CCJ I don't see the benefit in trading Gil other than satisfying your personal desire to get rid of someone you no longer like. If he decides to utilize the ETO clause in his contract he becomes an unrestricted FA, so its not like we could force him to go somewhere he doesn't want to go.
If he wants to take somewhat less money the only team with possible cap room that needs a PG is the Clips, and that's only if Brand or Maggette & Livingston leave or get dumped.
Philly & Memphis have their PG position locked up and have more pressing needs in their front court. You also have Seattle who might could offer a few million more than the MLE but how would that be an attractive destination when there's no bet they'd even stay in Seattle?
Otherwise Arenas is basically stuck with taking the MLE from any other team in the league. After two knee surgeries that would be a very stupid move on his part and while we can consider Arenas crazy, nutty and different sort of cat, one thing we can honestly say, the guy is not stupid. Any team that signs him for the MLE wouldn't have bird rights for another 3 years. So unless that team can create cap room in the short term, you think Gil would wait another 3 years to get paid? Or would he take a one year MLE deal and try again next season...which would be akin to a $7-8 million dollar paycut when he could simply decide to not to take ETO and remain with the Wiz one more year? Sorry that just doesn't add up.
Trading Gil is only an option if Gil decides he wants to go to a certain team and the Wizards show a willingess to do a sign & trade with that specific team. Problem with that is its Gilbert who picks the team, not the Wizards (so those dreams of Conley from Memphis fall by the waist side) and the Wizards will get pennies on the dollar for Gil.
Think what Memphis got for Pau Gasol, a big expiring contract, a mid-to-low level prospect and a 1st rounder or two (likely a low-first rounder considering Gil's desire to go to a winner). I'm not sure how this scenario would help the Wizards short term or long term.
Dat, I was responding to nate's suggestion that if Gil holds out to a max contract WITH MAX RAISES WHICH WOULD INCUR THE TAX instead of just a max contract.
Ruz, after reading nate's proposal, asked could Gil be traded.
I said in effect if he hijacks the team's payroll I'd (sign and) trade him before I'd like him leave for nothing. If Gil exercises the ETO and the Wizards give him the max I think he'll resign with the Wizards.
Where I made an assumption is that I believe the Wizards could sign Gilbert and trade him a later date, whether he likes it or not. With any trade the Wizards would obviously get something valuable in return.
Dat, speciifically, yes, give him a boatload of cash if you must, but
later say screw you to him! That's truly how I feel if a guy says publically money doesn't matter, yet clearly he's sticking you up for the most he can get. Character matters and even though he's a great talent, he can be replaced in the right trade.
If the only way to retain Gil is a max contract with max raises and a no-trade clause, I'd let him walk.
I've enjoyed good basketball without Gilbert Arenas. I know he's GREAT. I know he hits great game winning shots. I'm aware of all the statisically great things that happened to players around him when Gil was healthy.
Yet and still, I know the team can find other players to win without him if he doesn't have the best interest of the team at heart.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.
