New Game: Create-a-Team (CAT) Discussion Thread

Ok guys,
Who is in on the new game, I have been telling ya'll about?
This is going to be like a Build an NBA Team but with a few additions to the game.


OutlineThe structure of the game will be similar. The game will start with a drafting session, then move on to a trading period and free agent signing period. Then there will be a voting period. When it comes time, I will enlist a voting panel. Your objective will be to create the best possible team for the 2008-2009 season. There will be a salary cap. The salary cap will be determined after the draft is complete. The roster will be 12 men deep. Injuries will be factored in. For example Brendan Haywood has been out all year, you don't want to employ him or Carl Landry was shot and should only miss 2-3 weeks, you might want to take the chance on him. It will all be determined by a voting panel of your peers. So you should build your team while considering what the voters will be thinking.

You will also be responsible for assembling a coaching staff. You will play the part of the team, and I will play the part of the coaches agent. You will make an offer to the coach and I will respond with an email or by instant messenger the agents response.

Drafting
There will be 5 drafting rounds. After the draft you will start signing free agents. The drafting order will be chosen randomly. It will be a snake draft, order will be as followed:

The amount of teams will be determined by the amount of interest this game gets.

Salary Cap
The salary cap is one of the most interesting things about this game.
The coaching staffs salary will count towards your salary cap. Salary cap will be the average teams payroll plus $40m after drafting is complete.
Salary numbers will be simplified. A players salary will be based on the closest million or half million For example:
Player A's real NBA contract is 5.26m. His salary in this game would be 5.5m
Player B's real NBA contract is 5.12m. His salary in the game would be 5m
If you sign a free agent you will sign him to a million or half million figure
For example: You can sign him for $1,000,000.00;$1,500,000.00;$2,500.00,etc.

Edited: This will be a hard cap, there is no luxury tax because you are forced to be under the cap.
The only exceptions that will be given are injury exceptions and only on a case-by-case basis to players that are drafted and injured after being drafted OR if a players expected return date has posted on a credible media site, and then extended for some reason. There will be no MLE, LLE, or any other exceptions.

Trading
I will play the part of the commisioner. Any trade is subject to an appeal. Trades do not need approved by the commisioner, however, there is a 48 hour waiting period before the deal is final. This will allow time for appeals to be filed to the leagues commisioner. A 51% appeal of leagues GM's will constitute an automatic rejection of the trade. All appeals can be emailed to me or sent to me on AIM. As far as salaries when trading. We will use the same rule as the NBA does. 125%+100k rule.

Free Agency
I will play the part of the players agent. The same way as with the coach. You will have to make 7 free agent signings.
Voting
As stated previously, I will assemble a voters panel when the game is nearing the voting period. You will be judged on the following
A. How good the team you have assembled is.
B. The chemistry of the team you have assembled.
C. Usage of players towards their strengths.
D. Write up.

But you don't have to take an organization. You are free to name your team the Rap's though...

Might I suggest you work in a judging panel to go along with it, or at least criteria?

Also I feel that draft order will be a major benifit to the early seeds and will really hurt the chances or the later teams.

I'd like to participate though.

Yeah I will be assembling a judging panel when it comes closer to time to vote, the reason I'm waiting to assemble it is to make sure those people on the board are still active....
What is your suggestion for evening things up?

The order should go like this:

1-2-3-4-....
12-11-10-9-...

I was thinking about reversing round 5. The whole reason a snake draft is used it to even up things for those at the end of round 1. Its a pretty effective means because you are getting a much higher quality 2nd player than the guy who got the #1 pick. I think switching round 3 shifts the favor over too much. But we will have a vote once registration is complete.

So you're going to let the guy who got the #1 pick also get the 24th pick? and the guy who got the 12th pick get the 36th pick? and you think to make up for it you're going to switch the 60th pick with the 49th pick? (or something like that?).. I would think 1+24 is much closer to 12+13, then what you said (unless I'm not understanding it right)

That's specifically why i want a judging panel to evaluate an entire team.
No offense to the participants in the last game, but most matchups were judged by how the teams looked on paper, rather than whether they work as a unit on both ends.

I feel is we get enough know how posters, we could eliminate the Lebron factor.

Sure bness, but like I said before. You can name your team the lakers if you would like but you don't start this game with an organization like GM-a-Team.
