and Chauncey Billups. Yes I am still in the luxury tax now but I think I am better now then I would have had I kept Ellis and Biedrins. Both of them would have counted to almost 30 Million of my pay roll. I also got players that fit in Don Nelson's system. Players such as Boris Diaw fit perfectly. Nellie loves to go small ball and Diaw is very versatile and fits perfectly here as he can play anywhere from PG to C. I also aquired shooters (Ray Allen and Billups) who are always threats from beyond the arc which adds to our alreay powerful offense. Also I wanted to build around a big man instead of a guard (Monta Ellis). Teams that build around guards IE LeBron James, Kobe Bryant haven't been successful while others like Duncan have been. I really didn't see Monta Ellis as the future franchise player of the Warriors so instead I got a franchise big material in Al Jefferson. I have shooters built around him so if teams dare to double team Jefferson, he can kick it out to a open shooter for a 3. He gives us Points in the Paint that was sort of lacking here in Golden State. With having 4 great scoring stars already in the starting lineup, I felt I need to address the very lacking defense the Warriors have. I targeted a few big man with good defensive ability and was able to sign Diop. Diop is not here for the offense, as the other 4 are capable of scoring 20 on any given night. Diop will anchor our defense in the middle, giving us much needed shot blocking and rebounding. Not only that but I addressed perimeter defense. Butler and Billups are great perimeter defenders and should help shut down opponents. I also had to address the backup PG situation. CJ Watson clearly wasn't good enough to be the backup PG so I went out and acquired 2 very young pgs in a scorer in Douby and a passer in Koponen. They get to learn from the mentor Billups and should help them down the road.

Are you a win-now team, or a win-later team, or both? Why?
I believe my team is win-now and win-later. We are winning now because some of our veterans aren't getting any younger. IE Ray Allen and Chauncey Billups. But our main core of Caron Butler, Al Jefferson, Boris Diaw, DeSagana Diop and others are still relativley young and so we won't lose much later down the years. Ray Allen's contract expires next year and will free up about 19 million worth of cap room or could be used as an expiring contract and Chauncey can net us tremendous value in the market if a rebuild were to occur.

Which draft picks have you acquired and which ones do you personally own? Give some reasoning for having the amount you do.
Draft Picks
2009 Golden State First Round Pick
2010 Golden State First Round Pick
2011 Golden State First Round Pick
2011 Golden State Second Round Pick
I have Everything Later on..
The Golden State Warriors has not dealt too many picks away, we still have every first rounder in the future because these draft picks give me great tradeable assets moving forward. If I want to add that last piece to the puzzle to a championship, I can package it with some youth that is stocked up on this team to aquire that. If the team is not successful then we have the luxury of having a high draft pick to aquire another young piece to the puzzle or using it's high trade value.

Who is your franchise player and/or co-franchise player? Who's the team captain? Is there a future franchise player on your team?
Al Jefferson is my franchise player. It's simple because you always want to build around a big man and Jefferson has the tools to be the next great big like a Tim Duncan. Chauncey Billups and Ray Allen are the co-captains. Billups and Allen are the captains because they have the experience and winning attitude needed to succeed. They each have a ring also so they know what is needed to be done. There will not be a future franchise player on the Warriors for a long time. Al Jefferson is pretty young and turning into an all-star stud. A player like JJ Hickson, Marco Belinelli or Petteri Koponen might have potential to be a good player but nowhere close to being the "franchise". Hickson I think could make a great punch with Jefferson in the future as both want to get down low in the paint and we always have shooters to kick it out to. Koponen I think could be special. He's still very young at 19 and has the potential to be a Steve Nash type player. With a mentor like Billups I think he will learn a lot from him. Belinelli is compared to Ray Allen and getting the chance to play with him will only make Belinelli a better scorer and shooter.

