Who's up for an all-time draft?

Post#1 » by Finger Roll » Sun Jul 19, 2009 7:38 pm

I'd be willing to participate and run this (although I'd probably need a helper). We should have at least 8 participants, preferably more.

We would have a draft, maybe anywhere from 8-15 rounds, drafting any player in NBA history (including active players). The specifics would obviously have to be figured out, but the general idea is that we would all try to build the best team we could, taking talent, fit, etc. into consideration. For each player drafted, you could choose a certain number of years for the judges to judge them on. I suggest somewhere from 3-5 consecutive years, but, again, that's all stuff we would figure out once people signed up.

I'd also need someone to help me oversee things.

So who's interested (participants and judges)? Feel free to leave e-mail and AIM.

You can also leave a team name if you wish. I'm still thinking...

I'd definitely be in as a participant (assuming there's some more interest), I'd suggest a 3 year peak, as 5 years consecutively is just too much.

3 years was my initial thought as well.

As someone who has been in over 10 of these and run 4 of them I will tell you it requies alot of work and that your thread will not get enough exposure to work.

Either way I can tell you basicly with 16 teams this is the 1st and 2nd rd

1. MJ 30. Parish
2. Wilt 29. Drexler
3. KAJ 28. Stockton
4. Magic 27. Walton
5. Shaq 26. Wade
6. Bird 25. McHale
7. Hakeem 24. Barry
8. Duncan 23. GP
9. Russell 22.Isiah
10. West 21. Ewing
11. DrJ 20. DRob
12. Moses 19. LBJ
13. Oscar 18. Gilmore
14. Kobe 17. Barkley
15. K Malone 16. Frazier

Yeah, I know it will require a lot of work, but I'm willing to do it. Interesting list, but I see quite a few picks I disagree with...

So, Warspite, if enough people do sign up, are you interested?

I know that I don't have the time to play but if I had the 1st 10 picks I would take

PG MAGIC/STOCKTON
SG KOBE/WADE
SF MJ/LBJ
PF D12/KAREEM
C WILT/RUSSELL

With the talent to choose from I'd go twin towers all the way!

Is there a site with an archive of past players and their stats year by year?

How is it decided who picks first etc?

I'm sure there's other good sites out there, but the one I like to use is basketballreference.com

I will use a random number generator to determine the draft order. Obviously the first few picks have a significant advantage in this sort of game, so the draft will be a variation of a snake draft. Maybe reverse it in rounds 2 and 3 (and possibly 4); pure snake after that. Any suggestions as to how the draft order should be are welcome.

Also, trading will be allowed.

I'm in.

How much time do you get to make your selection?

I may not be around much tomorrow but I'll be available thereafter.

Probably about 4 hours. Keep in mind, though, that once you miss a pick, you can still make your selection whenever you get on. It's not like you miss a pick; it's just that the next person is on the clock to pick, as well.

Gotcha.

That may be a problem for some people as they have work and don't have computer access, though.

Also, are we trying to build a balanced team that could theorhetically beat the other teams or is it just best players available and going by positions?

In other words, do we have to balance offense and defense, post play, and sharp shooting, rebouding and perimeter play, etc?

I don't think it'll be as big of an issue as you think. I've seen some similar games in the past, and it usually seems to go pretty well.

Yes, balance is important; you're trying to build the best team.

Im presently finishing off the current one on the player comparisons board. Im in the Final 4 and should be finished in a week. I and a few other GMs will be watching to see how you do. I may jump in if a few more active posters do. You need more exposure thats for sure and before you start you need to sit down and get your clearly defined rules in place.

Answers you will need: Min # of games played, draft order, criteria, Int players, ABA.

GMs need to know the value of a Walton, Sabonis and ABA DrJ, Gilmore and Mel Daniels. I also highly suggest you put up criteria for trades. Somebody will make a horrible trade to get there fav player and completely destroy the league if you dont have some veto power. I recall somebody tradeing Adrian Dantley for Kobe Bryant and ruining the whole league. In my leagues I basicly make 1st,2nd and 3rd picks untradeable because of there value. Personaly I dont see the point of trades in a draft this deep. There are more 30ppg SG/SFs than there are teams and there are more 10rpg players than there are roster spots. There will be as much talent in the 11th rd as there is the 4th rd.

I suggest

Random.org
Basketballreferance.com
Myself

I love to talk players and would be willling to help any GM just AIM me (AIM is in my profile) My mock is pretty spot on.
