I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, but I figured possibly people into stats might be good with numbers in other areas.

To put it simply, I'm building a home and trying to incorporate a small indoor court. My maximum ceiling height is 16.4ft and I can't go any higher

I've had a look online and found that the average 3 point shot in the NBA reaches a maximum height of 15.77 feet and a player like Curry averages 16.23 feet.

according to Stats LLC, which tracks such geospatial coordinates with high-resolution cameras in every NBA arena

In theory that would answer my question, as long as my arc isn't higher than the average NBA player, I should be fine, although cutting it close.

My only concern is whether by maximum height they are referring to the top of the ball (this makes the most sense) OR the bottom of the ball? The reason I ask, is that many sites online suggested the minimum height you should have for an indoor court is 17ft.

I don't want to put all this time and money into the project and be in a situation where my 3 pointers are hitting the ceiling.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Follow up question: I really want to paint the wall behind the basket Black, but I'm unsure if it's going to make it harder to see the rim when shooting, as I've never shot on a court with Black walls.

Seems like it would effect your shot anyways. It’d be in your head after the first time you hit the ceiling.

I’m hoping it never hits the ceiling, I’m confident within the range of a free throw it won’t be an issue, but without being able to measure the height of my shot on a three, I can’t be sure.

I’m just hoping someone who has experience with this kind of data would know if they’re referring to the top of the ball

It also doesn’t help that the numbers are averages or that I’m significantly shorter than the average NBA player, I don’t know what effect that would have on the height of the arc

Secondly, perhaps you can try it out? Go to an indoor court and tape a mesh, or take a screen door or something and hang it at the height that you're able to build to and try launching some NBA threes!

My first guess is that the data is for the center of the ball, but I can't say for sure.

I'd also add that there's variation. Nobody has exactly the same arc on every shot. Probably at least a foot up or down once you're out to NBA 3-point range. So even if the average shot doesn't hit the ceiling a few taken with a higher then average arc could. Then you're thinking about it and then only shooting extra flat.

The home won’t be with a big name builder, just a friend of the family and they’ll only build the shell for the court. For the court itself I plan to use https://connorsports.com/

But everything’s delayed at the moment so we haven’t even begun building, still waiting council approval as I had to wait on the architect to adjust a few drawings.

Thank you sir, it is...well technically the dream growing up was to have the bed ON the court and then have it go back down into the court when it was time to play. However I'm not putting any AC in the court so that won't happen. I do however have a games room and study running parallel to part of the court which I might one day convert into a bedroom just to fulfill the ultimate dream

I'm definitely taking my time and have re-designed it all several times to make sure I get it just right, but it's time to start building soon because who knows what delays will happen with the world in so much uncertainty.

I don't have the best memory in the world, but once it's all done if I remember I'll come back and share some pics. The plan is to have a nice alcove in the wall to one side of the court as a seating area and I'm planning to have framed prints and jersey to honor all my favourite players.

It'll be 60ft wide so I'll have a few extra feet each side but only 40ft deep so it'll be short of midcourt but more than enough for 1 guy in his 40's haha
