Williams can and will play in this league for a long time and I have no problem taking him with our pick. Now we can just hope that Barnes shows up big the rest of the tourney(hopefully with a little more slashing ability/dribble drive) and Kanter checks out physically/looks impressive in workouts.

I think 95% of this board would then agree we cant go wrong.

TBH, i think EG taking someone like Sullinger #1 would make me throw up in my mouth a little.

spaceman_E wrote:*coughs* Has this board forgot Antawn Jamison that quickly? The "worst defender in the league" that we were screaming to get rid of and would never win the big one with him at the 4. I'm not saying their games are identical but in a general sense, how is Williams much different? More athletic, better ball handler, ok. Very good, efficient, perimeter oriented big. Undersized, not a great rebounder and an undistinguished defender. Williams looks like a successful NBA player, but how many championships will he win as a no.1 option?

We need to take the best 2-way player and I think that is still Barnes, or possibly Kanter.

Not saying that a team with Jamison as its second best player would win a chip but lets be real here, that wizards team was never going to get to the ECF with the pieces that it had. Gilbert isn't a championship winning piece and Caron Butler has no idea how to play off the ball. 7 Footer Haywood couldn't even grab 10 boards a game.

Going forward the plan would be to acquire a center that can make up for what Williams lacks on the boards and as a post defender.

But we're not anywhere near that championship point yet. We just want to make that buzz right now, make the playoffs and get to a point where free agents would love to come here and fill any holes we're lacking. Just like how the Thunder lacked threats in the post but still gave the Lakers all they could handle and then acquired a big via trade a year later.

Williams is a horrible post defender and always will be. If he adds any more weight he is going to lose the quickness that gives him advantages against the p/f that are guarding him on the perimeter. williams gets man handled by college p/f's, just imagine what will happen to him defensively against legit nba p/f in the post.
Williams will never be better than Blatche in the post. the best bet for williams is somehow magically get his feet much much quicker on defense so that he can guard s/f and contest perimeter shots--he is going to get abused in the post by legit nba p/f and he will get torched on the perimeter because he won't be quick enough to recover after a small forward pump fakes from three point land and then drives.
if he gains any more weight, he will slow down significantly and his entire game is based beating slower defenders to hot spots in the lane.
He would be a devastating paul pierce in his prime if he is feet magically get quicker. If not, he is Michael Beasely without the drug problem. NOt bad...but beasely isn't leading the timberwolves to the playoffs with his defense.
Build your team w/5 shooters using P. Pierce Form deeply bent hips and lower back arch at same time b4 rising into shot. Elbow never pointing to the ground! Good teams have an engine player that shoot volume (2000 full season) at 50 percent.Large Hands

Oh c'mon. What's the worst thing that could happen if this thread goes to 100 pages?

I can't BELIEVE you don't like Williams. He's probably the most bowlegged top of the draft talent in 10 years!
Making extreme statements like "only" sounds like there are "no" Jokics in this draft? Jokic is an engine that was drafted in the 2nd round. Always a chance to see diamond dropped by sloppy burgular after a theft.

Indy having an epic fail game against the Kings right now. It is in the 3rd quarter and they are shooting 24.5% for the game.

Williams handles & quickness is certainly comparable to barnes. His shooting is comparable. But he has superior size, post up ability, rebounding & toughness. He is absolutely a sf at the next level. He's certainly as much sf as T.Jones.

His inside-outside game is perfect for this team. Very good in picknroll. His attitude & mentality & skillset is a perfect compliment for wall. He can picknpop, oop, spot up. He'll hit the boards & he'll play hard. In turn it's a good situation for him, a young team w/ wall, & a solid vet in Lewis to help him work his way into the league.

I'd love to follow Williams with Markieff Morris to challenge Blatche for the pf spot.

2nd rounder maybe add some speed & D to the backcourt w/ Justin Holiday.

C - McGee, Seraphin, Yi, N'Diaye

PF- Morris, Blatche, Booker

SF- Williams, Lewis, Evans/Martin

SG- Young, Crawford, Holiday

PG- Wall, Shakur

That's 15 just on 3 picks, no trades or FA.

Note 2nd rounder N.Smith would be choice but doubt he's still there.
