They are complicated. People refer you to read Dean Oliver's Basketball on Paper for a reason, and not simply because it's a great book.

Generally though, understand that they are meant to basically be an efficiency metric in its purest form (Unlike PER which really shouldn't be using "efficiency" to describe itself at all). So you aren't supposed to use this metric as a statement of which player has had the most impact, just who has a great ratio of good things done to bad things done.

Also of note is that the defensive rating is really lacking - which Oliver says in his book as he introduces it. It's the best he can do with the data commonly tracked

Yes I have wondered which specific formulas (there seem to be multiple) are used for the teams on basketball-reference.com. :clap:
