I don't quite recall a player that looked like a total waste of a draft pick from the first time I've seen him perform in summer league.

Equal parts cringe and truth bomb.

About the only thing he got right during his tenure.

Jan Vesely says high. Sad that both of the wizards first round picks in 2011 were out of the league in 3 years.

Vesely had a stretch where he at least looked like he could be a player in the league.

Kwame underperformed but wasn't useless.

Ared Effries, same. (how long have we been posting that there's an in-joke for someone drafted in 2002?). Kind of a sad story where he gave up a promising front office position (scout to director of player personnel in 3 years) with the Nuggets to go run Rick Fox's esports team, which folded 2 years after he joined because the owners were feuding.

Out of Arvis at 10, Devin H arris at 5, Opec at 18, Nick Young at 16, and McGee at 18, only Opec was really a bust.

Wall, Beal, and Porter worked out, Jan Vesely didn't.

Troy Brown at 15, Rui at 9, Deni at 9, and Kispert at 15 are all viable players in the league to varying degrees.

Johnny Davis is a 10th overall, and he's probably better than Jan and Opec, but only marginally so.

Jan's career high was 16 pts on 8-8 shooting, with 6r, 1a, and 4steals, which is also his best game by B-R's game score (18.7).

OPec's career high was 15 pts on 6-8 shooting and 5 boards, fouling out after 23 mins of play.
OPec's best game was 13 pts and 5 boards on 5-9 shooting (0a, 0s, 0b, 0 TO, 0 PF) - 11.4 GmSC

Davis's career high is 20 pts on 9-17 shooting, with 5 boards 4 assists 2 steals 2 blocks, also his best game score (17.2) - this is what Jalen Williams averages.

And not to beat a dead horse but there were plenty of players from that draft available that the 10 spot that panned out to be really impressive (Jalen Williams, Jalen Duren, Walker Kessler, Keegan Murray).

Interesting analysis. Only slight point was that Murray was taken at #4 but yeah the Davis pick is turning out to be worse than any recent one in history that I can remember.

Although maybe Davis can turn it around but it looks like he's a project which already makes the drafting of Davis a failure given that he was supposed to have lower potential than other players on the board but a higher floor.

Devin Harris worked out great for us since we traded that draft spot for Antawn Jamison, which ignited our high octane no-defense Hibachi offense. And prefigured the small-ball pace and space era.

A lot of hate for Johnny Davis in multiple threads with multiple posters ready to give up on him. I get it. He has been awful for 2 seasons.

However, he is under contract for next year, and he has been very good over his past 11 games. (Then again, maybe he has been so bad for his career, any improvement by him deceives me into thinking he is playing good basketball, when the truth is, he still sucks, but his level of sucking has decreased.)
Viva le tank! At this pace, it will never end.

Speaking of Halloween and nightmares - isn't Davis' 2025-26 club option on Halloween (10/31/24)?

Writing appears to be on the wall that his option will be declined this summer. He's getting very limited minutes. "One last chance for Johnny to show something" doesn't appear to be any sort of priority for this FO.

It would be a real bad move to opt in on his team option. The guy will be lucky to be in the league next year, and if he does, it'll be for a vet minimum contract. Why on Earth would we opt to pay him $6.7M next year when he will surely be available for the $2.4M vet minimum?

And if someone else offers the vet minimum and we really want to keep him, we could simply use Bird Rights and outbid the other vet minimum offers.

There is zero chance that his option gets picked up. He's a pure expiring at this point.

Option not getting picked up per team.

There once was a baller named Davis
And Wizards fans hoped he would save us,
But his jumper was broke
And the fans now say, "Nope!
Poor Johnny will never be famous."

Inevitable.
Must be hard to take for a guy riding high into the draft & then being picked at #10.

Here's hoping he finds a way & a role. Gets to continue his career. Good luck, Johnny Davis!

Yep, interesting. This FO has managed the cap really well to take on bad contracts for assets.

Code: Select all

Jordan Poole         26   $31,848,215
Kyle Kuzma           30   $21,477,272
Corey Kispert        26   $13,975,000
Alex Sarr            20   $11,808,240
Jonas Valančiūnas    33   $10,395,000
Bilal Coulibaly      21   $7,275,600
Saddiq Bey           26   $6,118,644
Carlton Carrington   20   $4,677,600
Kyshawn George       21   $2,966,760
Total                   $110,542,331

I think there is some money that will go against the cap for Holmes as well.

My question is what team has contracts they want to get rid of and also have draft assets?

Or does this FO think they will be a player in the off-season FA market?

Note: This year's minimum team salary is $126.529. Guessing that will go up a bit for '25-26.

Guess what?

In his 3d season, Johnny Davis is playing pretty well! He's not getting a ton of minutes (190 so far), but he's getting a fair amount out of those minutes.

Now... he's still not shooting well. Or much. But, if you look at the rest of his numbers, they are quite good.

Overall, as a composite, Johnny Davis is posting numbers that are well above average for for an NBA 2 guard! Especially steals, blocks & rebounds.

The above was not the case in either his first or second season.

He's averaging 2 points, 1 board, and half an assist. Shooting 28% from 3 and 63% from the line  above average
