He should be happy, he picked up a nice passer who likes to dump off to the Bigs. In a contract year for Brendan, in a league that likes to pay big money for offensive stats.

I am not sure Haywood will ever be a 30+ minute a night player. He could and should inch into the 28/29 minute a game range. Whether it is conditioning or foul trouble he just seems to not be a player who can play big minutes. A lot of the true centers are this way. Also you when you figure McGee needs some playing time and Blatche might play some center in a small line-up, you really don't need more than 30 minutes a night from Haywood.

All I can say is bulls1t! The only things keeping him from being a 30+ minute per game player in DC were EJ and his wrist. He has some issues with fouls, but he's never had a coach give him the opportunity to be a 30 minute player his entire career. Thankfully, one of the few positives of this past season was that fans were able to see in his absence just how valuable the guy really is.

I don't see why he can't. Last year he played 28 MPG, and his few games this year were at 29 MPG. An increase of 3-4 per night doesn't seem that out there to me. We could play him the first and last 8 minutes of each half, which gives him 32 on the night with plenty of rest between each stint.

Haywood should play about 34 minutes on a normal night. Once every 5 or 6 games or so, foul trouble will shorten his minutes. I see no reason why he can't average 32 minutes per game on the season.

But we want to keep his value down! Can't be giving Haywood the opportunity to get double-doubles! :D

+1

Brendan's a 30+ minute a night center, finally!

Brendan sees Etan traded along with Darius, who played a lot of C. As the remaining veteran C he should be ecstatic seeing the franchise is committed to him and him alone at C (because McGee's gonna take a while). This deal, with Miller and Foye potentially off the books means Brendan's getting paid, most likely now by the Wizards.

What was funny was, he could barely contain his glee about it and then he remembered to send a shout out to Song about he would really be missed by everyone on the team because of his toughness and effort but not a word about missing Etan. Something tells me he was as happy about the poet leaving town as he was about any of the players we picked up.

And did you notice who told him about the trade? Sean May. Who just became an unrestricted FA. And who plays a position we need to fill (PF). Who should come cheap and be willing to accept a support role. Especially on a team with fellow Tar Heel buddies like Haywood & Jamison.

I know - small potatoes. But I'd really like to see at least one widebody on the team who can take up space, hold his ground, and score in the paint. May's not a long-term answer, but he'd be great for a year or two audition.

I was a May fan, but I think we should be looking at more defensive-minded players at this point - who typically play more than 20 games a season.

Don't no if its been posted already, but Brendan recently had this to say about Etan:

"He distanced himself from the team. So you look out there, we're gonna miss Songaila because he's played and played well the last couple years, and we're gonna miss him because he went out with guys to eat, he went out to the comedy shows and to the mall, he hung out, he was an integral part of our team. While Etan didn't play, and he didn't have that many close friends, so, we're not gonna miss him."

From the 2007 freedarko every player preview:

Haywood, Brendan: Will visit Etan Thomas—his longtime nemesis—in the hospital following Thomas’ heart procedure. B-Hay will lean in and tell his teammate, "Grey-hair, before you die, know that I will put under the knife your children, and wipe your seed from this earth forever…No homo."

haha, you admitted you watch mystics games!

Seriously I bet Haywood would be a great 3rd leg and just blow Chris Miller and that other guy out of the water. They absolutely provide zero insight. It got to the point when the camera was one Chris Miller I'd just mute the tv because his "captain obvious" routine just irked me.

More good news on the Haywood free agency front:

The Grizzlies just traded for Zach Randolph. That'll prevent them from having cap room in 2010. Also, San Antonio won't be a player in 2010 with Jefferson on the books. Dallas may sign Kidd to a substantial deal which will eliminate any 2010 flexibily they might have had. And as mentioned before, Boozer isn't opting out and neither is Okur. It looks like the free agency supply is increasing and the number of teams with cap room is decreasing.

And we still have a fair number of big names out there who are likely to sign somewhere and clog somebody's payroll. There's David Lee, Paul Millsap, Hedo Turkaglu, Lamar Odom, Trevor Ariza and Ron Artest, to name a few.

Also, two of the biggest players in 2010 free agency will be New York and New Jersey. Jersey already has a center in Lopez. They're not gonna go after Haywood. New York runs D'Antoni's system and presumably won't be looking for a guy like Haywood who can't stretch the floor or run the pick and roll.

As Doc mentioned in another thread, I think the big concern is Miami. They're gonna have Wade, Beasley, Chalmers, Cook, James Jones and about $26M in cap space. They should be able to get a max free agent and then have a good chunk of change leftover for a guy like Haywood.

I would welcome Sean May in Washington. It's about one the only places besides, Atlanta that would make sense for him to go.
