I took a bunch of stars and wanted to see their efficiency on offense. This is a list of PPS (points per shot). This was calculated taking points divided by FGA. I also subtracted all points awarded by FTs before using the equation. These numbers are all from the 2009-2010 season.

Kobe Bryant: Points (1970) - FTM (439) = 1531 / FGA (1569) = 0.976 PPS

LeBron James: Points (2258) - FTM (593) = 1665 / FGA (1528) = 1.09 PPS

Dwyane Wade: Points (2045) - FTM (534) = 1511 / FGA (1511) = 1 PPS

Carmelo Anthony: Points (1943) - FTM (508) = 1435 / FGA (1502) = 0.955 PPS

Kevin Durant: Points (2472) - FTM (756) = 1716 / FGA (1668) = 1.029 PPS

DIRK NOWITZKI: Points (2027) - FTM (536) = 1491 / FGA (1496) = 0.997 PPS

Amar'e Stoudemire: Points (1896) - FTM (487) = 1409 / FGA (1264) = 1.115PPS

Pau Gasol: Points (1190) - FTM (286) = 904 / FGA (844) = 1.071 PPS

Tim Duncan: Points (1395) - FTM (271) = 1124 / FGA (1082) = 1.039PPS

Dwight Howard: Points (1503) - FTM (483) = 1020 / FGA (834) = 1.223 PPS

Now, in order of efficiency

1) Dwight Howard
2) Amar'e Stoudemire
3) LeBron James
4) Pau Gasol
5) Tim Duncan
6) Kevin Durant
7) Dwyane Wade
8) DIRK NOWITZKI
9) Kobe Bryant
10) Carmelo Anthony

Portrays a more accurate description of PPS. Majority of the time when a player goes to the FT line he doesn't get a FGA unless it is an and 1.

But, I will also recalculate the scores with the FTMs just to see the changes.

Pau Gasol: Points (1190) / FGA (844) = 1.41 PPS

In theory you're right, but in principle I don't think I agree. Then PPS shouldn't be used as a metric to rate offensive efficiency. How would guys like Maggette look with PPS? Absolutely turrible because he gets to the line a TON.

Getting to the line and converting is a big part of efficiency. You can't just remove it, it makes no sense!

Kobe's getting old.

A shame too. This is the point in his career where he could rack up 2-3 more rings and as many finals MVPs = 2-3 reg season MVP's if he was 5 years younger. Talent dispersal would allow for it, but his body is breaking down.

Okay ahonui, you're making work for yourself because you haven't taken the time to understand the stats that are out there.

This calculation you made describes an existing stat called effective field goal percentage (eFG%) which is readily available on basketball-reference.com.

Now, additionally, this is not the shooting efficiency stat people consider most useful, true shooting percentage (TS%) is. TS uses league averages to estimate how many real shots a player took that were not counted in FGA because of called fouls, and thus gives us the closest thing we have to a true "points per shot" stat.

As far as wanting to not include free throws, not saying there's never a use in doing that, but just keep in mind that when someone is trying to score, making free throws are just as valid as making field goals. And if you want to actually measure shooting ability, including free throws doesn't actually make the number less valid since the ability to shoot free throws is one of the core aspects of being a good shooter.

Just look at their eFG% for efficiency from the field
TS% measures scoring efficiency