What is special about your team?
Our team will score, and score a ton. Don't be surprised if our team puts up 120+ a night. With a shooter and floor leader like Billups and one of the best shooters in the league in Ray Allen, an absolute scoring machine in Jefferson and a slasher in Butler I could get a combined 80 points already from the just the 4 players. Instead of a "big 3" I have a big 4, 2 great defenders (Billups, Butler) and 2 scoring machines (Jefferson, Allen)

What do you feel are some areas your team could improve on?
I think we could improve our cap situation a bit, we are over the luxury tax but not that much. Also I think the Warriors could use some more big man depth as I need a bit more size if we are matched up against a big guy like Shaq.

What are your plans in the future FA markets?
I will be in the luxury tax for the next 2 years so I don't plan on any major FAs only sign minimum players. After that I hope to get a MLE player in 2011 and start signing major FAs in the 2012, 2013 season.

STRATEGY:

When I took over this team, it was not ready to be as competitive as other teams in the league. At the time of taking over Grizzlies, teams like Boston and Spurs were also available for me to manage but the reason I chose to be a part of Grizzlies was that this team was the best to start from scratch building the entire team around Rudy Gay. Throughout the season of 07/08, I have taken this team through a massive rebuilding process acquiring young assets and tomorrow’s superstars like Monta Ellis, Andris Beidrins and Jason Thompson. The process of attaining Ellis required Mike Conley to be traded. Darko Milicic, Kwame Brown and Brian Cardinal had to be a part of the process of making Ellis a permanent member of the organization. For Ellis to be easily signed in the offseason, these players had to be traded since the lad was going to be a restricted free agent in the offseason and due to that Grizzlies needed to clean up some cap space in order to match any offer for the lad. The signing of Beidrins wasn’t really hard as it included Anthony Randolph, Steve Francis, Jason Collins and Renaldo Balkman. Though I lost couple of young guys, one of them being this year’s draftee, Beidrins was the player my team needed to handle the forward position along side Jason Thompson. Though Beidrins brought a lot of potential with him, he also brought a hell lot of salary with him as well which was the down side of Beidrins being a part of this team for the coming years. I was shopping for Beidrins but due to the amount of money he was making, no serious offers were made to Grizzlies.

WIN NOW OR WIN LATER OR BOTH?

The way the team is currently shaped, it is definitely a Win Later team seeing as the team is still in a rebuilding process of adding more depth to the roster.

FRACHISE/CO-FRANCHISE AND TEAM CAPTAINS

The fact that this squad is built around Monta Ellis and Rudy Gay, the face of this franchise will be Rudy Gay alongside the co-franchise, Monta Ellis. The team captains will be Rudy Gay assisted by Monta Ellis.

WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE TEAM?

The team is very young with a lot of talent and potential to become an elite part of the league and to be competitive in the coming years. The team has couple of veterans to assist this young group of players because of the years of experience that they carry with them. In the upcoming years, the team will become as deadly as the more experienced team such as Boston since the team is promising, talented, young and last but not the least, athletic.

FUTURE PLANS:

Grizzlies would like to add more depth at the Point Guard position as well as the Power Forward position. Also, we would like to trade Beidrins for someone who can lead the team to the playoffs with the combo of Ellis and Gay.

"1. This will be the thread to post your write-ups and write-ups only, do not post questions/rants/banter on this thread, if you need to ask a question, feel free to do it on the main thread."

If that applies to current participants, you'd think it would apply to future hopefuls even more so.

4. Description of the plan/strategy you took to make these moves

When I started this competition, Portland had a boatload of assets but were loaded with young, unproven players with tons of potential. At first I had tried to build around a core of Oden/Iguodala/Roy, but then I realized that that was not enough to make an impact, so I decided to build around a more spectacular core of players that have playoff experience and a flashy resume to boot. Acquiring Amare Stoudemire and Dwyane Wade were my biggest moves, as they shaped my roster into a perennial contender for the next decade. I also wanted to balance out my lineup as well as my bench unit so I acquired key complimentary players as well as role guys off the bench. Josh Howard and Kirk Hinrich adds a defensive boost and all-around game to ease the pressure off of my big 3 trio of Oden-Amare-Wade. I made all these moves in preparation of Oden’s rise to fame. He is projected to be slow out of the gate, but with some great help from his teammates, his developmental process will not be very hard, as he can learn on the fly and become what is expected out of him, a franchise C that anchors my defense for the next decade.

