The "singlytics" concept - is it any good?

Surrounded by so many numbers and stats, I often find myself struggling to come up with a conclusion about something until I'm finally lost in the sea of numbers. It's true on my everyday work as it is true to my "sports stats (addictive) consumption". I recently encountered the "singlelytics" concept during my work. The concept simply leads us to focus a single KPI (measure) when trying to set goals and improve our performance. Usually it would be a very simple measure (such as "daily new customers", or "new opportunities"). Once the goal is achieved, you can move on to the next measure and focus it.
Can this approach work for us as well when dealing with sports, or more specifically basketball stats? Just pick a single measure and track it (chart it) over time to gain some interesting insights?

This app here: http://www.numbeez.com is doing something similar to that concept by letting the users create and track single measures over time (you can track many, but each stands on its own), comment, discuss the numbers and build your own "numbers wall" (which updates automatically).
Especially interesting is the "track-it" (http://www.numbeez.com/trackit) features that lets you just pick numbers on the web stats pages you use to visit and set automatic scheduling to bring those numbers to your own personal dashboard. The number from this moment on turns from a "stand alone" stat into a live, evolving infographic.

I personally find the concept very interesting but would love to hear what you guys think of it when dealing with basketball statistics.
