PG DRtg List...Guess where ours rank?

Post#1 » by sule » Fri Dec 4, 2009 12:17 am

All this talk about Triano either not being a big believer in Defense Rating or at least downplaying it for the media got me thinking about where we rank in terms of our PG play. You know. That position we were supposed to be so strong at. That position that we had a conflict at. The one that would provide so much stability to our team and so much scoring opportunities, we thought we had a potential all-star on our hands.

So, I took a list of what I thought were the starting PG's for each team (except ours...i ranked both our PG's) and ranked them according to their DRtg for this season from Basketball-reference.com

Here's what I got:

Rajon Rondo - 98
Raymon Felton - 100
Jason Kidd - 102
Derek Fisher - 102
Jameer Nelson - 103
Brandon Jennings - 104
Russel Westbrook - 104
Baron Davis - 105
TJ Ford - 106
Mario Chalmers - 106
Mo Williams - 106
Tony Parker - 107
Rafer Alston - 108
Deron Williams - 108
Rodney Stuckey - 109
Andre Miller - 109
Mike Bibby - 109
Chauncey Billups - 109
Derrick Rose - 110
Gilbert Arenas - 110
Royal Ivey - 111
Aaron Brooks - 111
Monta Ellis - 111
Chris Paul - 111
Jonny Flynn - 112
Beno Udrih - 113
Chris Duhon - 113
Steve Nash - 114
Mike Conley - 116
Jose Calderon - 119
Jarrett Jack - 121

Discuss.

Quick look at the top 5

Rajon Rondo - 98 - Kendrick Perkins
Raymon Felton - 100 - Tyson Chandler
Jason Kidd - 102 - Erick Dampier
Derek Fisher - 102 - Andrew Bynum
Jameer Nelson - 103 - Dwight Howard

is a pattern emerging? I think so...

Derek Fisher is top 4 on this list. He's not exactly a defensive stopper. This stat probably takes into account team defense.

Lower means better...

Oh I get it. The reason why Bosh and Bargnani suck at D is because Jose and Jack do.

The lower the number the better.

The formula is: Defensive Rating = (Opponent's Points Allowed/ Opponent's Possessions) x 100. The result is the expected amount of points that an individual player will allow on defense over 100 possessions. This stat can be significantly influenced by the defense of a player's teammates.

LOL at people saying TJ Ford has comparable defence to Calderon.
Also, does this take into account the minutes Jack played at shooting guard?

lol no man, other way around

I'm not trying to defend their horrid defense, but this stat will be inflated when your big men are just awful help defenders

Or maybe having to help all the time leaves the man they're supposed to be covering open all the time, leading to easy buckets. Combination of both bad help defense and inability to prevent dribble penetration == fail + NBA's worst ever defense

Well yeah, it goes both ways. Which is why I said I wasn't defending them. But if they had better defenders on the inside they wouldn't look nearly as bad.