My bench unit consists of some very good role players that will not complain about minutes. Joel Przybilla will anchor the bench unit’s frontcourt defence with his rebounding and shot-blocking, while Rudy Fernandez and Yi Jian Lian will take the bulk of the shots and develop into their potential and expectations. Brandon Rush is also a quite intriguing prospect which helps out my perimeter defence while Jason Kapono provides the extra 3-point shooting spark if needed in emergencies.
My team has gone over the salary cap by quite a lot, and even past the luxury tax. This is in part due to Steve Francis’ 15 million dollar contract, which considerably shoots up my tax threshold. My financial statements are included in a screenshot a bit further down this page. You will see how the numbers slightly dip after Francis’ waived contract is off the books after 2009.

The Portland Trail Blazers also depeleted most of their draft picks for the next 4 years or so, as I feel that the franchise has enough prospects to develop for the time being in Rudy Fernandez, Yi Jian Lian, Brandon Rush, and even Greg Oden. I felt that I possess a good mix of veterans and youngsters as well as superstars in/approaching their primes, so draft picks will not affect my team that much down the road.

5. Are you a win-now team, or a win-later team, or both? Why?

The best part about the transactions I’ve made is that the team can be allowed to compete both now and for the future.

Why? The Trail Blazers possess a player that has championship experience in Dwyane Wade, who led the Heat to the title in ’06 and is hungry for more success. He is entering his prime and so is Amare Stoudemire and Josh Howard, even Kirk Hinrich can be considered to be entering his prime. Since I possess some good role players on the bench, I have the assets to put together a serious title run. At first it may look like my team’s overall outlook looks to be skewed towards the future because of the prospects I possess, the squad is extremely talented and the future is very bright with potential just oozing from my quartet of rookies Oden, Fernandez, Rush, and Yi (okay so hes a soph). So therefore, I have no doubts they will contend very hard for a championship in a very tough conference in the coming decade.

6. What's your team's committed salary figures from 2008-2009 until 2014-2015?

CLICK LINK BELOW:

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/7844 ... allnj2.jpg

7. Which draft picks have you acquired and which ones do you personally own? Give some reasoning for having the amount you do.

Draft Picks:

2008 1st Rounder (traded to San Antonio)
2008 2nd Round (#45, via Toronto)(traded to Memphis)
2008 2nd Rounder (traded to Seattle, via Boston)
2008 2nd Rounder via New York (traded to Milwaukee)
2008 2nd Rounder via Phoenix or Indiana, Indiana's choice (traded to Cleveland)
2008 2nd Rounder via Memphis (Traded to Cleveland)
2008 2nd Rounder via Dallas (Traded to Atlanta)

2009 1st Round Pick (Traded to Miami)
2009 1st Round Pick[ (via Charlotte, Top 7 Protected(traded to Boston)
2009 1st Round Pick (via Toronto) (traded to San Antonio)
2009 1st Round Pick (via New Orleans) (traded to Chicago)
2009 2nd Round Pick (via Denver) (traded to San Antonio)
2009 2nd Round Pick (Traded to Philadelphia)
2009 2nd Round Pick via Phildelphia (Traded to Washington)

2010 1st Round Pick(traded to Memphis)
2010 2nd Round Pick (traded to Cleveland)

2011 1st Round Pick (Traded to Miami)
2011 1st Round Pick via Miami (Traded to Minnesota)

8. Who is your franchise player and/or co-franchise player? Who's the team captain? Is there a future franchise player on your team?

