OT: Annual Basketball Videogame Thread

Post#1 » by newslowsad » Thu Oct 9, 2008 3:01 pm

I'm guessing everyone bought NBA 2K9, but did anyone buy NBA Live '09? I decided to go with Live first and will buy 2K9 used down the road. I've been a huge 2K supporter since the Dreamcast, but Live's rosters tend to be closer to accuracy and their servers don't go down as much as 2K's for online play. I was surprised to see that Live already has Dee Brown and Juan Dixon on the Wiz roster. Everyone is there except for DMAC, but I'm guessing he will be added once the season starts. The game as a whole feels much more realistic and less arcade-y than last year's version, which I still enjoyed despite its issues.

EA made the following Wiz roster moves on the online version of Live 09 today:

In: Dee Brown (Juan Dixon was already playable online)
Out: Brendan Haywood

For some reason, you can still play with Gilbert online, but that will change soon I assume.

Still can't play with JaVale or DMAC online. JaVale is in the actual game though, but DMAC isn't. Hope this all gets fixed by next week.

I bought 2k9 a few weeks ago. The gameplay and graphics are great but there are a ton of online issues. It's very hard to connect to the server for a game and there is a ton of lag for the team online games. They are supposed to be releasing a patch in the next few days that resolve a lot of these issues but I have my doubts that they will address all of the problems.

Yeah, that is pretty much why I decided against 2K this year. I usually play online and was really not pleased with 2K online last year. Their servers are down way too much.

I never play online, so not only am I picking up 2K, but I'm picking up 2K for the PC rather than a console. It's only twenty bucks versus sixty for the console versions, and I'm really interested in what the modding community can come up with for the game.

EDIT: Played one game last night. As for the game itself, I'm no expert on the NBA video games, so I offer no deep opinions. All I can say is I had fun with it. As for playing the game on the PC, it was actually pretty great for the most part. Looked awesome, very quick loads times, etc. Basically, didn't feel like I was playing a crappy port. I used the 360 controller, so there were no problems with actually playing. The only minor issue with that is that icon passing uses utterly nondescript gray "B1" and "B2" icons rather than color-coded "X" and "Y" icons. Not a big deal, I got used to it by the end of the game, and I'd be shocked if there isn't a mod out soon enough to let you change them. All in all, I think for people with decent PCs, who aren't into online play, it's a great pick up.

Also, for the fun of it, notes from my game:

+ McGee had 4 blocks in 8 minutes
+ Jamison was the player of the game with 14 points (7-12 FG), 9 rebounds, 10 (!) assists
+ Five players (Arenas, Blatche, Young, Stevenson, Haywood) scored exactly 11 points
+ I was down 26-13 to the Grizzlies after one (learning curve, okay?), but came back to win 87-76
+ After the game, I was offered Jason Kapono and a first rounder for Haywood; uh, no thanks
