How do win shares work?

I thought I had a good concept of them but now it kinda confuses me. Do you build more as you play better? For instance Drummond has 2.2 DWS right now. Is that good? Will that number go up or down as he plays better on that side?

DWS are probably my single least favorite common defensive metric. They're mostly based on team defensive ratings, so can greatly overrate poor defenders on good defensive teams or underrate good ones on bad teams. I'd recommend DRPM over anything else readily available as well as Nylon Calc's rim protection if/when it is up.

Just of note, see the 2013 season leaders in DWS, including in the top 20 Boozer, Z Bo, and Rudy Gay...

Having said that, Drummond, your example, is 3rd among Cs in DRPM and 26th in rim protection. Last year he was 5th in rim protection, and I'd expect that as the season goes on he climbs back up toward that this year as well.

NBA is one of the hardest leagues to based just off the numbers. So much goes into the game that even advanced stats miss.