Without a doubt, Dwyane Wade is my franchise player and Amare Stoudemire is my vice franchise player. Dwyane Wade will also serve as the team's captain while Kirk Hinrich serves as the vice-captain. These choices were pretty easy to make, although Greg Oden has the makings of a potential hall-of-famer, he is not ready yet for the big lights of the “franchise player” tag, so Wade will suffice for the moment. Dwyane Wade has a championship ring and knows how to be the takeover player my team needs, he is arguably the most electrifying guard in the league right now, while Amare is one of the most explosive big men in the game. If I had to choose, I would have Oden to become the future franchise player for this team, if he can keep his injuries to a minimum, there is no reason why Oden wouldn’t become a better player than Wade during his prime.

9 A) What is special about your team?

What’s special about this Trail Blazers compared to the other teams in this tough conference is that my franchise possesses balance and consistency night-in and night-out. My team’s main strengths and go-to game is the explosiveness of Amare and Wade, a very good 1-2 punch on offence while the defence is anchored by Oden in the frontcourt, and Hinrich in the backcourt. Amare and Wade also possess similar defensive games, gambling on defence, but are top-notch help defenders that will compliment Oden and Hinrich very well. Josh Howard provides an above-average perimeter defence on the wing while Brandon Rush learns from the bench, and will eventually take over as the team’s starting SF and premier wing defender once Howard’s contract is up. The bench is also very balanced and knows their roles. Since my starting lineup will need their minutes, the bench unit will develop off of backup minutes and eventually work their way into the lineup in a few years when the big FA crop in 2010 and 2011 comes up.

In essence, my team will look to get the ball in Wade and Amare’s hands, while Oden becomes a 3rd option along with Howard on offence, and Hinrich will mainly be a spot-up shooter for the team if they’re playing against a zone defence. I’m very confident in the team I’ve put together and they are likely to do a lot of damage during their primes.

9 B) What do you feel are some areas your team could improve on?

I admit that I was a bit hasty when making my moves that I forgot about 3pt shooting. Although I possess Rudy Fernandez and Jason Kapono, they aren’t likely to get a ton of minutes so they will have to be ultra-productive in their minutes played, as they will likely play when Howard is on the bench or the rare moments Wade is resting. However, if an injury does occur, my team is very deep and will be ready to fill the rotation very quickly. My frontcourt defence will also be questionable for the next couple of years before Oden develops into a more complete player, I am hoping that Przybilla will be able to hold up against some of the Western Conference’s top big men until Oden is ready to demolish them when he reaches his potential.

10. What are your plans in the future FA markets? (begin with 2009, 2010, and so on until the summer of 2011)

The Trail Blazers have locked up a number of its key players for the next 3 years, with 2010 being a risky year for Dwyane Wade and Amare to leave, I think they will stay via a new contract they’ll sign with us because they will understand that the team is ready to contend no matter what the cost. As my owner is fine with paying the luxury tax as long as we are committed to winning. The only activities I may engage in future FA is to maybe get some more experience in the long-run, such as a more suitable backup PG and a banger PF. At this moment, I’m looking forward to staying put and stave off the pressure of paying the luxury tax.

The Plan

New Jersey knew that the current "Big 3" of Kidd, Carter and Jefferson had gone as far as they were going to go. They knew a rebuilding was in order, so moving Kidd and Carter for younger and cheaper talent was the first priorities. When the smoke cleared, New Jersey was able to turn Kidd and Carter into Leandro Barbosa, three draft picks (one of them Speights), Kyle Lowry (later became J.R. Smith) and a ton of expiring contracts.

Trading Richard Jefferson was not a top priority, but the combination of Gallinari falling to pick #10 and a trade offer involving Okafor was just too good too pass up.

The goal was to build a roster that is both young and athletic. I feel that was accomplished with the additions of Okafor, Smith, Gallinari and Barbosa, along with extra first rounders in 2008, 2009 and 2012.

We entered the summer with close to $30 million in cap room. Retaining Okafor and JR Smith were the top priorities with hopes of adding another elite young free agent (Josh Smith was the top choice).

