re-doing the 1999 draft

Post#1 » by asdfgh » Sat Jun 28, 2008 9:30 pm

nbadraft.net has updated their website and one of the things they added is mock drafts from previous years, all the way back to 1999. I thought of using those mock drafts to play a game where I will re-do the drafts, beginning with the 1999 draft. I haven't included Ginobili because at the time picking him at 7 would have never been an option
So please vote and remember that this only a game I'm playing for my own (and hopefully everyone else's) amusement!

So far we have:
1. Chicago Bulls: Elton Brand, Duke
2. Vancouver Grizzlies: Corey Maggette, Duke
3. Charlotte Hornets: Baron Davis, UCLA
4. Los Angeles Clippers: Rip Hamilton, Connecticut
5. Toronto Raptors: Shawn Marion, UNLV
6. Minnesota Timberwolves: Lamar Odom, Rhode Island

Oh, we picked seventh that year? Hm. Lessee. I'm on the fence between Steve Francis and Kirilenko. Both are headcases, one a fantastic scorer but not much else, the other a fantastic defender and decent scorer but kind of a crybaby. I'd say Steve Francis I guess.

I would go with Ron Artest . Of course, the Wizards would hope no one would throw beer at him.

I am torn between Artest and AK47. Artest is a bigger headcase, but the other is more injury prone. I'd probably go with AK47 because I've loved his game for longer.

Your redone draft is confusing. Maggette at #2? No way. Rip over Marion? Not a chance. And why leave out Ginobili? The whole point of the game is "knowing what we know now". So, my redone draft:

1. Ginobili
2. Brand
3. Marion
4. Kirilenko
5. Baron Davis
6. Lamar Odom

By my board, at 7 the Wiz would get to choose between Francis, Rip, Terry, Maggette, Artest and Andre Miller. All these guys have their merits. I'd steer away from Artest and Francis because of personality issues. The right choice would be either Laron Profit or Michael Ruffin (both 2nd round picks that season). But backed into a corner, gun to my head to pick one (and only one), I'd take Andre Miller.

Agree with most of this except I wouldn't put Ginobili above the bigs. I'd go

0. Laron Profit
1. Brand
2. Marion
3. Ginobili
4. Kirilenko
5. Baron Davis
6. Lamar Odom

At number 7, I'd take Rip.

I can see the argument of Brand and Marion over Ginobili. I'd still take Ginobili over those guys, though.

At 7 I'd go with Terry or Miller. Artest is clearly the best talent of all the one's available, but he's a franchise killer.

I'd take AK-47 ten times over.

Definitely AK-47. Miller would be my second choice.

I changed mine to Ginobli 100 times over AK47.
