Statistic Harvesting

Hello there, this has been something that I've been interested in for a while now; how do sites like basketball-reference.com and other sites get their statistics input into their website?

They obviously have a program that harvests all of the boxscores from every game, and then feeds them into different formulas that interperate the raw data.

My question is: is there an open source and/or free version of that software available on the internet?

Apparently from a commercial data provider. \

Statistical analysis software beyond Excel is rarely free, and for something that complicated, you need it. Personally, I use stata, which would do a fine job of it. I'm not sure what the folks on those sites use though.