After failing to land that type of free agent, the plan shifted towards cap room the next summer. Trading Nenad Krstic to Atlanta and the short term contracts to Allen and Nachbar were a part of that plan. While the major rebuilding had already been done, we weren't necessarily looking at contending in 2008/09. That plan took a change in direction when Baron Davis. Davis is 29, but the chance to upgrade from Hinrich to Davis (while at the same time turning Luke Walton into an expiring) at the cost of 2 non-lottery picks was too good to pass up IMO.

With the Baron Davis trade, I would probably qualify as a win-now team. However with the future cap and collection of young talent/picks, I would consider myself a win-later team as well.

Salaries:

Work in progress. Zong, where can we get the info for the rookie picks?

Future Draft Picks
Picks I Owe: None
Picks Owed to Me: Atlanta's 2009 1st rounder (unprotected), Atlanta' 2009 2nd rounder, Chicago's 2009 2nd rounder, Atlanta's 2012 1st rounder (unprotected)

As part of the rebuilding process, I felt it was necessary to build up a collection of draft picks. Even after trading 2 first rounders for Baron Davis, I have five picks in 2009 and four extra picks over the next four drafts.

Franchise Players/Captains

New Jersey has a pair of franchise-caliber players in Baron Davis and Emeka Okafor. J.R. Smith and Danilo Gallinari also have the type of talent to be core players now and in the future. Due to his experience, Davis is the team captain.

Team Strengths:

I think this is a very athletic and versatile team. With Baron running the show, this is a team that can run up and down the floor for this wide-open offense. Boone and Okafor have the athleticism to keep up in this offense and Okafor's shot-blocking should help start a lot of fast break opportunities.

Joining them are two ultra-athletic guards in JR Smith and Leandro Barbosa. Both also provide lethal shooting from the perimeter. Another potentially lights out shooter is Danilo Gallinari. Gallinari is not the athlete of Smith/Barbosa, but his height and point guard skills at the SF position gives him the potential to be a matchup nightmare for opposing teams.

Bostjan Nachbar and Tony Allen also provide excellent athleticism to go along with outside shooting (Nachbar) and defense (Allen). They along with Steve Blake provide New Jersey with excellent depth at the PG/SG/SF positions.

Team Weaknesses:

The depth up front is not yet at the desired level. Mareese Speights is a very talented player, but as the top big man off the bench, is he ready to play 18-22 minutes right away. Nachbar can play a little PF in a small lineup, but is not a true PF. Gallinari does not have the bulk to be an option at PF. Voskuhl, Croshere and Pollard were signed to provide more depth, but they are likely to be liabilities if asked to play major minutes.

Future Free Agent Plans:

New Jersey will enter the 2009/10 season with roughly $9-14 million in cap space, depending on what the cap is at and if Nachbar exercises his player option. If they don't add any long-term contracts, they could carry around $13-15 million in 2010/11. Additional moves would likely need to be made in order to make a max-contract offer to one of the elite free agents that summer (we know who will be available).

4. Description of the plan/strategy you took to make these moves

I looked at the current real life Knick team and I recognized there were many problems that have never been fixed. We don’t have a true leader at point guard, a consistant outside shooting threat, a shotblocker and low post defender, much in the way of defense or a superstar. I feel I have done a damn good job at resolving those weaknesses.

5. Are you a win-now team, or a win-later team, or both? Why?
We are a team that is both a win now and win later team. How much of a win now team depends primarily upon Augustin’s development and the health of our starters. If Augustin is as good a point as we think he is and our guys stay healthy we have the potential to surprise a lot of teams. At the very least I am sure this squad is a playoff squad.

