Final Roster

Post#1 » by fishercob » Sat Oct 4, 2008 2:18 pm

So far as I can tell, three guys -- Dee Brown, Dermarr Johnson and Juan Dixon -- are competing for the final two roster spots.

In fact, Dee may have one sewn up and it may be down to Juan and DJ for the final spot.

Who do you think it should go to and why?

Dee is definitely in. Dixon will beat out Dermarr Johnson because Dixon's contract is partially guaranteed (I think). The only way Dermarr makes it is if somebody like Etan or Pecherov gets traded.

Agree 100%. I really don't see any way GMEG makes any trades so all DeMarr Johnson fans should prepare to be disappointed.

The partial guarantee is for low dollars, and I'd imagine it's staged x-dollars no matter what, x-dollars if he makes the team, x-dollars for y-number of games. I can see the team eating it if there's a clear difference.

Dee's in. We need a back-up Point and he's that. Plus he adds the Mike Wilks' position. The reason we picked up Wilks was because AD had been tortured by the Speedy Gonzalez players of the league. It's a spot we need. He seems to have good chemistry with our young players too.

On the DerMarr/Dixon battle, I don't think it's a done deal. The Small Ball chorus forgets that Eddie came to the team with a stated preference for Big guards. Remember he came up on a team with Magic Johnson/James Worthy; and landed here after working with Jason Kidd and all the NJ tall guards. Then he played Jared Jeffries at 2, and did his darnedest to cram square peg Jarvis into that round hole. He sounds suitably impressed with DerMarr at 6'9", says we've got unmatched length with him in there.

The problem is Dixon is a fan favorite, and has saved the team's collective bacon in the past. And what is more: he's learned to pass. Check the highlight clips on the team site and in each one Dixon dumps off the ball to a cutter who makes the score. Plus he's Juan: hard-working coach pleaser. And a known quality for all his streakiness. Plus the loyalty factor. He'd be pretty tough to cut.

But as far as team need is concerned. Dixon as a 1-2 is at less of a need position than a big 2-3, with 6 more fouls to throw at LeBron for instance at the back-up SF slot. And the issue's even more clear cut once Gil returns.

That's why I think Eddie wants to carry the surplus guys into the preseason. If DerMarr conclusively outplays JDix, it makes for an easier cut. If his inconsistency shows up, if he drops off the table, then we're okay with Juan.

Of course there's always the knucklehead factor to consider. Would DerMarr and his checkered past serve as a distraction for a guy like Andray, who's just starting to get it? That could be the question that tips the balance. This team has enough good character that it shouldn't be an issue, but Dray's development is a special consideration.

There is no doubt in my mind that both Juan and Dermarr are better basketball players than Brown... I agree that he is probably a lock, but I'm dumbfounded about that.

I said it in my post about Friday's scrimmage, but I'll say it again... Dee Brown is by far the fastest player in camp, but he has zero basketball iq... that might be ok for a two guard (hear that N1?), but it is awful for a 1. Brown has no idea about how to run an offense, he does hustle on defense but misreads it as much as he reads it right and often ends up gambling where he shouldn't.
