Off-ball stats I'd like to see:

Post#1 » by CBB_Fan » Thu Jul 19, 2012 7:05 pm

A lot of players in the NBA are ball-dominant; players that need the ball in their hands in order to create or score. However, I think that a majority of a player's contribution can come from what they do without the ball, because no player has the ball in their hands all the time. It is hard or impossible to quantify the affect players can have on a game without the ball because we don't keep track of the little things players do that help a team.

Here's a few stats I've though about that could give a sense of a player's off-ball skills:

Successful Screens (SSs): Screens that create an opportunity for a shot. For instance, PnRs that result in a open look for the screened player or for the screener.
Saves: Kind of obvious, when a player keeps the ball in possession when it is going out of bounds
Stalls: Anytime a player has the ball for a certain number of seconds without making a move

And on the defensive side:

Out of Rotation Baskets: Baskets scored by the other team because a player was not in proper position
Forced TOs: TOs caused by defensive pressure, usually dead-ball TOs like a 5 second call
Charges/Offensive Fouls drawn: If not already counted
Shot Altered: A shot that was not touched, but was affected by the defense (ie, a player shooting around a blocker and missing)

And I'm sure there are more that I haven't thought of.

That's actually a pretty great idea. Especially on the offensive end.

This one might already be tracked...but secondary assists. Players who make passes that immediately lead to passes that lead to open-shots. I would think dominant centers like Shaq could score highly in this category.

Some cool ideas in here! I'm not a big fan of the saves stat because that is rather circumstantial just as the rotation defensive stat would be - though there would be some trends. Stalls on offense and Forced TOs would be very interesting. I can't imagine how many stalls someone like a Beasley or Carmelo would have haha

My one idea would be an "Extra-Pass" stat. Those who passed up an open shot to pass to someone who was equally or more open and converted. Some players will hoist an open shot regardless if the person standing in the corner open is a much better shooter. Would help indicate overall basketball IQ.

problem with this one is that alot depends on the person being screened as well. for example someone would have way more SS's when setting a screen for CP3 as opposed to Jarrett Jack regardless of screen quality.

would be an awesome one.

would be kinda hard to quantify without knowing each coach's defensive schemes and strategy on each play. coach's sometimes tell certain bigs to stay home and not rotate at all for stretches.

is the best one and i believe there's some sites that record it, not sure how accurate they are with it though.