6. What's your team's committed salary figures from 2008-2009 until 2014-2015?
I have not been able to get the screenshots because I do not have the Microsoft Paint program the tutorial asks for so I will have to describe my financial situation. For the upcoming season my team’s salary will amount to just under $81 million dollars which is a good $12 million dollars less than the Knicks current financial commitment. The following season, despite Jorge Garbajosa, Stromile Swift and Primoz Brezec coming off the books the Knicks salary will be roughly $72.9 million dollars which is $12 million more than the current Knicks salary situation. The following year the Knicks overall salary commitment will amount to roughly $50 million dollars or $4-5 million more than the current Knicks. That number is misleading though because while Damien Wilkens and the recently released Mark Blount will never be brought back to the Knicks Joe Johnson will likely be resigned b4 he becomes a free agent so I expect to be in the low to mid $60 million dollars range in salary commitment for the 2010-2011 season.

7. Which draft picks have you acquired and which ones do you personally own? Give some reasoning for having the amount you do.

The Knicks have acquired a ton of draft picks. Between now and 2012 the Knicks will own all of their own first and second round picks with the lone exception being their 2010 first rounder (unprotected). I believe New Orleans currently owns that pick. To all those picks I have acquired either Miami or Portland’s 2009 first rounder (Portland’s pick if Miami’s in the top 5) (renaldo balkman deal), the LA Clippers 2009 second rounder (Joe Johnson for Arenas deal) , the New Orleans Hornets 2010 and 2011 second rounders (Gomes/Robinson deal), Toronto’s 2011 first rounder (Gomes/Robinson deal), and Portland’s 2012 first rounder (huge Tim Duncan deal). All told the Knicks will have 13 draft picks within the next 4 years. To go along with the 3 picks the Knicks had in this most recent draft. I’ll have plenty of ammunition to plug any holes that develop in my roster or to swoop in and steal a desired prospect b4 someone else does.

8. Who is your franchise player and/or co-franchise player? Who's the team captain? Is there a future franchise player on your team?
Right now my franchise player is Joe Johnson. I hope DJ Augustin can turn into a franchise player but its still too early to tell.

9 A) What is special about your team?
Our starting rotation is very balanced offensively and can get up and down the court. It is a very young team with room to improve. Despite the lack of offensive firepower, as explained later, each position has depth.

9 B) What do you feel are some areas your team could improve on?
Our bench does not have enough offensive firepower. When Wilson Chandler, Stromile Swift and Anthony Carter are your primary offensive threats off the bench your team better hope your starters don’t miss a lot of time due to injury. I regret that deal that shipped Gomes and Robinson away. I also think Chris Duhon would have been a better backup point guard choice than Anthony Carter but I chose not to go after him because I felt the market would drive his price much higher than it actually did. I turned to Carter because I thought he’d be a bargin in comparison but with my team no longer in the market for a veteran backup Duhon’s price dropped to the point where he was a steal for whatever team that eventually signed him. Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20.

10. What are your plans in the future FA markets? (begin with 2009, 2010, and so on until the summer of 2011). Unless a get an opportunity at an upgrade at some point it is likely that I will do everything in my power to keep control over Joe Johnson and Samuel Dalembert. Dalembert, Johnson and Augustin are my core 3 players and my team would be built around them. Peja is a question mark. Whether he stays beyond his current contract length is dependent upon his health, production and my ability to find a cheaper replacement via trade, free agency or the draft. Generally, I will approach free agency the same way I approached it this season. I let other teams look to make the big splashes while I’ll hang on the outside and target specific free agents who have the potential to provide a lot of bang for their buck. I’ll particularly be looking out for young players who haven’t lived up to their promise for low risk but potential high reward free agent signings.

Re: GM-a-Team: Detailed Reports/Write-Ups (DUE AUGUST 11th)

Post#20 » by skorff26 » Wed Aug 20, 2008 12:11 am

Well since the write-ups were due over a week ago, and zong has disappeared; I've decided to take babyjax's idea and copy and paste the rosters

-if a team does submit a writeup, I'll delete the copy and pasted roster

-this way, we can start voting in the next few days (since 2 weeks is enough time to do a write-up), hopefully zong will lay out some guidelines for the voting (or if zong doesn't want to, maybe clydestudent would be up to doing something like that since he's a commissioner in the league as well)

Anyway, I'll start copying and pasting the other rosters now.
