Solid move by the Wizards IMO. Just like Rashard Lewis, Roger Mason is a good guy to have around young players.

Mason can be a backup at either G position. Eddie Jordan used Roger Mason behind Antonio Daniels at PG the season the Wizards made the playoffs (almost all the season) without Gilbert.

Other reasons to add him: Mason is a very smart guy who is respected around the league. He had a tw He is more there as a mentor than anything else. He knows his role and will accept it, unlike some other veteran backup Gs the Wizards might have added. I believe he will be more a voice of reason and practice player. He is from the area. Knows the Wizards organization from previous experience.

Mason cannot play the point. When he and Stephenson played together on the Wiz, it was DS that played the point. That says all you need to know about Mason's PG skills. He's strictly an end of the bench shooting guard. That's why he was available for a 1 year vet minimum contract.

His (or any similar player's) value is adding another outside shooter (after Lewis and, hopefully, Young, and maybe Mack) to a poor shooting team. Not a great defender, but at least he plays hard.

Cory Alexander could do a better job playing the point for the Wiz than Roger Mason, Jr. Mason couldn't even play the point at UVA - and they tried him there. It'd take more than foul trouble or injuries for him to play the point. There'd have to be multiple deaths.

House is as bad as it gets at the point.

Agreed. And we need smart players. Roger checks both of those boxes in a big way. Considering the number of back-to-back-to-back games, its a fantasy to think we won't ever use this guy. The end of the bench WILL get used this season.

The truth is that Roger Mason's has stunk as a SG for the last few years, I just can't get all warm and fuzzy over his home-coming like many here. His great character aside, he may actually end-up in the rotation because this current coach favors vets. When we will have to call on him, he's not that good of a basketball player. I would have preferred adding another "character guy" at the end of FA, Mason would have been there.

But we don't need BAD shooters at the end of the bench when you have to call upon one.

But he could very well find his range by coming back to the Phone Booth, where he had his best season. Also, doesn't the design of the arena in San Antonio reportedly cause depth perception issues? I seem to recall seeing that somewhere. Just saying, if he finds his comfort zone again he could be useful.

And if not, most 13-15th men aren't good shooters anyway (otherwise they'd be higher in the rotation). So what's the difference? As long as he's a good citizen and pushes the kiddies in practice, it's still a solid move.
