I’ve been impressed with how physical he’s been in SL. Mixing it up underneath. Boxing out strong. Setting screens. As he puts on muscle and keeps growing I can see him playing some small ball 5 even.

He seems to have some junk in his trunk.

Key in the lab.

Guard work. Okay I don’t mind if he’s improving that outside game since he was missing that shot for much of the year.

I still want to see him develop an inside game too since he’s been growing stronger. But it’s nice to see him taking it seriously.

I think he will benefit by watching CJs bag of tricks. If the vet is willing to teach. I get the sense CJ will invest effort in a young cat who shows up early and puts in the work. The hope is he is impressed with how eager and serious this young core is.

Players like Brogdon or Smart in theory would make good mentors — but it’s hard to show anything worth copying if you’re not healthy. McCollum still has his game intact. Work ethic is high with him. He’s vocal. Articulate. And he understands the phase of his career he’s in. Yes he’s probably looking at one more contract before he moves to other ventures, but has a legacy of work that he can pass on to the next gen.

I'm real excited about Kyshawn. I like that he is working on his guard skills and feeling out his potential upside as a higher usage player. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out. He'll have to clear the efficiency hurdle - nobody wants a high usage guy with a TS% of .560. If he does, then he could potentially flirt with All-Star consideration - sort of a prime Andrew Wiggins or Khris Middleton type of player. If he can't clear that efficiency hurdle, it'll be easy for him to switch to becoming more of a 3&D specialist. All he needs to do to fill that role is to keep lifting weights and shooting 3's. That'll make him the next Dorian Finney-Smith.

Good to see this. Two potential strengths of Kyshawn’s game are his ball handling and playmaking. I’m sure those skills are also emphasized at a training program that focuses on guard play.

Finney-Smith is a very nice player. But he doesn't do much with the ball in his hands. I have higher expectations for Ky.

Finney Smith is an excellent role player, the type of talent contending teams really need. There is no shame in becoming an elite role player who specializes in two or three things rather than being a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none.

Again, I fully endorse Kyshawn exploring his limits at this stage of his career. We don't know how good he can be. I'm just saying there may come a time when he may need to abandon aspirations to be a primary ball handler and instead focus all of his training at becoming elite at a few specific tasks. Aaron Gordon is more helpful to Denver as an elite role player than he was in Orlando as shot creator.

The same logic applies to Bilal. He is working in the gym, exploring his limits, and aspiring to be a star player. I hope he gets there. But if after several years of training, he still can't create shots with efficiency, it might make more sense for him to refocus the bulk of his training on nailing catch-and-shoot 3's.

I’m not knocking Finney-Smith. I’m a big fan. Like you said, he’s a great role player and the type of player teams want.

But how many times have you seen Finney-Smith make plays for teammates or dribble more than 3-4 times? Or bring the ball upcourt like George has done at times.

Ky has the potential to be a far more versatile offensive player than DFS. That’s all I’m saying. As I’ve said previously, I see Ky as a bigger version of Derrick White.

I never said anything about Ky being a primary ball handler but he’s already showing the ability to be a secondary ball handler.

Dawkins has said that Ky’s playmaking was one of the things they liked about him prior to the draft. I expect the Zards to give him every opportunity to hone that skill.

Is a healthy Otto Porter a decent comp?

It will be interesting to see what areas of his game improve this season. So far he looks on track to be an ultimate glue guy with the possibility of something even better.

Well, that would be great! But it's asking a lot. The Otto Porter of the 2016-17 & 2017-18 seasons was one of the best forwards in the league.
