Wizards Sign Two Johnsons, McCullough

It sounds as if the Wiz are looking for some forward help. Maybe DMac isn't progressing as they hoped?

Or maybe the team is just thinking ahead to the twenty games Caron will miss and don't want McGuire as the only SF on the roster.

Well, I think moving Jamison to small forward and starting Blatche or Song actually worked out well, and would be a better option than having to rely on either 3 of those guys.

Has anyone notified Ji that the Wizards have made not only a move, but multiple moves?

These moves are little more than camp invites. The only guy that intrigues me is Linton Johnson. I thought he'd stick around after that stint with the Hornets a couple years ago but I guess not. Still he's not an improvement over McGuire so I'm guessing he won't stick around here either.

Did we miss the boat on Mike Hall?

I like the Linton Johnson move, and I've always thought that Dermarr Johnson had decent game with unfulfilled potential. Maybe being back home will light a fire under Dermarr, and he can put up some better numbers than before.

I would be surprised to see any of these guys make it to opening night. Dermarr Johnson is the only one but even he's a long shot being a jorneyman and has been less than average since the injury.

DerMarr is, when he's playing the same game as the other nine players on the court, a situationally useful player. He's plenty big for small forward, or plenty tall anyway, and quick enough that if his continued employment is contingent on his defensive exertions that he's not the weak link defensively in your average five out on the court. His outside touch is decent enough and consistent enough that it's probably a plus that he's so reliant on spot up threes for offense, with the only real alternative being to physically walk the ball to the hoop and guide it through so that it doesn't get scared.

He can play shooting guard in a Jared Jefferies sort of way, (i.e. you can write Dermarr Johnson: SG on your roster sheet and he'll go play small forward) but he's no kind of ball handler and so should probably confine himself to a dribble handoff or hoisting one up when its his turn to run the weave. All that still adds up to a below average player, but he does have two or three NBA skills, for what that's worth (the veteran minimum).

Linton Johnson is sort of what McGuire will be in a few years if he makes an effort to sort out his issues with silly mistakes on defense and slams his hands in car doors every few weeks to kick his habit of doing anything offensively.

So I have to assume that Dermarr is the most likely of the three to make the team, but he's not a good candidate for heavy minutes even if he does. He might be a better idea than five hundred minutes of Darius Songaila at small forward over the course of the year, so there's always that.

I think DerMarr could be the only one to have a shot to make the team, he has had some good moments and some bad moments. I saw DerMarr about a month ago at Lavar Arrington's restaurant they were having speed dating there that night, and I guess he was trying to get his Mack on. I didn't stay because I couldn't think of a good excuse to tell my wife of 15 years why I was in that restaurant on the night they were speed dating.

I am kind of bummed no Juan Dixon though.

I like that we invited three SF's to camp. Let all of them compete and learn the system. If somebody really stands out, we can sign him. If not, we'll still have 3 SF types who know the system and we might be able to call them up sometime during the middle of the season after Caron Butler gets hurt.

Totally agree. Just wish we had signed someone who was more of a defensive option like...
