The 20/5/5 and 50%/40%/90% CLUB

Post#1 » by joshfarc86 » Tue Feb 4, 2020 9:41 am

There are only a handful of players to ever put up seasons shooting 50% from the field, 40% from three, and 90% from the free throw line.

Theres about 20 or so players that have ever posted seasons of 20+points, 5+assists, and 5+rebounds (and while I'm sure it will become much more prevalent with rebounds being easier for guards to average 5 with the pace, it's still elite company).

Now there are TWO players to have ever done both in the same season, putting up 20/5/5 on 50%/40%/90%............

Stephen Curry (2015-2016)
Larry Bird (2 times; 1987-88, 1988-89)

Lower the FT% to 85% and you can add Durant (once), Jeff Hornacek (once, underrated much?) and add Bird another season.....

For some reason I thought there were far more players to put up 20/5/5 seasons, as there's about 20 players, while the 50/40/90 club is far smaller. Combining the 2 is just statistical fun, but it definitely does represent some of the most well-rounded, efficient, effective players and seasons to have ever been played.

We often take it for granted, but the fact that we could watch Curry in 2015-16 put up 30.1 points, 6.7 assists, 5.1 rebounds on 50%FG, 45%FG3 and 91%FT we should be thankful for it, and not forget he's the first to do it sine Larry Bird in 87-88 (yes that's thirty years, and yes Bird was that good).
